hitting Top Speed Limiter
08/22/12 11:15 AM

What will happen if I hit that limiter?

My bike is geared 17/45. From what I can tell about going 90-100 mph, this thing will still do 175ish with that setup.

If I hit the limiter, what will it feel like and how will the bike run? If it goes into limp mode, how do I reset it so it runs properly?

Come to think of it, if the bike won't do 186, it won'y ever hit the speed limiter. There is still a rev limiter to be concerned about.

Will the bike hit the rev limiter in 5th or 6th gear if I top out at 175 mph with my current gearing?.

When you hit the top speed limiter it just maintains that speed and won't build anymore. Thats it not lurching or shut down.

If you hit the rev limiter in neutral, the motor will go, ZINGINGINGINGINGINGINGINGINGINGING as it bounces off the limiter.

Depends on what is getting cut, fuel or spark right?

He asked about the top speed limit, not the rev limiter.

I suspect, but have no facts, top speed limiter will simply not allow the primary butterflies to open any more, will freeze the A/F being fed to the throttlebodies, and so forth. It should just feel like it reached a speed and is staying there.

The rev limiter is not so smooth, I think it cuts spark.

It just stops accelerating.

^ This. I know from personal experience. By that time the bike isn't accelerating very fast so it's not an abrupt change at all.

^ Second that. You cant even feel it with stock bike/gearing.

However, it depends how hard you are accelerating when it (limiter) hits. It can be very abrupt too.
I think speed limiter acts somehow like rev limiter?

Few weeks ago I somehow mixed up my Speedohealer so that instead of 000 it was at +100% setting.

Here´s link to video when my speed limiter hits at 30KPH: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5o7Z3-Pthc

How it works, my best guess is that it cuts off ignition more likely than fuel. I have datalogger which logs AFR too, but too bad it was not logging at time.

Thank so much all, especially samin.....that vid is a perfect example of what happens, apparently.

Usually a Speedohealer is set at -50% so that the speedo reads half the true speed and there is no possible way the TSL can kick in. If the bike does 200 mph, the speedo will only read 100 mph and that is nowhere near the speedo reading that the TSL come son. Samin had the SpeedoHealer set at +100%. The speedo would have been reading twice the actual speed and the TSL would come on way early. The TSL is not avoided but rather caused to engage early. Strange that samin's TSL is coming on at 30 kph. That is only 18.6 mph. If that Speedohealer was set to +100% and the speedo was showing half of the actual speed, I would think the bike should do 93 mph before the TSL comes on. That would be half of the 186 mph the TSL is designed to keep the bike from exceeding.

In any case, samins vid shows that the TSL is works similar to the rev limiter though the TSL sounds a lot less violent.

In my own case, my bike will not do 186 with a 45 tooth rear sprocket. No need to worry about hitting the limiter with that setup. I just wonder if the motor would spin up to 11000 rpm triggering the rev limiter if I top it out in 6th gear? ....or does the 14 not hit peak rpm in 5th and 6th gears?

I'm assuming that the TSL is an "indicated" 186 as per the speedo? Has anyone verified actual speed with GPS? Mine hit a wall at 174 with stock gearing...although I did have the Givi "airbrakes" on it also. :)

During at trip to the MotoGP in Assen this summer me and my buddies had planned a top speed run on Nurburgring, but the weather was too bad so we canceled :(

I did reach 295 GPS Kmh on the autobahn on the trip home, with stock gearing and SH set at about 5%, without hitting the top speed limiter. Had to slow down due to traffic and also started to worry about the Giwis. A buddy with a GSXR had 299 on his meter (without speedohealer), i outran him easily. I had hoped to break the 300 Kmh barrier this summer, but not this time.. maybe next year.

Rook, I think my SH was actually +999, not +100 as I said before. That makes more sense too.

My stock 2008 ZX14 hits rev limiter at 5th gear at 296KPH@11.000RPM with 190/55 rear tyre and stock gearing.

While bikes RMP gauge shows 11.600RPM true (logged)reading was 11.000RPM

Thanks for another great video, samin and that 296 kph is just under 184 mph so looks like you are hitting the rev limiter just a couple MPH less that the 186 mph speed limiter.

Thanks Rook. without SH my best standing mile was 182. With SH 190mph.
I think bike is somewhat more capable (1 or 2 mph) but driver ain´t yet :)

Maybe I should get some lowering kit for next summer.
