New 2013 ZX14R how screwed am I?
04/27/14 12:26 AM

Hello all! I don't know if this is the proper place to place this post. I apologize in advance... And if it isn't could someone direct where it should go? Thanks!! I may be the owner of a 2013 Kawasaki ZX14r "California" version. I'm on the east coast. And have fallen victim to this common stunt. The salesman didn't know it was a Cali version but the manager did and claims he filled my request by ordering me a brand new 2013 zx14r in the color I specified. He felt it should be no concern to me if the bike was a Cali model. He quoted kawasaki is claiming these bikes to be considered 50state compliant bikes. I don't know if this is coming from kawasaki however.....This playing with words grants him the luxury of throwing any Cali bike at any customer without informing the customer it's a Cali model. At the end the day the customer may end owning the bike. Now I'm not saying Cali bikes are totally bad but extra emission equipment has to produce some differences in horse power and mpg big or small.

So....if I end up with this bike, I would like to ask;
1. What are the general differences between the 49 state model vs. the Cali model? Glitches etc.?
2. What's the stock differences in horse power between the 49 state vs. Cali?
3. What's the stock MPG differences between the 49 state vs. Cali?
4. What's the HP differences add Two Brothers slipons with PC 49 state vs. Cali?
5. What's the MPG differences add Two Brothers slipons with PC 49 state vs. Cali?

The Cali version is a 50 state compliant bike. 50 state sold in all states, 49 state not sold in Cali. All cars and bikes that I know of are sold that way. I can't comment on the performance difference.

Thanks for the response! I can't vouch for every shop, every bike, every bike owner I know..... at least where I'm from "all" shops seem to make it a point to sell "49 state bikes". I'm not denying it may be common for shops not in my area to sell both versions, I just never heard of it and several local dealers all concur.
The dealer I am working with stated according to Kawasaki there's absolutely no difference in performance or MPG between the 49 stater and Cali model. I called several Cali Kawasaki dealers and spoke to their service managers who all claimed the 49 stater will slightly out perform the Cali model. I can't really see my dealer or Kawasaki admitting any performance differences, so hopefully I can get a few opinions here on the performs and mpg. I will continue to research in other areas. Thanks!

I've got a gen 1 cali model and the only thing I see different is a couple of hoses and a canister under the seat. I can't imagine theres a noticeable difference in performance or mileage, if there were there would be a ton of threads on how to remove all of it. Besides you might want to move to California someday. Lol.

Which dealer? Its been sitting on the showroom for over a year, of course they are going to do everything to move it... Last year I went to the dealer looking for a white 13, they didn't want to move off the sticker price, so i bought a left over 12. I was at the dealer last week, and the bike is still there for less than I initially offered.

BUY the one YOU want. There are plenty still out there.

I think you are over working this. If it's the color and price you want, go for it. I don't remember what's added to the Cali model, but you won't be able to tell by the seat of your pants. I vaguely remember it to be a carbon canister to reduce fugitive emissions, not related to how the engine works.

Edit: I found this in the owner's manual. The format did not transfer here, it was a table in the maintenance schedule. Cali model has a "evaporative emission control system" --> a carbon canister that prevents unburned hydrocarbons from going to the atmosphere.

It will add weight. maybe apound extra. All it does is trap the gasoline fumes and hold them so they can comndense into liquid once again. I don't think it has anything to do with hp and if this is like the Ge1 CA models, you can remove the evaportaive emissions system it you don't want the weight.

Hub will know about this.

1. What are the general differences between the 49 state model vs. the Cali model? Glitches etc.? - None
2. What's the stock differences in horse power between the 49 state vs. Cali? - Zero
3. What's the stock MPG differences between the 49 state vs. Cali? - ? but maybe not too far off between the two.
4. What's the HP differences add Two Brothers slipons with PC 49 state vs. Cali? Same
5. What's the MPG differences add Two Brothers slipons with PC 49 state vs. Cali? ? only your exhaust system knows for sure.

6. Can I swap a 48 with a cali ECU - Yes, same-same ECU.
7. Why the mpg difference? - One has a PAIR system that can burn fuel and add/subtract mpg. Only a marble knows for sure.
8. What is a cali bike then? - It has this trick no one is thinking about. Evap of fuel out the tank. So if it is closed or sealed off, that evap sill leaves the tank but not so fast as a 48 state without. That's octane loss, that's more knock, less pep in its walk.
9. So should I be concerned? - Yes and no. If you are a hippy tree hugger and have no clue earth cleans itself up every second of the day, we'd live in a toilet bowl, then yes. OR, we look at the evap as a performance helper with less loss of fuel evap, who has the better gas mileage? A leaking tank with less fuel or a closed loop tank? - Why a sealed off tank of course.
10. If I ate 3 squares a day, would that weigh more than my solid and liquid intake compared to an evap system, or say I'm a light eater and I take up 3 days of liquid/solids that adds up to an evap system, is that how much weight I'm losing? - Yes, pretty close.
11. So if I stop eating, I'll weigh less on the bike, right? Yes, basically.
12. Should I get back to riding or look for a 48 state bike? You've gotta be kidding me, right? A Can I Steer is going to hold you back from riding the same exact bike?

Today's word is 'screed.' If I don't learn one from hag, I learn some on my own. Kinda fits when I start in on a post.

Hub; Are you sure you can swap ECU? I have no idea about 14R, but I have an '06-07 cali ecu, and when I put it in my 49 state '06, it doesn't run the same. It's minor, but after about 30 min. of hard riding, the bike starts to stumble on the bottom end, and seems to burble a little more when I let off the gas.

I have the Cali model, and I thought about removing that emissions system, but eventually decided against it. It doesn't affect performance, and the weight of the system can't be but a pound or two, so it seems like a lot of work for no real gain.

The only downside I have to it is that it takes up a fair amount of the very limited space we have under the seat. When I installed my PCV, autotune, etc, the canister under the seat was exactly where I wanted that stuff to go. But even then, there's still room for that stuff, it's just a bit more crowded.

Personally I consider it almost a complete zero issue.

8er, '06 has 440cc injectors, '08 has 330cc. Say you swap injectors. So you have an '08 ECU with '06 injectors. See the slight stumble? All mine did was stumble and load up at the top end rpm scale. Borrowed an '012-R ECU and find zero change between a 48 and cali ECU... Seat of the pants wise.

So from my experience, yes there is a slight change, nothing you couldn't use in a pinch. Nothing says you can't minus some pc5 numbers on that ECU and dial out the stumble.

Hub; But mine are a 2006 Cali ECU, and a 2006 49 state bike. Should be the same, but .... a slight difference.

Years ago I had someone send me a bad '06 ECU with a stumble in it. This was when I plugged it into my '08. Nothing out of the ordinary sans the annoying stumble/miss at 3,200rpm or there about. As you, I swapped along the lines of she being so close and all. And this was an '06 48 mapped for 440cc injectors against my 330cc's in the '08. Did I find an overheating problem? No. Was there any stumbles short of the glitch? No. Could I tell the difference? Not really. Did I flog it and come to find out I matched yours? No. I was more curious as to what a bad ECU felt like.

If there is a difference, the AFR meter could pick it up. I believe you. All I know is the map jetted the injectors fine. Those fat 440's numbers were squirting an ever so slightly rich setting with an ECU set for 330's, but I never felt a rich stumble unit the dyno picked it up.
