Tire dealers/mounting. So Cal area.
01/26/10 10:45 PM

Looks like I'm going with the Michelin Road Pilot 2. I'm also getting the wheels chromed.
Can anyone recommend a dealer with good prices? Do you know a shop you can trust to not damage your wheels?
I have a local dealer that removes/mounts the tire for free if you buy their tires. Seems like a good enough deal though I've never really compared their prices. I think they're competitive. It's been awhile since I've been there and now that I'll have chrome wheels I'm not sure if I want them to mount them. I don't want to do it myself anymore. Gettin' too old to fight with 'em anymore.

Do it yourself. Get some kids on it that does not have the right tools or they use some tire tool with a busted plastic protector that is beat up or not even there... You better see what place has the right setup.

Because of the environmentalist in CA, your chrome job might chip off. Last time I had chrome done, I tightened a screw over the chrome and you could see/hear it flake off. And I asked for 'triple dip' shits! You didn't take the wheels to some valley chrome'r in Van Nuys did you? Out of state may have more lax laws where the chrome is durable and lasts like a finish on water faucet.

If you can push the bead on by hand, that would be the best "OUT" so as not to mar the finish. Soap it up good and good luck!

My dealers shop scratched the edges of my rims when I had them change tires and I paid 35$/wheel. I'd bring it up anywhere you go. Course what are you going to do if they do scratch them? No pay, no wheels.

Good luck putting you own tires on without a tire machine. Sure it can be done but you will spend one hell of a lot of time and energy trying to save a few bucks. Besides more than likely you will scratch the wheels all to hell assuming you don't knock your own teeth out first. If you can't find a metric shop you trust find a place that does custom work ie. fat tire kits, chrome work and all that other silly shit they should be able to do it for you. Hell take the wheels off yourself and let a Harley dealer put them on for you they probably have lots of experience mounting tires to chrome rims.

There's how one guy does it. I would really be scared if i had expensive after market wheels.

Go to Mach 1 in Costa Mesa. I just put on new Pilot Road 2 and they are great. They have them in stock and recommend this tire for the ZX-14. They do a great job and have good prices. Tell them that the tall guy Jim with the red ZX-14 sent you.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it.
Looks like I'm going to M-C Tire Works in the SF Valley. They want $135 for the front and 165 for the rear. Seems fair enough.
They remove/replace the tire for free if you buy from them and bring the wheels in. $10/ea to balance and they give you the sticky/tape weights.
They'll also remove/replace the bearings and seals for $20/ea. They say they won't use a screwdriver to install them LOL.
They also have some chrome valve stems I hope will look good when I go over there.
As mentioned/suggested by one of you, they do A LOT of Harleys there so I know they have experience with chromed wheels. So it figures they should do a good job. I will look at their tire changer equipment anyway.
Hub, I thought I was going to get the wheels chromed at Classic Components (somewhere near Santa Fe Springs?)but I changed my mind. I really don't know who to go with and can only go by suggestions from this site, etc. The guy at MC Tire Works asked me who was going to do the chrome and when I told him he suggested going to Supreme Plating in Inglewood. He said they did his wheels about 10 years ago and they still look great. He added that several of the "Harley crowd" have gone there with good results. Seems good enough to me. He said preparation is very important (which I knew) and he believes they apply the chrome right. All I can do is hope. As for going out of state I know what you mean but I guess I'll take my chances.
Thanks again everyone.
