Decisions, Decisions
07/29/11 8:02 AM

I am not a zx14 owner yet, but I hope to be. I have a 07 zzr600 that I enjoy, but it is a little small for a person of my statue (6'-2", 245 lb.). I have a chance to step into a zx14 and was wondering if there are any issues that I need to be aware of on the 06 models? My zzr is in excellent condition with 2,300 miles. I could possibly work out a trade on an 06 zx14 with 9,000 miles. The zx owner is asking $2000 difference. Is it a good deal, or should I just wait?
By the way, I am an older rider (45) and have a Boulevard M109 for those days when I just want to cruise.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I just got in touch with the owner of the 14, and we have negotiated to a price difference of $1,500. I will be stopping by to check it out tomorrow and go from there. Not sure what you guys mean about the secondary flies. Is that a problem? The bike currently has a set of carbon fiber slipon mufflers (not sure of brand). That seems to be the only upgrade, other than a body kit switch to 08 LE plastics. I will have a mechanic with me to check to make sure that the bike hasn't been damaged.

Welcome. Go to search and type secondary flies looooots of threads on it. Basically the restrain the amount of tq and hp you get below 6000 rpm. They're easy to remove. Just make sure you ride the bike with them in for a while before you take them out so can really appreciate the difference. SINCE you have aftermarket slip ons, I would also install a pc3 and dowload the 06 07 edr map Dogozx donated to this forum. Have fun.

the price sounds great some things to look at ...Tires at 9000 they should have been replaced or you may have to soon, let the bike idle for like 5to 7 min just to see if cooling sys is ok ie.fan comes on ,temp guage works then make sure the brakes are in great shape by riding it at low speed apply them slowly feel for pulsing then faster speed samething.the reason I say all this is some people have werecks replace there plastics (guages as well).
Then just plain ask if the thing has ever been down, 9000 miles it should be very clean.
My 07 has 4000 miles on it and I have replaced the rotors twice (although from wheel lock and fall) ,they are just cheaply made they are known for warping

You'd be on to a great deal if all is well good luck and welcome

Thanks for the tips and information guys. I went by and checked on the bike yesterday afternoon. The bike actually has 9,400 miles and rides and runs nicely. It was originally blue, and he replaced all the plastic with 08 LE pieces. He also replaced the radiator, and the swing arm with a red one to match the fairings (the swing arm wasn't damaged). The problem that I have with the bike is that it has a salvage title, and he hasn't ridden it much since the repairs (only a couple of miles). I don't think I want to trade me practically new bike, for a bike that could have some hidden issues. The other down side is that the salvage title would make it harder to sale if I decide to switch up in the future. I think I will have to hold on this one, and just keep my eyes open for the next deal.
Thanks for your help.

Finally found my new toy. I took the zzr600 to the mountains last weekend, and road the Snake and some other roads around Mountain City, and Boone, N.C. The bike performed flawlessly, and I decided not to sell. Just as I was about to remove my add, someone came by on Monday, and made me an offer that I couldn't refuse.
I found a mint 06 zx14 about 2 1/2 hours away, and brought it home today. This is better than I even imagined, and the power seems endless. It will take some getting used to, but I definately have the greatest respect for this machine. Now, I just need to try this on the Dragon and such, when we go on our yearly trip to the mountains. Still have the Bagged and fairinged Boulevard M109R, but I think this one will be a keeper as well.

Congrats!!! Just make sure you get the suspension set up right. The 14 handles like CRAP if set up wrong, ( the previous owner of mine only did the freeways, thing wouldn't turn when I got it.) Otherwise, ENJOY!!!
