Chain Size?
12/02/09 8:09 PM

Hey guys

I am thinking about changing my chain to chrome or blue in color and was wondering what after market chain is the best and how many links I will need for a stock bike?

Thanks
Snuffy

DAIDO brand is stock.
DID50ZVM4 is to cross reference this to the colored chain.
116 links is the stock length.

I would add 2 links to the new chain and go 17/44 and later 17/45!

Hey Mass-what kind of pickup are you getting with a 17 front and 44/45 rear? How about fuel mileage and shifting?Smoothness while riding? Can you compare it to 16/42/43?(top end with all these gearings are right around 180 give or take some).

Some great advice given here. Blue, try the 17/45 you won't look back.

Thanks Romans-hope you're doing fine there.Good to see ya on the forum here.So..........I've got the 16/42 right now.Can you give me a comparo to the 17/45? My bike hits 182 right now-and has massive acceleration-she'll wheelie very quick-but not uncontrollably.Lots of midrange punch as well-quite happy with it.But if yours is even better-tell me about it some, okay? Thanks!

I'm at 16/43 and really want to try the 17/45, have a feeling that the bike will feel smoother and not as twitchy in midrange.
Riding tight twisties on a liter bike demands 2nd gear but on the 14 the monstrous midrange torque sometimes forces me to use 3rd gear in the 5-8K rpm which is not optimal for my style of riding and liking.

I have an extra low mileage stock chain and thought about adding links, then decided to get a new chain and never got around doing it.

There's no exact science for the manufacturers in regards of gearing.
My 750 is geared 17/45 from the factory but the gsxr600 is at 16/43.
The r6 I think is at 16/48 stock, the gen2 Busa is at 18/43...
go figure.

I think we all get into the -1 front or -1/+2 change just because it's a simple swap and we get content with the new gearing because of the harder kick but that can't be optimal for every bike and style of riding.
I'm in the same boat and probably guilty of ignorant content as much as most of us here.

The ONLY reason I went back to 16/42 is because with the 16/43 she ran out of gears too quick.Other than that-16/43 gearing actually made the shifting and performance quite a bit more "sportbikey".When I'm riding the canyons,I'm in 5th OR 6th most of the time-and that takes me "over" the speed limit. But I can power out longer with the 16/42.At 16/43,I was hittin high R's too quickly.

Blue, I'm probably not the right person to answer this question, but, I will do my best. It would seem every rider wants something different out of gearing. In the end, it will always come down to personal preference. Some guys want top end, some are after gas mileage. Like Mass states above, it's about how the bike responds on the track. For me and my style of riding it's all about how the bike feels. If the bike struggles to get rolling, the gear ratio # is to low; if the bike spends to much time up on motor, reving needlessly, gear ratio # to high. Both ways indicate to many shifts. Once again this is based on my style of riding. After all this being said, what I can tell you about 17/45 is that it is SMOOTH. With this taller sprocket out back the chain is lifted off the ware bar, thus less noise. On off throttle noise from the chain is also reduced and I for one Love being able to listen to the motor with out the distraction of the increased noise of the 16T sprocket. Blue, the gear ratio# of the 16F/42R is 2.63 and the ratio# of 17F/45R is 2.65. So I'm not sure how much of a change you will notice in straight line performance but there does seem to be a big difference in how the bike behaves. I was very lucky to have two other ZX-14s to compare my findings. I ran a couple of rolling resistance tests early on but after my switch to ceramic bearings the tests became useless. I can tell you this 4 sure, if you run your bike up in second gear, then go into neutral, then shut the motor off and coast, you will see the difference between 17 tooth and 16 it's quite noticeable. I hope this helps in some way. I know the majority are running 16T out front but it's not for me. Cheers.

Snuffy I'm sorry I did not mean to high jack your thread but it would appear that it has happened(my bad). I hope the info helps you to decide on a longer chain. Lol. I posted a copy over in gearing. I will delete my remarks if you want them removed.

You can over gear these big motors and ruin them for highway cruising. I haven't played with the 14 much, and since its now turbo'ed the gearing will prolly remain around stock (for now anyways lol) but I have went down one in front and 2 up in back on my busa....and it really woke the old beast up nicely. Anymore would be too much for longer distance highway riding......but its just about perfect now

Snuffy, I recently got a new chain. It was an EK Ultimate Sportbike Chain 530ZVX2. It's a high quality chain but I ordered it in Gold and the color is very pale. I had it installed at a local shop and after they greased it up it didn't seem to be colored at all. I had to clean the outside to get some color back. So check the color before you install it!

008 ZX14R Ninja ... Midnight saphire blue with custom lightning bolt paint job, Kenny Rodgers KRTuned mufflers, Corbin custom seat, Marchesini wheels, Dunlop Qualifiers, Dyno Jet PCIII, custom FAICS map, Dyno Jet Ignition Module, K&N Air Filter, Supersprox 44 tooth sprocket, Zephyr 16 front sprocket, EK chain, TRE008, MRA windscreen, Race Railz frame sliders, Sato Racing axle sliders, ST Machine brake & clutch levers, Engine Ice coolant, Muzzy aluminum fan, ceramic coated headers and midpipes (cat removed), Vortex Rear Sets , Pro Comp Stearing Damper, Pro Grip Gel handgrips, Gen Mar clip on risers, Dowco tank bag, and a Rumble fender eliminator.
Removed GPS.

2005 Harley Davidson Dyna Low Rider, 1442 CI fuel injected, 65 HP, lots of chrome with 24K gold overlay detailing. Sure is pretty!

Blue you have to be at the center of the third bar just to get a 43R to fit, so you will definitely need links. Install a new chain and set the adjusters 2 bars from all the way back. My new chain sucked up one bar of adjustment pretty quick. Your going to love this combo. Please do a few on off throttle runs in and out of a turn and post your findings. I found there was a big difference on how the bikes behaves. I also have a 44 tooth Vortex sprocket with about 500 miles on it if you need one, but if you are running 16/42 right now it only makes sense that you go to a 17F/45R. This way, if you do change your mind and want go to a 44R your chain will still work. Where as if you go the other way your rear tire will be pulled closer to the motor ......ask me how I know...lol. I have being playing the gear game on my Sweety 4 awhile looking for her sweet spot....I think I found it. 4 me anyway. Cheers.

That Romans! Will go with the 45 rear come Spring.17 front ya.I know when I went to 16/43-it really did change the riding characteristics of the bike.Tad vibey-not much-but the shifting quality and "sportbikey" feel definitely came around.Felt like a much lighter bike IMO.Just too many R's hitting 6th and trying to cruise at 80 ish,90 ish. Thanks for your input there-will do a comparo come Spring. Can hardly wait!!!!Ride safe Bro-my riding's DONE now...-degrees outside-and 10's or lower during the day .I'm not gonna risk COLD asphalt with my baby now-though there's really NO ice on the roads(yet). Thanks for the offer on the 44...guess I'll go straight to the 45.
