Hit sewer cover
05/21/16 8:31 PM

So my new 2015 zx-14 with 700 miles on it.I hit a sewer cover that was sticking up because they had just grooved the road to repave it.It was dark out and no marker lighting at all for a construction zone.Little to say it almost threw me from the bike. The front wheel is bent for sure, but will check for more damage in the day light.Any recommendations on what else I should check for?

forks bent/leaking, steering pivot damage, tire damage, axle runout. That's all i can think of.

Sounds like you were not traveling very fast. I know a member who ran over a cement block with his CBR on the highway. He just replaced the front wheel and the tire and the bike was fine. For the cost of OEM, you might as well get a BST front rim. Get a BST rear later on.

hope your insurance is good to you. That manhole should have been marked with a light if the road was open. If there's any damage not covered (no pun intended) by your ins, I'd ask the paving co to pay. They probably won't but you might as well try. I imagine your insurance co will check if they are covered which I would think they are.

If you get a quick answer on the insurance and it's not good, take your car by there when they are paving and roll across the fresh asphalt by accident.

Can you post pics of the bent rim? Chances are bike is ok except rim. Tire might be trashed too, broken/damaged cords/carcass. I would check the bottom fairings and exhaust pipes if there was contact and to what extent damage was if there is. Check rear wheel and tire too, doesn't make sense the front would've impacted so hard to bend and the rear went through completely unscathed.

If you're front isn't been too badly it provably can be straightened for not much. BSTs would be pretty sweet. If you don't want or need to involve insurance, I'd go Ebay. Usually can get Gen 2 rims there for somewhere aroud $300 each in excellent condition.

Here's one listed for $350 with a make offer option that I believe is from your model. If it's in mint condition it's probably worth $350. If it has any nicks or scratches at all I'd say somewhere between $250-275 would be fair. I paid $640 for a brand new set off a bike with like 5 miles on them, they were literally showroom condition. http://www.ebay.com/itm/354-12-16-KAWASAKI-NINJA-ZX14R-FRONT-WHEEL-RIM-STR8-/361552766942?hash=item542e3967de:g:Y14AAOSw-RRXBo9T&vxp=mtr

If I were you, I'd do a suspension and steering play inspection. Make sure your suspensions not binding or acting normally (pump forks several times, check for notchiness, noises, proper damping). Do a steering inspection, make certain nothing got knocked loose. If you can check the bikes alignment do that too.

If you end up involving insurance and you're not sure what you're doing, just let a shop check all this stuff out.

I'm pretty sure John with the CBR also ran over the block with both wheels. The car in front of him swerved to miss it and he went over it. Front was bent at the bead but did not deflate. The shop tech said he could fix it but his insurance paid for a new one. Rear wheel was ok.

I poorly phrased that. What I meant was the rear wheel most likely ran over the man hole too. It is possible it's undamaged but I would still check the wheel and tire carefully.

Wow, I'm glad you're OK! How frightening!

Here in Tucson, we have someone "spiking" our sewer covers. Intermittently, on the news, are reports of person or persons placing upright screws the size of manhole cover holes (the smaller venting ones), sharpened to points, sticking straight up. Held in place with nuts. They just stop, drop'em in place, and then keep going.

They do it at night. So far, they're not caught, and no one is injured. But, just a matter of time.

Really, I'm glad you're OK.
