Clutch Basket Springs???
09/27/10 11:49 AM

As some of you know, I broke a clutch basket spring & it bounced around taking out the oil pump gear.

Anyway, I'm trying to track down 'why' they broke.

What function do the springs perform? They're just loose in the basket assembly held in by tabs ('06-'07 are fully enclosed, '08- are not).

Anyone know???

Thanks.

The clutch springs squeeze your drive and driven plates together (steel and fiber plates)when you release the clutch lever, without springs the clutch would just freewheel i.e. no torque transfer to the transmission and rear wheel.

Kruz,

That's the function of the clutch springs. I'm referring to the 6 little springs on the backside of the clutch basket.

Sorry LOL, you were referring to the hub torsion damper springs, my bad. Takes up power pulses off the crankshaft so you don't pound your tranny and primary drive train into dust. Similiar in function to the elastomeric hub dampers in your back wheel but slightly more elegant design. The harmonic blancer performs the same job on your car engine but typically uses a tuned mass suspended by an elastomeric that accelerates in the opposite direction of the power pulse.

Hope this helps!

Kruz, a friend told me that it MAY have been caused by the big heavy 240 tire that I currently have on (Dunlop Elite 3). It's a pretty heavy tire compared to the Pirelli Diablo (about 10 lbs. heavier!). Maybe the stress of the extended swingarm, longer chain, heavier tire, et al may have been too much for the drive chain????

Just a thought.

Distinct possibility, it's a chain of reactive forces, change one thing and you affect the entire system. We use a similar setup on our Merecedes-Benz 2.0L turbo-diesel aircraft engine conversion, see CAD drawing below. A slip clutch set at a break-away torque of 300 N-M utilizes the same type torsion springs. Each spring is progressively stronger than the next to absorb the hard hitting power pulses of the diesel engine. Without those springs the cluch hub disintegrates in short order due to resonance. If you're drag racing you may be operatng outside the stock systems design limits. A call may be in order to Brock's Performance or Schnitz Racing for a heavy duty hub package.

Kruz, since you work with aircraft, do you know Gary & Earline Clason? They own an aircraft servicing company in the Dallas area. We went to school together.

Not off hand, what is the name of their outfit and I can ask around? I office with Superior Airparts Inc. in Coppell, everyone in the aircraft business will have heard of Superior.
