Crashed her!
03/23/16 2:10 PM

Last night heading home from work, coming around a corner I have ridden thousands of times only this time I lost the front and away she went. Got some help getting her out of the ditch she ended up in. Rode her home the 1/2 mile I had left to travel.
Damage.
Bent fork
Broken front fairing
Broken screen
Broken Right mid fairing
Rash lower right fairing
Broken front brake reservoir
Broke the connector thingy that connect reservoir to master.
Ground down slider
Tore up riding pants and scratched my helmet.
Seriously bummed and mad at myself. So I am shopping for parts!

I was not hurt ATGAT!

Glad to hear you are ok, gear really does make a huge difference. You will get the bike back into shape, will insurance be any help?

I was thinking that as soon as I read the damage to your gear. your own parts are the most important. I'm really sorry hear about your bike. I'm glad to hear the sliders did not damage the frame. It sounds like the bike did not go down on the pavement. Good luck with the rebuild.

Easier to get another bike than it is body parts for people.

THat sucks glad you made it through. Bike sounds totaled by insurance standards especially as I'm sure thats the major damage and not little nicks and scratches will be all over it.

Best wishes whether you repair her or replace.

Man that sucks!

Same basic problem happened to me in Dec 2014. I had full insurance and GEICO paid off big time, even gave me $500 for the helmet. I ended up getting a lot more for the bike that I could have sold it for before the crash so I ended up with a sore right arm, a bit of rash on my right boot and Vanson jacket and the '14 14R BBW.

Sure glad you are ok!

Thank you everyone for the well wishes.

I did not contact my insurance agent, I am just going to put her back together myself. My wife had an accident last year (her fault) and our rates are coming back down at the end of this month so I think I will just keep quiet about it.
I have sourced a set of forks already, I did consider upgrading the forks, but I cannot find any info on what other model forks might fit the 14. Now i need some plastics etc.
I stripped her down completely last night and I found dirt in the strangest of places lol. Some of the damage to the plastics was not as bad as I first thought, and i can probably remount most of it. Cosmetically it will be ugly, but I can get her going sooner then replace as budget allows. I commute almost year round so its weird driving the car to work. Last year I only put 3700 miles on the car. I did an oil change on the car in November 2014 and only changed the oil last month after 3700 miles lol.
@Chrly They are the LP pro impact no cut sliders http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/LP-USA-PRO-IMPACT-FRAME-SLIDERS-KAWASAKI-ZX14-06-10.html
The right side slider took a beating, but is still usable.

Before you throw the forks out make sure they are actually bent and not just twisted in the triple clamps. It takes a hell of a hit to bend upside down forks, especially both of them.Hope you get back riding soon.

I'd definitely consider Ohlins forks--whatever model is made for the 14r rather than replacing with OEM. To me, the OEM forks are not bad if stiffened up enough but if necessary to replace, might as well go with something a little better. My FGRT 807s are a little more stable (no severe dive) in cornering than OEM was. I'm sure the updated FGRTs are also very good.

RE: Crashed her!

you can also have Ohlins install internal spacers to extend the travel quite a bit (I have this) and there may be other options available.

The disadvantage to Ohlins forks is that you can't raise them very much. Like an eighth inch and that's all. Also, the torque spec for the lower clamp is about 7.5 ft lbs and that makes me afraid to try wheelies. Many people go with Ohlins internals and stock tubes which is cheaper and seems safer to me. The weight difference is within a couple ounces. If you're into bling though, why have Ohlins if it looks stock? That's a lot of money to forgo the bling.

The point was made on this thread that if you go with an aftermarket rear suspension, it may be best to have the front upgraded too.

Personally, I think the changing only the front would be ok if you find the rear to be adequate in performance. The front was always the weaker part of the equation on the Gen1 anyway.

@Rook... OHLINS drool! That's just a bit out of my price range. I did have Racetech internals in my now bent forks, and I will have them transferred.
@ MADDEVIL I did confirm that one is for sure bent the other appears straight ish

Glad you're OK ... and you sound like you'll get the bike back in shape ... SO ... what happened?? Too fast? Slippery road? Sand / gravel? Just trying to learn ... Thanks.

@exrapolator. In the words of Casey Stoner my "ambition outweighed" My "talent". I believe too much trail braking combined with just that extra bit of lean. Front washed out on a right hand slightly off camber corner. I could feel it as it happened, I recall thinking no no no then boom. The no no no was me saying that to myself.
My right knee hit closely followed by my right shoulder. I rolled once and came up into my feet. Would have looked cool except for the bike sliding across the road and into the ditch.
I always ride in decent riding gear. That day was an admin day for me at work and I was wearing dress pants and a shirt. However I wore over pants with CE knee armor, a leather ICON jacket with armor, Sidi boots and a bell RS1 helmet. Gloves were summer Teknic gloves.
No injuries at all, not even a bruise. Not sure if my speed probably 20-25 mph I'd guess

Ah, I see tks. Great to come out unscathed after a down.

BTW the fastest rider I know uses no rear brake at all. I've tried that but sometimes just can't keep my foot of the rear brake pedal, at least a lil bit.

Damage update. The lower triple clamp appears to be bent. Replacement forks were not parallel and would not line up with the upper triple. I should have a replacement lower triple today or tomorrow. I had hope to have back on the road yesterday, but now it maybe mid week or next weekend. I had planned on going to Austin for the MotoGP this coming weekend, but now I am unsure

@Hagrid That only happened once or twice.....ish

You could always fly into the meet @ Austin? Just go, have fun, forget your cares for awhile.

Nice! Great paint scheme especially like the wheels and seat. Just the right balance and proportion of colors.
