Wanna Ride The Dirtbike?..
11/19/10 7:20 PM

Thought I'd post this for grins, and a little change of riding. First ride of the spring for me this year, on April Fools Day even.
Also the first vid I took with the GoProHD.. 720P.
I'm not real good with the dirt bike, kind of a work in progress. Getting better since I took this vid, but still got a loooong way to go.

That brings back memories. Used to do off road riding when I was about 11-12. Lots of fun. I had places that were pretty wide open and treeless or wide two rut 4WD trails. Still don't think it was possible to do much more than 35 mph too often. If you go down on the bike trails in a wooded area, hitting a tree is almost a given. You have to find an open area to really push that bike and be reasonably safe.

You wouldn't believe how fast some people here can ride a trail like that. We're talking hard on the gas, 2nd and 3rd gear, on a YZ450F.
The guy on the WR250F that you see at the start of the vid can drop me like a bad habit if he wants. I'm getting better, but the dirt doesn't come as a natural to me like the street always has.
Still great fun.

Oh man! I love this, this is my kind of trail! I was watching and thinking I'd be hitting it hard all over that place on my WR450F! Hard on the gas, then brake! Off the seat, use them legs! I think I'm going to do riding this coming week!

As seat time goes on, you will see that it is less work to go faster than slower. You are currently riding both wheels through every rut(much harder, bike darts). Your buddy on the other hand, with the the four stroke(YZ-450)is walking all the bad stuff on one wheel, at will(4 speed with big power).
You have the light weight two stroke that's begging to get up on the pipe and needs open space. Much harder to ride going slow, bike bogs and can't pick front wheel over rough stuff. Practice walking the ruts on one wheel in the straights with the motor up on the pipe and stay lose, lose lose, never go straight arm and keep elbows wide with ass off the seat. Instinct will guide you. If your already racing a street bike two seasons and you will be on his ass.

I'm getting there, slowly. Seat time has been scarce this year, feel lucky when I get to ride twice in the same month (which hasn't happened often lately). I'm a little better now than I was when I did the video, but that video was the first part of the first ride I'd done in 4 months, kinda rusty.
It's not a big deal to me anyway, 53 years old and have to be to work on Monday dictates I don't ride too far over my head. That buddy of mine on the WR250F at the first of the vid, spent a week in the hospital and almost lost part of his right foot from a crash down there in the woods a few years back. I've seen people have to ride 4-5 miles on the back of a quad up out of there with broken arms, collar bones, ribs, etc.., that ain't any fun. Everybody has an injury story from that place, even I cracked 4 ribs in a crash there there early summer of '09.
It's a good time, but just as on the street, getting carried away without the skill to back it up can bring you a lot of grief.

Immediately after riding dirtbikes with my buddies I have to spank they're asses on pavement. They all grew up racing on dirt and make me look a fool. Pisses them off that the fat guy owns their asses on pavement.

Yup, On pavement, the first time I watched a guy pass me wide on the outside at almost 1 1/2 times my speed I learned my place. lol

I think all kids coming up from like 5 or 6 yrs old need to master the skills on a dirt bike, then, ride the snot out of it as much as the kid wants to for as long as they want to. I'm 45, and, this was me. I don't ride that often anymore b/c of work (self employment is amazing how it yanks your time away), but when I do, I hammer that thumper and float over the shit, it is easier to ride fast than slow.
