Noise at cold start
03/26/12 9:45 PM

Bought an 07 14 with 2300 miles. Bike looks great. Still has original tire on it. When I start it on cold starts, it makes a strange noise like the starter is sticking or maybe just keeps spinning for maybe 1-2 seconds. I just changed the oil and when I started it, it made the same noise for a little longer than normal but it always stops after a few seconds and never right after the engine has been running. I don't know if it's a typical noise or something I should worry about. After changing the oil and starting it on initial start up, with it making the noise a little longer, wondering if it's an oil pressure situation.
Have any other owners experienced similar noises?

I think most will tell you the motor is a bit noisy when cold. There can be a period of rattling and ticking. Never heard anyone say the starter was sticking. If there is a litle pop out solenoid like on a car starter motor, I bet that is it. They just get sticky and don't pop back in.

When it does the same noise; when it lasted a little longer when I changed my oil = Cam chain rattle. The spring in the tensioner needs a little tightening. I blew mine out on a dyno. Never heard the noise until it was pulled off the rack, then started in the shop. I let it go for a long time. I know the tensioner is oil assist. As the engine starts, the oil pressure will take awhile to get to the top end, but who cares?

I beat the puppy till it went on the paper. The cam shim sizes that needed replacement that is. Took the tensioner apart, studied the design, pulled me ass cheeks apart and out came an idea. I simply narrowed the hoop of the spring, reinstalled the tensioner. The tensioner needs to be removed for valve shim service. I have yet to hear a peep since.

That is why I am guessing the tensioner is the noise. Rook, gotta catch the OP's abstract. He said, 'kinda sounds like.' Then you move to his next part of his walk. Then, you apply his oil change to a starter motor noise that extended that noise? I don't think an oil change will effect a starter motor or solenoid to cause the noise to last longer.

I'll make a gentleman's bet it is more the cam chain, when the OP adds, "..always stops after a few seconds..."

thanks for the replies.
I was wondering if there is some sort of check valve to help with oil presusure the might have bleed back?? I like the idea of the cam chain tenioner getting oiled. that sounds more like it instead of a starter. It is actually a vibrating noise that seems to go away about the same time oil pressure would build up.

After I changed my oil to a synthetic Brock Davidson sells my cam noise quit.I have 5700 miles and the oil makes the transmission shift so smooth. But that would be my guess, cam chain.

I think the anti drain back valve works better in some oil filters also. If its making alot of noise dump your current filter. I found its not the brand its the individual filters some work better than others.

To much to list!
