Done a few more mods
09/15/13 11:07 PM

I've been smashing out the mods on this animl. I've got all the damage prone painted panels clear protective filmed now. Wow, the amount of hours spent doing mods that their success is measured in their invisibility. Believe it or not, but the whole sides of the tank, side grilles, and knee panels in the pic below are all covered in film. I've also fitted new factory knee pads, new tank pad, Heli-bar risers, Yoshimura fender eliminator with custom harness and plate carrier, Supersprox Stealth sprocket, tinted Clear Alternatives rear lenses and I've stripped and hand polished the wheels. Just finishing off the front one tonight. I should get my Akraprovic headers back from the ceramic coaters later in the week, and then I'll get the front bodywork off and fit my new tinted front lenses, modified light globes and headers. More to come next weekend.

Hey 1400. Thanks man. You have to be entirely COMMITTED to want that tank pad off. The adhesive holds on to the tank with even more aggression than it holds onto the pad. I tried everything in my chemical arsenal to get that adhesive off without actually stripping the paint. The only thing that came off easier than the adhesive was several layers of blistered skin on the sides of both thumbs from rolling and peeling the adhesive with a heat gun to soften it. Once it was gone I worked on the residue with Shellite (similar to Prepsol). This stuff is nuclear proof. Patience and commitment is the key.

Looks really nice, I especially like the film, you can't see any lines or wrinkles and it looks like it covers the entire tank. I did a 3M kit on mine, however it didn't cover the entire tank and the exposed areas have rock chips from rocks bouncing off my jacket and chipping the paint! :(

Actually Nightmare, you're right. There is not a single wrinkle on the 17 pieces I put on. They are the 3M Ventureshild. Most of them required making my own templates, then cutting and applying the film. There is not a single bubble or imperfection, apart from one piece on the left side of the tank where a single white hair must have floated in on the breeze during application. It's going to drive me insane seeing that every time I clean or polish it, so that whole piece will be getting re-done.

Hi Lumiera. If you are interested, I can do a step by step when I re-do my tank piece. They were probably the scariest pieces on the bike. There are a few simple tips and tricks which make it an achievable job to do well. Perfection just takes a little patience. The same techniques can be applied to anything that's applied with adhesive. I use exactly the same techniques in applying stickers, decals, tank pads and knee pads etc. There's not a single bubble to be seen on the whole bike.
Hey Sweet, can you give me your source for that sexy flip plate...

Sorry to disappoint Wolf, but it's not a flip plate. That's just the Yoshie fender eliminator plus a backing plate I made to exactly fit the number plate, with a little piece for the rear reflector and wiring harness for the LED plate light.

You just want that plate to flip up and disappear wolf? Do you want a sure fire guaranteed to work every time cable operated flip up? Or electronic one button quick flip? I will custom build one for you.

That's my next purchase. A motocross bike!

Mine is a TE630. It's not a MX bike. It's a 600cc dual sport. Big and heavy for a motocross bike, but still quite a bit lighter than the big adventure bikes. After mods, it weighs in at about 320 lbs. Exhaust alone (OEM steel to Leo Vince full ti) saved 17 lbs.

To compare it to a Japanese bike, it is more like the Suzuki DRZ400S or a Yamaha WR250R, but at the same weight with twice the power. It has about 60 HP, where the DRZ400S puts out about 40 and the WR250R puts out about 30. It has a 6 speed gearbox and is fuel injected.

I have a cool little tuner box for it, sort of like a power commander, but with buttons on it. You can program it anywhere, right on the device. No computer hookup required. It is from these guys: http://www.jdjetting.com/

It feels heavy when compared to a MX bike, but it feels like a mountain bike compared to the 14.

Most MX bikes don't weigh much over 250 lbs. Mine is fairly maintenance intensive compared to a street bike, but a lot less maintenance compared to a MX bike.

I have about 12,000 miles on mine. It was the 15th bike off of the assembly line (VIN ***********000015). I have already had to replace the cam chain and gears. It'll probably need a new top end at about 35,000 miles.

Anyway, sorry for the hijack!

You know what would be super cool? Wire it into the speed sensor so it flips up automatically when you reach a user-specified speed.

Love the look of those sprockets. Only down side they are a bit chunky in the weight department.

Thanks for the input Romes. You know, in the mad rush to get the wheel back on the bike I clear forgot to weigh the sprockets. Do you know how they compare with the OEM sprocket, or are you comparing with aluminium sprockets?
