FINALLY!!!
11/17/14 8:34 AM

I finally got my new Shorai battery. Man I hate being poor. Had to wait almost 3 months to save the money to get it.
But anyway, I installed it and the bike fired right up. Charging system checked out good. Read the Shorai instructions: " Your battery comes with a 60% charge. Please take the bike for a ride to finish the charge."
Well....OKAY, if you insist! So I head up to the Wall in Berkeley. Man does it feel good to be back on the ZX. I've been using my son's 1991 CBR F2 and compared to the 14, it SUCKS! No power, shock worn out yeaaaach! I had the road mostly to myself, just had to dispatch a few cars..heh heh. So, next on the list is changing out the used, slowly leaking rear tire and new chain and sprockets. Hopefully it won't take another 3 months to do that!

I've neglected my poor Shorai. it's been 5 months without use and no maintainer. I have the maintainer, just never hooked it up to the battery. What a dweeb I am. I'll have to hook it up soon because the 14 is going to roll just one time before she sleeps for winter. Those Shorais are tough. I bet it's fine.

Here's a firsthand account warning on lithium batteries: My bro-in-law was having battery problems in his YZF-R1. We decided it was just an old, worn out battery, so I was nice enough to surprise him with a lithium. The dead battery probs continued, so he took the bike to the shop. They apparently jump started the bike with one of those boosters ... and we all learned that lithium batteries can't take the in-rush from what the lithium manufacturer called an un-regulated power source. The battery didn't blow up, but it did swell to almost a football shape. Totally ruined of course. We did get my $ back after quite a bit of arguing with the manufacturer, but I wouldn't want to have to go through that again. So ... I wouldn't try to jump start it! (if ever needed)

Note, though, that I just search around online and can't find anything confirming this. I can only tell you what happened to this particular battery and what the maker claimed was the cause.

With my above warning out of the way ;) ... lithium batteries are claimed to lose almost no power over 1 year as long as there's no drain on the battery. Of course, our ZX's probably do have a little drain, clock maybe ... although it's possible there's a smaller computer type battery for maintaining the clock and other CPU settings. Does anybody know?

I still have the original battery in my beautiful sapphire 2008. I`ll probably replace it in the near future. Is it safe to say that the Shorai is the way to go?

You'll get some people who will recomend this or that brand of lightweight battery but Shorai is what I have heard the most about so that's what I would stick with for my bikes.

If you wait it out to the end, replace the stock battery as soon as it has a weak start. Mine seemed a little weak on the first crank for some time and then it was just DEAD after the winter storage that followed (on a maintainer, mind you).

I use Lipos in my RC vehicles, and decided they can be too volatile for me to use on bike. I know lots of folks are using without issues, but risk is there. I replaced my oe battery with another lead acid. Not concerned with the weight savings.

Just my 2 cents

Shorai here...never any probs.Advise getting their charger as well...comes with pigtail for easy connection to battery(plugs into battery outlet/inlet...stays on battery)...and out to charger.Charger has
'store' function...I think the battery is like...2 lbs or something...

just under a pound and a half for the LFX14A2-BS12 which has the poles opposite of the stock battery. Shorai makes an identical battery with poles the same as the stocker. These batteries have the same specs as the stock battery but they are too small to fit the stock tray. There's a simple mod you can do so it will stay secure. The larger battery like Grn's is the one Shorai recommends for the 14.

The Shorai battery I got for my Honda RC51 came with a bunch of foam self-stick spacers of varying sizes for sticking to the battery to make it about the same size as the OEM battery, so it sits snug where it should. Worked perfectly.
