Basic Tool Kit
05/28/13 11:40 PM

Hello Everyone,

New owner of a 2009 limited edition ZX-14r (the orange and black one).. WoooHooo!! Loving the bike!

The bike however came with no tool kit. I am looking at putting together a basic tool kit, maybe something a bit more comprensive than the tool kit that comes with the bike.

Any recommendations on the tools and the sizes I should pick up? Might I mention that I am on a budget and not looking at buying entire sets of wrenches and sockets.

Thank you in advance for your inputs.

regards,

Ak

A couple of alen keys that help you get to the internals and a flat head screw driver might be all that is required, but seriously there are some tools in the kit that are hard to find, I'd troll online for a used kit. Must say the 2009 escaped me and so far is my favourite colour combi! Post a pic if you can.

all I need from the kit to the gen 2 is the sparkplug wrench. I wouldn't bother carrying that on the bike though. That and the toll bow is worth a few pounds easy. I'd only carry a toll kit if I were going on a long trip ....maybe.

You can pick up a set of metric sockets and wrenches 4mm - 18mm pretty cheap. Harbor Freight, my friend. Get a set of allen wrenches while there. 4mm-10mm will cover all your needs.

You will eventually need some large, impact sockets for stuff like the rear wheel axle nut. Harbor freight. Buy a whole set for under $50.

LOL No, just best to use an impact socket. I use it on a 30" breaker bar. If you are torquing over ~10 'lbs, best to use a black impact socket. The chromes can split on you torque something tight as an axle.

never had it happen....broke some really tight bolts with a standard socket...but I have a set of large impacts from HF now. If you are going to buy a set of large sockets, no reason to get less durable ones. I don't think impacts cost a lot more.

thank you for the welcome Wolfman and others for your valuable input!

Does any of you have an 08 or 09? Can you please be kind enough to list out type and sizes of tools in your kit?

regards,

Welcome to our forum!

Tire patch kit. A CO2 variety.

I'm thinking of installing Ride On into my tires since I dont do much over 150 on any regular basis. I'll still carry the tire patch kit tho.

Fuses. These are the only things I've ever needed on a road side repair (not on this cycle, a different one was repaired roadside). So, make sure you have tools so you can get to the fuses... Oh yeah, all you need is a key.

Cell Phone. For everything else. Make sure it's fully charged when going for any long distance rides.

I dont know how much you wrench, but I do a small amount, mostly regular maintenance stuff. The guys who do large mods to their bikes should carry more tools, because they're much more likely to break down and likely will feel bad about calling for help (or they're broke because they've spent all their cash on the mods...). That's my opinion, based on my experience. My factory stock cycles dont break much, and they break less because I'm in there looking for stuff that looks like its getting ready to let go.

So, if you have not torn into it yet, now's a good time to bring out the fine tooth comb, dig into the maintenance section of this forum, read up 'n get 'r done.

Then, dont worry about the on-cycle tool kit too much. Honestly, I think back over the years and I've been very fortunate with my cycles, not needing much for a roadside tool kit. But, on the flip-side, I'm eyeballing my cycle with standard pre-flight checks before every ride.

axepsy, the 2008 and 2009 models used identical tool kits. The prices that Kawasaki charges for their kits and individual pieces is simply ludicrous. However, here's a list of the items with part numbers if you should choose to put a kit together for yourself:

Complete kit: 56007-0045

tool bag: 56008-006
50 PSI pressure gauge: 52005-1142
16mm box wrench (fancy plug wrench): 92110-1132
8mm box wrench (deep well socket): 92110-1174
32mm box end wrench (axle nut wrench): 92110-1161
handle for 32mm box end wrench: 92111-1051
adjustable jaw pliers: 92112-003
#2 Phillips/flat blade screwdriver: 92107-1052
handle for screw driver bit: 92106-1001
12mmX14mm open end wrench: 92110-0019
10mmX12mm open end wrench: 92110-1038
5mm hex key: 92110-1015
4mm hex key: 92110-3703

I have a local dealer that sells these pieces for $.50 (50 cents) each. They have them in a box sitting at the parts counter. My 2012 model didn't come with a spark plug wrench so I got one for $.50 from the box of goodies. There were two different lengths so I bought one of each.

Got a 2012 kit,
It's between Snuffy's suggestion or Fowvay!
Great options boyz!
Ps I don't invest much faith in the tool kit, I would rather purchase a stinger trailer to haul her out of a mess!
Peace boyz

The factory tool kit is ok. but I took out the spark plug wrench and added a multi-allen/socket tool and a front axle tool. The last thing you're ever gonna do out on the road is change sparkplugs and I have substituted allens for many of the factory fasteners.
