First of all, buy what YOU want and like and ABSOLUTELY NOT what your friends want. It's your money, not theirs. But as noted, be sure to check insurance, I'm an old fart and it's pretty cheap at about $300/year but I carry only liability for my 2008 ZX-14. Saves a bunch, I figure if I drop or crash it and it's my fault, I can afford to fix it.
You might consider a nice used one rather than a new one. Yes, the new ones are a bit faster but these bikes are so stinking fast and powerful you will not notice the difference under normal circumstances. Even a Gen1 ZX-14 will dust a ZX10 without even trying hard if you're into that.
I picked up my 2008 with just over 2000 miles and in mint shape for about 1/3 what a new one costs. So that leaves you a lot of extra money for upgrades and insurance costs. If you're looking at a new one because the dealer is offering financing, I suggest you reconsider that. Financing a motorcycle is not the best business deal (for the buyer) in my opinion.
