Another Kawasaki
12/21/14 3:27 PM

Hello,
I've recently put a 2012 ZX-14R beside my other bike (2006 Vulcan 2000) in the garage.
It was purchased from a neighbour and has only 5100 km. (3200 miles) on it.
Gold Blaze Green or whatever it's officially called.
Too much ice and snow here in Calgary to get it out of the garage but I'm looking forward to riding it as I've never ridden a ZX-14R before.
I've ordered some Heli bar risers for it and that's all for now.
My insurance company gives me a great-rate IF the bike has an alarm system installed. Any suggestions on a brand/model?

Thanks.

Thanks.
I put 12,000 km. on the Vulcan during the first riding season I owned it and it's a great highway bike. I'm anxious to try the ZX-14 on a long highway ride to see how comfortable it is (or isn't) and then make adjustments from there.

Welcome to the forums, I'm down in Okotoks with my 08 zx14. I've got the LSL kit on mine and I'd recommend going with the tall bars (the place I ordered from gave the option of low or tall), I'm actually debating getting even taller bars to bring me a lot more upright.

Comfort wise, the biggest issue I have is with my rear end, I can do about 2 hours before I HAVE to stop as my butt hurts just too much, back is usually getting kind of sore, but changing riding positions (ie, laying down) helps with that. The Sargent Cycle sear I have is a LOT better than stock but its literally still a sore spot.

Who's your insurance company? I just switched to Allstate and actually saved quite a bit on the motorcycle (paying about $650/year now instead of $950 I was paying before). I'll have to call my agent up and see if I can get that number down even further with an alarm system too.

I'm with TD Insurance and their rates are pretty good as long as I have an alarm on the 14. The Vulcan 2000 and the ZX-14R are only 20 bucks apart for full coverage on each.

Thanks for the tip on the bars. I may go that route myself as the seating position is very different than my Vulcan Cruiser. I drove that bike straight through from Calgary to Vancouver (620 miles), spent the night and drove straight through back. And yeah, my butt was plenty flat.

I will find out this Spring what the 14 is like on an long ride.

One thing to consider is that the more upright you make the riding position the more weight you put on your ass and lower back. I put 1" risers under my bars and find the bike plenty good for long trips, along with a Connie seat. So, you may want to ride it a bit before you make many bar changes.

Thanks for the tip Maddevill. For now, I ordered the Heli risers and may just stop at that.

I'm 6'-1" and as I haven't even ridden one of these bikes yet, I think I will just hold off on anything else until I get a chance to see how everything fits.

I spoke with Grn14 today for 3/4 of an hour (great guy) and learned A TON of information about these bikes. I made a deal with him on a good alarm system.

Joining this Forum was a great thing for me!

Enjoy the upcoming Holidays.
