Rust?
03/18/10 1:08 PM

Sup,

Wondered if theres any way to go against the Rust/etc. that's appearing on the Manifolds for example, and other parts thats very exposed to all weather elements when riding.

I thought WD40, but i don't think this is a good idea in the end.

Probably ceramic coat your manifold-something along those lines.Mine developed the "rust" color-and it is rust. But it hasn't gotten any worse than when it first appeared. That's around 30,000 miles.Never have cleaned em off either.Don't know if that's good or bad-never really thought about it.I suppose you could paint em maybe with some manifold high temp paint of some sort-dunno.

i dont think wd40 and an exhaust manifold would go together very well.

WD or keep some old drained oil in the new oil container once it's empty of course. Then you soak a rag, wipe the oil down on the metal and clean it as you rub the oils on. Do not wipe off. Let it burn/evaporate off. When you see mud on it, wipe it off with water. Then, oil it again from top to bottom. The oil will burn in and act a coating you do it a few times. But it is better you stay up on the more wetter climates like the rain is your enemy you wipe her down with even a hot pipe and let it burn off. By the time you undress with helmet and gloves, there is not enough heat in the pipe to light off the oils. They need a flame or a cherry red pipe to catch fire, or you standing there with a running engine and throw oil at it, then yeah, I'd stand back, especially with the WD-40.

Don't even bother yourself about the brown headers, Matsuke. That is normal. Mine were purpley brown by 200 miles. They might look bad but That surface corrosion isn't going to rust through. Mine were solid as new after ~12,000 miles even though they were discolored. There was no problem removing header nuts. It looks pretty rusty but it really could be called an thinly oxidized patina more than a true rust film.

I do not think there are a lot of bikes that will retain a like new look to the header. I was once told that there was a Honda manufactured that had headpipes housed within a chrome pipe. The real pipe on the inside looked like crapola but it stayed nice and shiny on the outside because that was actually a false pipe you were looking at.
