Does changing exhaust often hurt?
11/26/14 8:59 PM

Happy holidays to all!!!

I was wondering if changing my exhaust, let's say every 2-3 months or so, would hurt the bike at all? I have a PC3 and could adjust maps when needed, but I'm not sure if changing exhausts that often will do anything to the "bad" to the bike.

My bike came (used) with some Two Bros. on it (which I like), but I have some Coffman's (shorty) exhausts in my storage room that I would like to run with for a bit.

The main reason I ask is because my wife complains that I buy too many things and trade too many things for my bike, so I figure if I keep both exhausts this would sort of prevent me from needing a different style of exhaust until I get my full system next year.

I don't have to hate yours to love mine...

There are 3 basic stages to the cylinder vs. exhaust systems:

1. Intake: The exhaust is closed so there is no muffler altering the way the first charge enters the chamber think.

2. Overlap: At this stage of the game, both intake and exhaust are open and for every action, there is this fresh charge entering, and the exhaust pulling that fresh charge out with it. Whereas the reaction is where the muffler comes in. The open flow of the performance pipe has less of a push back for that every action [that opposite] is letting a fresh charge escape some. If a [stock] clogged muffler was used, the pulse back would be a touch more accommodating, meaning, it would slow the exhaust down and pull less of the fresh charge out.

3. Exhaust: The performance muffler is going to cause more of the fresh charge to leave, so in theory you use the pc to replenish that tiny bit of escape that occurred during overlap.

Do I need a pc for a performance exhaust? No.
Will engine damage occur not using one? No.
What if I told my wife I have 2 dual exhausts and 2 4-into-1's, I close the one side at the collector. No?
