Would You Run?
12/06/12 7:19 AM

With draconian speeding laws now on the books in many states, i.e. 30 mph over the posted limit means automatic arrest and forfeiture of your motorcycle, would you run or pull over and take your chances with the officer exercising his discretion?

I think a lot of young guys are going to make a run for it, myself I pull over IMMEDIATELY if not sooner. Over 30 is a Class B Misdemeanor offense here in Texas, evading arrest is a Felony and they will probably throw a lot of other charges at you. Yes, you might get away but then again you might not and a Felony conviction is a life changing event.

Best policy IMHO is to pull over and trust the officer is a decent human being.

What are your thoughts on the subject, run or stop?

Several key points about running.

A) Video in the squad car or on the cop bike has enough resolution to bring up your license number. So you get busted at home later and thrown in jail.

B) You can't go fast enough to outrun radio waves, nor helicopters which can go 230+

C) Only an idiot runs, since the penalty is hugely more than just the speeding ticket, and you WILL get caught.

Trying to outrun the Police...fergetit.Ya might ditch em somewhere along the way...but the odds of that are pretty low.Then...it's face the music...much worse than just stopping in the first place.ALL HOPE of a break is gone.....you might be able to pull it off somewhere like here...but not many other places.Just too many troopers.Looking for your bike.Everyday...all day.For a while anyhow. No thanks.Place like here.....they probably all know me anyway! It just wouldn't work for me.

I, too, did it way back when, but no more. Stop and take your medicine. Run and you could go to jail or die.

Good, I think we're all on the same wavelength here. I want the officer to see me braking hard before he has a chance to even get his lights turned on. Probably best if you can come to a safe stop before he can even get stopped and turned around, that way he knows you are not a flight risk and he can relax. If you run and do get caught, they aren't going to play nice when they do catch up to you.

I am not advocating running by any measure. However, should you manage to get away, they can not come to your home and have charges stick if they can not prove it was you behind that dark visor.

I heard rumours he's gone....,as in dead... but don't really know for sure. He'd take off his plates and play with the cops in the videos I saw.

Depends of the situation. On a tight backroad with LE going the opposite direction, I'm taking my chances. Fleeing is a felony only if the LE flashes and siren you and you're still going. On a tight road going the opposite direction he/she doesn't have the time to flash you so why would you stop? Now if the officer is waiting for me at the end of a turn and we both can see each other, sure I'll stop.

@Privateer: Helicopter can't do 230 plus, maybe combat helicopters, maybe. They stay with you by gaining altitude. Watch most of the chase if the guy is doing anything above 150, the helicopter is going up, they only stay in you vicinity because you usually can sustain those speeds because of traffic etc

I know they said it's a Eurocopter...but it looks very similar to the Kawasaki B117 model.Wouldn't that be somethin?A kawasaki chasing a kawasaki...notice they used a zx10;)..or is that a 6?

Candy Plasma Blue chopper...hmmmmm......which came first...helicopter painting...or.....Ninja zx14's?

Helicopters don't have the forward all out speed of a sportbike...they're done at around 180,190 tops. They wouldn't maintain that for long anyway....too close to Max Vne.While the sportbike's just starting to breathe...the helicopter's sayin.."I need to take a breather".Those straight lines...get ya every time!

I'll have to remember the deal with the Powerplants and Military bases and Airports...next time I'm out riding ;)My closest one is like 7 miles from here(not much thrill in 7 miles...definitely NOT worth it)...(hell...wouldn't help anyway....EVERYTHING is wide open around it)....nowhere TO go but stay on the main highway;)......High speed chases here ALWAYS end up in..."Go to jail".All of em.

This big Ninja...even with the Ktrc won't do offroading worth a dam!
That guy talkin about ditchin his bike and bailin to the mall...mmmmm...okay...ya gonna do that with yer cherished scratch free Ninja?I DON'T THINK SO!!!!

I think a lot of young guys are going to make a run for it, myself I pull over IMMEDIATELY if not sooner.

Yep, I've done it and watched it more than once. 50km over and a 10,000 dollar fine with bike gone, Equals Run.

These New laws place everyone in danger. Stupid stupid stupid. What 16 year old kid on a 600 can afford it,,,,, So, they run. Sad but is currently the way things are.

I'm older now but I always ran because I just did not have the 90 bucks,,,,, what would a kid do today for 10 grand and loss of his pride and joy and never to ride again because he can Not afford his new insurance rates which have now become 6000 a year. Not Good.

They have now made a situation where it makes sense to take the chance,,,,,

Maybe I should not have posted these remarks but it is a sore spot with me. I don't want to run but I will ???? Bank on it.

If they cannot get beg behind me and follow, it is not running.

If they actually are in pursuit and you run, you better have it planned out.

Same with me I try not to talk about those things online but it pisses me off so bad, I feel like it's a little middle finger to the law not the officer which I respect lol
I have been stopped 3 times since I have been in Texas and both times the officers were nice and courteous and gave me a warning. All of them were Sheriffs or city cops who didn't really care about quotas.

Funny Story: A couple of years ago on my way to the gym I was riding behind this car. When the light turned green, the guy floored it and proceeded to get on the interstate. His car didn't look impressive but I said to myself another moron who doesn't know or recognize the bike with "the 4 headlights". I straightened the bike, top of second gear, passed him on the shoulder on the right, top of 3rd, 4th gear. Looked behind me, the guy is gone like a pigeon in a magician hat. LOl Full of adrenalin of course I got to celebrate, 4th to 3rd to 2nd 3/4 throttle, little wheelie and I'm back to cruising in 3rd. I stop at the first light downtown and here is the guy, behind me. I'm laughing he must have done 150 mph to catch me at the light. Then the tinted window roll down and the guy flash his badge! lol I'm thinking should I turn right and park or go for it? Nah, I'm wearing my shoei with the mirror shield so I stare straight ahead of me and act like I don't see it. You can see the guy is laughing. The light turn green and I ride 5 under the speed limit make my turn, check behind me, the guy go straight. A big sight of relief! loool You never know. I didn't stop because I thought he was probably a detective or a Special Unit. He wasn't going to pull me over and issue a ticket and had bigger fishes to fry. In Omaha the same summer, there was a group of FBI cars, and an Assault vehicle, they were going slow and impeding traffic, I flew by them. Later my buddy asked me if I was crazy. I didn't see them until the last moment and when I realized I understood they weren't going to do anything. I'm pretty sure that most of us have gone by detectives or special units guys over the limit but they just don't care which is a good thing.

If they cannot get beg behind me and follow, it is not running.
If they actually are in pursuit and you run, you better have it planned out.

yes and yes.

those 'quick right hand turns into the dirt road' thing can be pretty dicey...LOL!!!Ktrc or not!.

Dirt bikes are the best weapons for hooliganism. There is a video on your tube... A cop car chasing a dirt bike, the cop tries to go over the railroads and gets stock, he has to call off the train. looooool

no helicopters, and very few cops around here, but I have the only red bike I've ever seen in this area. All the cops know me, and they'd be waiting in my driveway.

If they actually are in pursuit and you run, you better have it planned out.

A plan ???? Once lights go on any plan you may think you have goes out the window.

If you get away with it, you go home and shake for a bit and your confidence builds for the next time, Not Good.

If you don't get away with and think you did, you could be at home for 15 mins or so and 4 cruisers 8 guys could ascend on your house, break in, and drag out by the wind pipe as your family watches in horror.

You may also be blessed enough to watch the toe truck driver wrap a belt around your pride and joy and let it dangle from the back as they take it away with front wheel dragging on the pavement.

Yep, they say that can happen. Cost is high if it goes wrong.

Never a good Idea but with these new laws & insane fines you are going to see, Sadly, allot more of guys taking the chance.

You are quite incorrect. If they get your license number on video, they don't have to prove you were the one in the seat. You are legally responsible for the motorcycle, and unless you care to turn state's witness and finger someone else, you will be charged and convicted.

This is what they call precendential law, its been adjudged this way many times, in many jurisdictions, and even withstood some court challenges.

Most big city police departments operate the Bell 206 Jet Ranger, Max speed 225km/h (122kt), max cruising speed 214km/h (115kt).

122KT is about 135 mph so if it was a straight line with no traffic you could in theory make a run for it. However, in the real world, roads aren't straight and the chopper can fly in a straight line plus if you hit traffic then you have to slow down. The chopper also has a height advantage and can direct gound LEOs into your path to block. If a chopper is on you, faghetaboudit it, pull over and lay down on the ground and wait for LEO to arrive....and hope he is in a good mood!

Don't run, if you get spotted over the limit pull over as quickly as possible, put on your biggest smile and say "Howdy Officer". The impoundment and arrest laws are there to give LEOs the ability to fight back against the punks who are ruining it for everyone, 150 mph down Central Expressway in Dallas on the back wheel! Dallas County now has a no chase policy dictated by their insurance provider and these kids know it, they actually taunt the police.

If you pull over, are mature, courteous and admit you were going a bit too fast, you would be surprised at how many times they will either give you a warning or reduce the speed to a simple ticket saving your butt. A lot of the LEOs in Dallas are also motorcyclists and understand the urge and performance of these machines. Most are decent guys and don't want to ruin your life over a brief squirt of speed on your bike.
