Insurance quote (full coverage) = CRAZY
12/21/20 7:41 PM

Guys, I'm in my early 50s with no tickets or accidents. I've always carried liability via Progressive (now through USAA) for around $70 a year on my older former 1000+cc sportbikes.

Progressive quoted me $650 USD per 6 months for my 2015 ZX14R... State Farm $550. Is this the standard for these bikes? Who do you guys use?

When is the right time to move over to liability only?

Thanks much. Never had a bike this new... all have been 20+ years old. Thanks!

I dropped both my bikes in the driveway by year two. I had a tornado hail storm hit my truck and a deer ran into it by year two. I'd say year two. If you go on paying full coverage rates, you might as well save that money for a new bike. You'll probably come out ahead.

Tickets are one thing but I believe insurance claims are another. If you make claims, they' will increase your premium at some point. I've never made a claim in 30 years. That's if you wreck the vehicle which I bet on not doing. If you ride where there are deer, you're looking at a lot less favorable odds.

Time to shop around

When I moved to AZ LiMu charged me ~$550 full coverage for the 2014 14R, along with the house car bundle of course

I had Progressive. I switched to Geico full coverage. I think I pay
around $300 a year. But then I'm old and slow. ( as far as they know)

Thanks guys. Geico just quoted me a little over $500 a year for full coverage. $500 deductible. I am also working with a local broker who is looking at other options. Geico is less than half
than State Farm Progressive and Allstate.

That is surprising about State Farm. They often come up in these insurance threads as being the cheapest. I pay them $23 a month for my 14R plus another $9 for my Yamaha cruiser and $7 for wife's Honda Super Cub. All have full insurance with a $100 deductible.

42 with no tickets or accidents. A+ credit. Tipped the bike over in a chain-reaction fluke accident while parked in the garage at home this summer. Parts prices were exorbitant but SF covered them and my agent had checked with their underwriter back then to confirm it won't affect my rates; it has not.

No other motorcycle-related claims with them in 10 years of riding and no at-fault accidents in cars ever in 21 years as an insuree.

That Geico quote is pretty decent compared to the others you posted. I would do a quick spreadsheet on your breakeven point and see when/whether moving to liability coverage makes sense for your type of riding.

Thanks guys! Keyboard Motorcycle carrier company just dropped the bike off 30 minutes ago. Absolutely stunning. Just printed out my progressive liability only policy and will take her out in a bit for a ride. I will crunch the numbers on the full coverage policy this week to see if that route makes sense. Please keep the ideas coming!

I pay to GEICO for a year liability $321. I never carry full coverage. I can pay for repair or replacement.
I remember ages ago, I had GMC through Rider Magazine. $150 a year including accesories on my 89 ZX10 Ninja and 86 Concours. Insurance is a rip-off, but I need it to get my tag. In AR I carry unisured and underinsured. Minumin in Ar is 25/50k liability. I carry $100/300k.
I've never had a Claim in my 49 yrs of riding.

I'm with Progressive.

I don't carry collision.

Comp (fire/theft/Damage)
Liability 250/500/100
Roadside
$0.00 deductible (due to disappearing deductible)
Discount pay full year

$219.00 annually.

Gents ..quick update. Signed back with Progressive with theft, vandalism, fire and wildcanimal collision coverage for $230 a year w/$500 deductible. Ok with that. Piken, thanks for the idea.

Changed oil/filter and have new tires, battery and double bubble windscreen on the way. The bike is just phenomenal...

I have full coverage on my 2018 zx14r now and had full coverage when I had my 06 hayabusa. Both times with State Farm which cost me about $40 a month. Barely $500 a year. No one else comes close. I even asked them about an h2 or h2sxe and they quoted me the same amount either way. Now having said that Im 56 and no tickets of any kind so Im sure thats part of it. In truth Ive been lucky cause I so deserve one by now..lol

Florida... $0, you do not need insurance. My bike stays in the garage, sad to say these people down here scare me so much that I rarely use the bike.

Wisconsin used to be like that. I miss those days. I'm starting to value insurance more as I get older but man, when you're young and can't afford it, it sucks...and that's when you usually should have it the most.

You wont believe how much insurance is for liability only in Ontario, there is 0 competition. Liability accounts for 85% of our quote so I always get full coverage. Most people would pay 2000 a year for a 14R in Ontario minimum.

I bundled mine with other products but still more than double USA

DAmn, I couldn't afford to drive. At those prices for insurance, I'd rent a truck and haul the bikes to the track a few times a year.

Hey gents and especially busabim.
Here in Quebec, as busabim I am sure knows there is no fault insurance on our plates. When I moved from Ontario in 2001 the plates were not bad and the other insurance through a private company was not bad. After a couple of years the plates started to increase, while insurance remained much the same. We have a few classes of plates. Over 400 cc bikes deemed non high risk and over 400 deemed high risk. |The plates this year for a high risk, which a ZX14R obviously is: 2,022.01$ Mostly for insurance. "Regular" bike is 698.21$

I've had State Farm on almost all my vehicle for 35 years. SF rates motorcycles by CC only - so your 1800cc Harley is going to cost more than your 1400cc Kawi. They also really don't like tickets - when I was in my 20's I had 2 speeding tickets on my record and that DOUBLED my insurance. Depending on your area, your history, and the kind of bike different insurers will rate them differently.

I was incredibly glad I had full coverage when mine was stolen on a trip. I did change my insurance from SF to Progressive after the loss though. I made out ok because I bought the bike at an incredible price ($10,800 OTD on a brand new 2017 ZX14r SE in August 2018). Had the bike been another year older I would have lost my shirt because they would have depreciated all my add on's to nothing (2 years). With Progressive I was able to specifically buy a given $$ worth of add ons for the bike & riding gear. It cost a little more but I wanted the coverage.
