Got Rooked Yesterday, Angel Was Riding On My Shoulder....
09/27/10 11:00 AM

I got busted yesterday in the twisties, guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. I've been riding that same Farm to Market road for years and never saw a single LEO until yesterday, saw six of them from a County Sheriff and a Constable to small town PD. Second one clocked me on my CBR 1000RR coming through a posted 30 mph turn at 66 mph on radar. I couldn't believe it but after checking all my documentation he told me to slow down and enjoy my ride. Let me off with a warning, super cool guy, actually seeemed more concerned with my safety than writing a ticket. I had an 89 mile ride home and kept right at or under the posted limit most of the way, agonizing on a sport bike and passed four more LEO's on the way back. The officer that pulled me over said they'd been getting a lot of calls complaining of motorcycles traveling at high speeds on that road and so they were out in force. That was the best road in North Texas for twisties so I'm staring at four sport bikes with no where left to ride 'em. I'm bummed!

I know exactly how you feel Kruz. I feel like we should have our own separate roads and a different license category than other folks. Once or twice, I thought about trading mine in on a Victory, but I don't think I'd go much slower, to be honest.

He he ain't that the truth, I take the VTX out there and I'm throwing sparks in the corners. I'm having to rethink everything about how and where I ride right now. The interstate is just too dangerous, LEOs under every overpass it seems and these bikes are just no fun going slow, they're track machines with lights fer sobbin out loud. I took the show out into the country and it was paradise for awhile but all good things seem to end. I've been recently diagnosed with "Rooks Syndrome"...... i.e extreme paranoia! I feel thankful I don't have to deal with court costs and all but this is two pull overs since May. It's kind of like being all dressed up with no place to go. Even 1Bad recently told me his days of road ragin are over, yes, the "King of the HillBilly Hooligans", the "Texas Terror" has finally hung up his boots and is taking it to the track. Texas highways are once again safe.

Another thing really bothering me lately is Romans 13:1. Some of you believers out there with 14s and I know there are a few, may have already wrestled with this.

Romans 13:1

Did this start bothering you before or after the speeding stop? If before, maybe it was time to slow down...

The officer that pulled me over said they'd been getting a lot of calls complaining of motorcycles traveling at high speeds on that road and so they were out in force.

Could be temporary until they catch a few speeders. They'll probably go away again soon. -bg

You were led to where you are. The bikes were no accident. None of this is /was. You ask for guidance, Kruz. The right thing will happen.

Now about that Bible passage, i was going to bring it up a couple weeks ago... but I'm just waking up and I'm not about to call anyone just yet.

Romans 13:1 & 2 - Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

Specifically, I question "the powers that be are ordained of God" part. Are we to believe that these cops are "ordained of God", the same ones handing out tickets all day long when the speed limit is obviously not prudent in 90% of the U.S.? Are they not ordained from each State to help with extra money and not to ensure the general safety of the population? This is where I start questioning how the Bible applies to where we are now. I'm torn.

Before BG.... long before but I just tried to ignore it and carry on. Now it seems like I'm at a crossroads of some type. I may have to give up doing what I love to do. I don't see any way to enjoy all these bikes if I can't go fast on them. The track is the only thing left it seems.

As far as all those LEO's being on that road yesterday, Rook and I had discussed this just a few days ago. If you keep going back to the same place and riding it every weekend, you're going to draw attention sooner or later. I mean this place is remote but people still live out there.

I had ridden that same 34 mile loop dozens of times over the last few months, memorizing every corner and picking up my speed with each pass. It became intoxicating to see just how fast I could push it through there. I hate to say it but I was the reason all those guys were out there. All the more reason I couldn't believe he let me go.

It's not like this is a bad option, unless you don't have a track nearby that offers track days. I went to 4 of them this year, and this was by far the most fun I've had on 2 wheels.

This and my son's mishap earlier this year reduced my desire to go fast on public roads. It's still there, but it's no longer overwhelming...

You are fortunate to have some AMAZING bikes for use on the track. -bg

I'm definitely right there with ya buddy but I've been pondering that a lot lately and it seems pretty cut and dry to me. I know every time I get in my car though, even to get up on the Interstate, everyone is running 10 to 15 mph over. If you run right at the speed limit you'll get run over. The cops know that too so most won't ticket you for anything less than 10 over unless it's one of those speed traps. I think that's different though, I don't intentially try to break the law in my car, it's just that's the way traffic works. When I get on a sport bike though it's a different situation. I know I'm going to see the red mist, there's only one reason I'm even on that thing. This is where I'm conflicted!

1Bad, what you mean by "suckers". Y'mean that was all a lie about you givin up being the "Terror of the Texas Highways" for good? LOL!

LOL, if you ride fast, be willing to pay the price. A ticket is the lowest price you'd have to pay.

Real fast, knee-dragging fast, the cost could be your life, or someone elses, easy. See it almost every day in the news.

We have enough trouble with the governments telling the motorcycle makers they have to detune the engines and put harder rubber on the wheels if they want to sell them for street use.

Enough trouble with legislators wanting to clamp down, retroactively, on horsepower.... meaning one bad legislative session and your ZX14 is a museum piece. Think it can't happen? You got a whopping 13T dollar and growing US national debt, baby, 1/4 of it in just the past 6 months. Sure it can happen.

The point is, punks who want to act like racers on public roads, and who would have their asses handed to them on a race track against AMA amateurs, will be the cause of the next round of legislation restricting motorcycles.

It won't be the loud Harleys that cause it, cause the cops love slow, low, and loud for some reason.

You go Rook, you should have brought it up to me, maybe you did and I just wasn't paying any attention.

Naw, I was holding my tongue. Didn't want to be the pot calling the kettle black. I figured you would decide for yourself since you mentioned you had been feeling conflicted for some time.

Hey, pal, I did tell you that I didn't want to see you get a ticket and I never did agree with your assessment that the speed limit posted at corners was optional. Also mentioned that I have seen police out in the twisties.

If you keep going back to the same place and riding it every weekend, you're going to draw attention sooner or later.

It seems like we all make up little rules to keep us safe from tickets. Don't speed in corners, don't speed unless you have a clear view of what is ahead, don't speed in the same place repeatedly, don't speed in ares unless you are very familiar with them, .........................
These rules (even though the logic is opposed at times) might help to avoid tickets. It helps to be on your guard. At least you are watching for something. The fact is that our little rules fail at some point. The police do not follow our rules all of the time. Nobody ever expects to get stopped. or they would not have been speeding. The track is the place you will find freedom. It will cost you but so will speeding on the street.

Just give it a couple weeks and I know you will have a clear idea of what you want to do with this.

I was thinkin' maybe I wanted to move, but you guys make me feel lucky. I have lots of desolate cop free desert AND mountain twisties. No towns, no law, but also, no help for a long time if you go down alone....especially if you got no cell phone coverage And I even have a road course and dragstrip locally I just have to put up with cold snowy winters in the mountains.....and just plain cold in the desert. I hate cold Maybe I should just learn to embrace the winter?

The point is, punks who want to act like racers on public roads, and who would have their asses handed to them on a race track against AMA amateurs...

I know a couple of fellows, John McGuiness and Guy Martin being just two, that go awfully fast on the road and might beg to differ with you. They consider short circuit racers like your AMA wannabes to be lacking in fully developed riding skills. The truth is the skills to average over 132 mph on public roads during the IOM TT with over 237 turns in a 37 mile course are completely different from your typical short track racer who has maybe 12 turns to memorize with gravel traps and cushioned armco barriers on every corner. Ask top American AMA racers Mark Miller and Jeremy Toye about the differences some time. They were humbled when they went over there, road and short circuit racing are two different things, I wouldn't even try to compare the two.

Thanks Bean, that was actually the third time I've been let off on a ticket since 2007 while riding a bike, twice on the 14 and once on the CBR, been very fortunate that way. One thing that goes a long way as some have mentioned is your initial response when pulled over. I am extremely polite and have a non-threatening demeanor that tends to put them at ease. This officer was smiling when he got out of the patrol car and said "going a little fast around that last corner weren't ya'?" I just nodded and said "I guess I was officer".

Bean, some good advice....don't ever try and outrun your gaurdian angel!
