Engine to trans ratio?
08/11/13 5:56 PM

On a 2007 ZX14 is there a gear ratio between the crankshaft and transmission? I see the the trans ratio in 6 th gear is 1.036. That would mean the front sprocket is almost at the same RPM as the crank, or is there a ratio between the crank and input of the transmission?

What is the ratio between the gear on the crank and the gear on the clutch?

Remove the right crank cover. Remove the oil filler cap at the clutch cover. Turn the crank to 1-4 TDC. Mark a fork web that is now exposed looking down into the cap hole. Count how many times the crank turns until the mark you made, shows back up at the filler hole = Crank to clutch ratio back to 1-4 TDC vs. the mark at the clutch.

I'm on the salt at Bonnevile. I dont have time to take it apart. Does any one know the ratio or the number of teeth on the gears. Thanks JC

LOL, sounds kind of funny you showing up without that sorta figured out? How long did you have this planned going to the salt?

One more time:

1. Clutch cap off. I now want to count the teeth or get close to it, is count each tooth at the clutch basket, turn the crank 360, you now counted off how many teeth are around the crank.

2. Count the teeth on the clutch basket, so finish off the count. There are you two numbers or close enough to figure out 6th gear and all that.

3. So yes, take the cover off and do the work. There is always next year is what you are learning now for.

On my way back home. Here are the speeds we turned. First run 185 MPH, 191, 198, 199, that is when I got the ratio I needed, next run 201, 203, 206 and the last run 209. We came up short of the record of 218. Thanks again for the help.
