ZX 14 2006 Display
08/29/12 1:59 PM

Hi guys,

Today I was riding my ZX14 2006 and during the ride I noticed that the digital display was giving me bad reading for example: First when I put some gas on it she gave like almost 163 miles to be empty but the after 30 minutes riding with no much speeding it gave like 80 miles to be empty the rise to 117 miles. I really don't understand what is really happening, is the display has to be recalibrated or just is bad display?

On the other hand, I was testing my new Shinko Verge tires and I have to say that in one ocassion I speed up to 110 mph and it felt just great no vibrations just slick and the grip was outstanding, giving the fact that I'm learning to ride and I'm not the tipe of guy that likes to go 3 digits, but at 44 years old it just felt awesome. I don't know if I'm going to speed up like that again specially here in Puerto Rico which everybody drives crazy and you never know who's going to be on your way in a second. This is my first bike ever and I have to say that I just love it, also I have chronic lower back pain but after riding I don't feel nothing.

I assuming your 'range' function,yes?Well...if you use more fuel(speeding up)...your range will drop.Nothing wrong with your LCD or meter.I can get mine to display...get this....250 miles!....cruising at 60 in 5th,and going downhillLOL!!!!We both know that's not possible The ECU is calibrating the amount of fuel in the tank...against the usage of fuel at any given time.Everything's good with your meter and such.

I will say though..my 14R does get better mileage than my 07 ever did.My mods are practically identical as well.

So, your telling me that is giving me normal readings? How can I rely on such display? However, how does the display gets calibrated? Don't give me wrong, I love this bike and won't trade it for nothing although I'm 44 year old when most people of my age would ride a normal old cruiser.

"How can I rely on such display?"....it gives you a value to compare your riding behaviors with. That's what it does...so you can get an estimate of how much or how little throttle apps you need to make to get optimum range/mileage.It isn't exact...but very close...close enough to tell ya how to make it to that next fill up if yer payin attention;)

Trying to calibrate mileage with fuel usage is VERY HARD to do just going by static values. It has to be running to get your info.Like moving uphill or downhill...staying at a set rpm and gear. It's going to fluctuate pretty much between those two.Wind direction....windscreen shape...all that plays into it as well.Gear choice.RPM's.It's all connected.

Headwind or tailwind..gonna affect things quite a bit.Tire size.Gearing combo.Upright or tucked in.She does have 'sweet spots' in mileage..you just have to find what they are.

I almost never pay attention to my digital display, only to check my gas gauge.

Thank you guys, I guess this is just the beginning of knowing better my bike. There is another thiing, yesterday I put 87 octane fuel by mistake and I knew that was 90+ but I guess I did it because I'm used to fill up my car with 87. Does fueling my bike with another octane with harm the engine?

I use it when I'm just messing around. It's fun to hammer it and watch the mpg sink.Knowing the whole time it doesn't mean anything. The range thing works to a degree.I always check my MPG to the actual zeroed out trip a meter and actual gas used.Use my calculator.Which doesn't really matter cause I bought it for speed not economy.Just something I picked up from my Dad in my teen years. It's usually 34MPG.My speedo is accurate now so I'll see.

I run 87 in my bike all the time. Just make sure it isn't detonating, listen for pinging under high load, low RPM situations. Should be fine for normal riding.

Want to hear something odd?I filled my bike up and it took 5.1 gallons.Close I ever ran to empty.Well I was riding down the road and the speedo read 0.WTF.The closet I got to stop was about 5 miles. The cluster read 1.3 miles 100 miles range.I checked the wiring and one of the wires pulled out that went to the speedo. So I rode I think 40 miles and it still said 1.3 miles 100 miles to go.Have to take part of the left side apart to check that speedo wire.I knew that cable was short.Have to reroute it.
