They came in the night for my bike and went home with nothing...
01/26/10 11:05 AM

Hey Guys

I had a close call with some wood be motorcycle thieves that had the balls to break into my backyard in the middle of the night.

Luckily I stored my bike in my house for the winter so when they broke into my shed they didn't find my bike.

So I would like any feedback from anyone using an alarm system

The scorpio alarm seems to have all the bells and whistles that I want but was just wondering if any one on the forum has it on there 14 and how do you like it?

Thanks Guys
Snuffy

Lojacket.... Screw the alarms. Probably some local that knows you no doubt. 85% of crime is associated with acquaintances/friends according to FBI stats.

Good for you. I'd just make sure you had good comprehensive insurance. There's not much you can do after thieves already are at your bike. You could shoot but they might shoot back. Hope you get your info on the Scopio. It couldn't hurt. It might scare a bike thief off.

Hub: Is there such a thing as notification to the authorities in the event someone tries to disable/remove the LoJack unit? Also, your thoughts on perimeter/sensing key fobs that disable ignition?

SnuffyZX: I'm guessing you weren't home when it happened, right? I might even suggest a motion-sensitive webcam that's always pointed at your bike or perhaps the perimeter of your property. Most of them nowadays have the ability to monitor remotely via the Internet and are quite reasonably priced. Gawd, I'd be so pissed if someone tried to take mine...

Scorpio 900. Works great. And no messing about with pressing buttons to arm and disarm when you use the auto mode.

Thing is that it will eat at your battery juice if the bike is not run regularly or no trickle charger is going.

Ya-glad they didn't git yer baby there!-house=good,backyard=bad.They won't find that lojack transmitter-the company won't even let YOU see where they put it-unless you are determined to see it on there.Only thing is-it won't transmit until the Police department gets a call from you with a stolen bike report-and they have to be electronically capable to activate the unit.So you might want to check with your local PD first and make sure they are able to connect. But that lojack really seems the way to go.I had a "immobilizer" alarm-quite spendy-on my Harley. It worked great at detecting movement and alerting me-HOWEVER-once the thieves figured out that by shorting a wire-any wire that was within the powerloop, the alarm would immediately sound.Naturally,I shut the thing off when I saw what was going on(they weren't there at the time). But shutting the alarm down opened the window for them to make their move when they stole it.Ya-I got suckered by the suckers!Oh well-with the money I got from the theft insurance,I bought my FIRST rocketship-a zzr1200.Great fun!Opened the world of sportbiking for me wide open!!!WoHooo!

Lojack is pretty secretive. Not much I can offer.

Dogs are great if you can train them to do the hardest thing in the world for a dog --only accept food from the master. If you can't do that, thieves will lace some hamburger with poison and finish them off with baseball bats. Mighty cold but I have heard of it happening. If you got something good, it's amazing how much damage some people will do to get it.

Had a 125 lb Shepherd for 11 years. He was the dumbest box of rocks you ever saw but nobody thought about coming in my place. The only thing he knew how to do was run back and forth and bark like those Rots. He did a great job.

Thanks Guys

Hub: I was thinking about the alarm and lo-jacking and having the double whammy on it. I was thinking alarm because I was home sleeping when this happened and if it had been outside and they messed with it the alarm would have sent me into the yard at top speed.

Matsuke: I know I was lucky on that attempt because usually the bike is in my backyard under my cycle shell cover and they would have taken it if it was out there.

Loadedmind: The sickest thing was that I was home and my shed is only about 25 feet away from my bedroom window and my wife who is a lite sleeper didn't hear a thing.

JDC: Thanks for the feedback on the scorpio...Did you install it yourself and if so how difficult was the install?

Rook: I'm working on the wife to get a dog.

WillidX4: Thats exactly what I Had in Mind!!! NO JOKE!!! Thats what they would have faced I they woke me up that night!

Darrle: Do you happen to know what the name of the GPS unit your friend is using?

Thank You All for the support and Good Advice.

I have the bikes chained together and also chained to anchors in the floor.
The garage also has motion sensors linked to my home's security system. My girlfriend and I park the cars in the driveway blocking anything going in or out of the garage doors.
I'm out of town more often than not, so that's always in the back of my mind- theft insurance is a must IMHO.

Yep Monster-I WAS a Harley guy at one point-thankfully the theft woke me up to the REAL world of performance!Ya Mass,I had a shed where I parked my Harley-and I parked my Sierra Classic truck in front of that.Friggin a-holes tried(in vain)to break the steering lock off the truck so they could move it out of the way-can you believe that?!If I'd had a gun at that time-I'd be sitting in prison right now.No way they're gonna get your bikes-too much work and chance.I surely wouldn't get a dummy camera-might as well have the real thing if yer gonna go that far.LOVE the shotgun idea-yes.....quite appropriate.

one of our electricians was having issues with people stealing from his work truck at his house so he wired up a motion sensor and left the lights out but ran the wires to his bedroom thru a light switch. When he was home he would turn the light switch ON and when the motion sensor was tripped the light in his bedroom came on awakening him and his REMINGTON 870..

Living here in New York for better or worse I know a lot of people with lojack on their cars and bikes. Two guys I know have had their shit stolen with it (one car, one bike) and both times by the time the cops got there it was too late. The car was declared totaled by the insurance people. The Ducati got torn down too with the instrument cluster, some electronics, wheels, an expensive seat, pipes and rearset all removed brutally before the cops found it in an abandoned warehouse, Lojack pinging away. As for cameras, there are lots of them around here that record all sorts of shit, but just try getting the cops to check out the businesses that have the tapes (or memory) rolling. They usually tell you something like, "Aaaay, Buddy, you watch too many cop shows on tv." Sometimes I feel like my bike's relative safety is more due to the bigger, crazier shit that happens all around it on a daily basis.

While there's obviously no way to make a bike theft proof, I go with prevention rather than trying to get it back. And you should too, SnuffyZX. Heavy chain with the lock and chain NOT touching the ground (a thermos full of liquid nitrogen and a hammer makes a lock shatter like glass - they pour it into the keyhole casually and come back a few times over ten minutes or so, very quiet to do), a Xena alarm/disc lock, and the Beretta M92 that lives next to my bed which is next to my window which the bike is chained to the bars of. The Xena while being sort of a lightweight among alarms is sensitive, portable and doesn't draw on the battery. The latest trick is using a portable hydraulic cutter which aparently will go through a hardened 1/2" lock shank. I've got to see it to believe it, but apparently bike and motorcycle stealing gangs/groups have been doing it.

You can't ever really relax and over the last 25 years I've had problems, but I 'solved' them one way or another. Most of the neighborhood kids know that the old guy with the bikes will go mental on them so that word kind of spreads. It may get mopped some day and if it does I'll feel very sorry for the piece of shit who takes it; if I see him he's gonna look like a sprinkler.

Yes it is a pretty simple install. Main unit to battery with in-between fuse. Additional ignition module cut off/enabler if you choose to install it, but I think it is included with 900 kit as I remember. Proximity, shake rattle and roll, and tilt detector built in.

When in auto mode, with ignition module also installed, you can shut bike off and walk away and it will auto arm and auto disengage the ignition. When you come back it will disarm and re-engage the ignition when you turn the key. If you are using a key.

The fob stays charged for me about a week at a time when I have it 'on'. the old 500 version would last 2-3 days 'on'. Maybe 1-2 hours install with a 6 pack and not knowing what you are doing.

I've thought about getting a Scorpio or something like it. Thanks for the rundown on the install, JDC. How do you charge the fob? Is there a little dock or something?

Thanks Guys

Jayfell what part of Brooklyn are you from? I was born and raised in the windsor terrace section of Brooklyn, I only moved out to staten island about 5 years ago. My buddy lives on ocean parkway and Ave C and had a silver 08 ZX14 parked in a parking spot up close to his building and 4 guys got out of a mini van in the middle of the afternoon and heaved it into back and drove off with his uncle in hot pursuit. Once they notice his uncle was following they started to drive up on side walks and down wrong way streets to loose him and they did. They got the plate number from a women who witnessed the theft and my buddy went out that afternoon to find his bike and low and behold while searching east new york he found the van but when the police showed and opened it up the bike was already removed...total lose.

JDC: Thanks for the follow up on the install.
