The Lowdown on Going Downtown
01/26/13 1:09 PM

LOL I'm not a big fan of going downtown but this is worst LOL. So basically, I was heading to meet some guys this morning for a group ride and about 4 miles from the house made a left turn into a little back road. For some reasons, I had some intuition about the whole thing. I woke and saw it was drizzling so I told myself:"stay in bed and get some nookie, sleep late and have wifey make you something to eat". Then again, I was like I haven't been in a ride in a while and even if it's cool and drizzling... beside I could always get nookie later on today. lol
Once, I got on the bike, it was still drizzling so three times, I told myself:"let's just turn around" but I was thinking about the roads we were going to hit and those are my favorite so...
I was going down hill at about 45mph, downshifted from 4th to 2nd and proceeded to lean the bike, I was probably going at 30 mph into a 90 degrees left hander and once I saw I had the proper lean angle to make the turn, I fixated on the exit and got back on the throttle. I was really smooth and going slow so I had no reason to worry but the motor went from a smooth vrrrroooooom to VROOOOM and next think I know I'm getting sideways, there was no time to think about what to do and I don't think I chopped the throttle. The Pilot Road 3 regained grip like it was going out of style (which it was) and next thing you know I'm watching myself playing Peter Pan while my bike is on some catch me if you can. I landed on my stomach, elbows and hip but before coming to stop, my helmet took a huge hit (head hitting the road). It's going to sound weird but I do a little bit of boxing and this is the most violent/pleasant hit I have received, you could feel the impact but the Arai Corsair V absorbed the shock so well, it felt like a deep tissue massage lol
I had my best gear on. Speedi Wind Pro One Piece, two weeks old Held Titans, Forcefield Chest Harness, Supertech R Boots. So beside a mildly sore hip, I'm good to go. Unfortunately, my baby didn't crash so well: Front Cowl, mirrors, windscreen, dashboard, bar ends, left exhaust can, both foot pegs, tank and a lot of other pieces are damaged. Even the left spool broke off of the swingarm, my poor girl was leaking oil out of the busted open pulser cover. My camera is at the shop but when I get it back, I'll post some pics. I won't be riding for a while and that happens just right after I replace a bunch of plastic

The bike must have rolled, maybe one time but the the frame sliders did a good job and except for the tank, the front and rear cowl, the plastic look decent. One of the frame sliders is loose so it could be that the frame is busted or at least the thread are messed up. I'm not in the mood to check though. I think the wife and I are going to be looking at houses this afternoon lol I'm really lucky just to come out of this with a sore hip. There was also some construction workers who put my bike on their trailer and followed me to the house at no cost. Awesome guys!

aawwwwwwe PHuk.

I hate this thing happened to you and such a beautiful bike. Really sorry drag. DAM.

Reality:

The coolant coming out of the pulser means you have a cracked engine. I would almost bet on it. I sure hope it was only the big coolant hose on the right lower side. That would be your only hope.

long and short:

This is now the down payment on your S1000. Insurance write off.

hope I am wrong, dragmeister. We'd miss you around here.

Most importantly, you're not all f'ed up. GOOD choice you made gearing up. Not as good a choice as if you would have woke the wifey up for a Saturday morn ride (instead of the bike)......but WAYYYYY better than if you would have taken her for a ride on the bike. That would have sucked 10x worse than anything.

Glad you are ok bro.

Yep but it's ok. The insurance will pick the tab up, that's why I have full coverage. That left exhaust can is pricy as well.... just under $1000. OUCH. I haven't had any at fault accident so hopefully they are going to take it easy on me. Just yesterday, I was thinking about putting BST's in my cart. There is a possibility she's going to get totaled although I doubt it. I hope they don't but if they do I'll probably get a liter and do a lot of track days. I'll know for sure by the end of next week, when I get the estimate.

Sorry, It was a typo, I fixed it. It was oil and after I stood the bike up and it stopped meaning it was coming out of that busted pulser cover! I would take the plastic off and check it out but rather not...

I'll stick around and see what you guys are up to even if I have to get the S1000RR! If I get that much $$ though I'll be tempted to get a CBR this way I can pay it off ASAP. That being said I like riding the street and the 14 is perfect for that. I just don't see a 14R in my near future though.

Hey Dragmeister, sorry to hear this but I'm glad you're OK. I don't know if you were around the forum back in May 2011 when I totaled out a new Gen 3 ZX10R but pretty much the same thing happened to me. I was trying to beat the rain and get home first and was going way too fast for conditions. It started to drizzle and an 18 wheeler swerved into my lane exiting the freeway.....done, I hit a slick spot in the road and it was skating on ice....bam! Bike slid into a traffic island with me hitting head first into the curb. I popped up with just a scratched knee but the bike was pretty much shot along with all my riding gear....luckily I had everything on.
This bites man but you'll have your new Beemer now a few months early.

Since then, if it even looks like rain, I stay home, it's just not worth the risk.

Yeah, I think I'm going to do the same, unless I'm caught in it. I was going really slow, there was just too many factors working against me:
1. Yesterday I was getting for the ride and because it had been cool 2 weeks ago I set my rear tire pressure on 36. It was at 35 yesterday and I should have left it alone but I thought it was going to be warmer this am and put it back to 38.
2. The Asphalt was cold, I should have checked the over night temps but I was thinking today was going to be just like yesterday.
3. CRIME SCENE just go East and follow Spicewood Spring to Lampass. I was making a left to stay on Spicewood.
Cars station there because of the gate. I didn't know and didn't care. My favorite spot to get back on the throttle was right there.

Again I'm glad I was going slow. I have only a few scuffs on my leathers, and the helmet took a huge it but has only some scratches. I love the titanium knuckle on the Held Titans, they are scuffed as well but the rest of the gloves look new. Thank god for Stingray. Somehow this little incident has made me more eager to ride. I found a little track in San Marcos 40 minutes from my place...

I think this or maybe this is going to be my new helmet

Kruz did the insurance let you keep some goodies off of the bike? Did they raise your premium?

Drag, with five machines in the garage, I self insure, liability-comprehensive only so I took a big hit on that one....about $9500 written off after all the smoke had cleared.

The bike was repairable but the front end was bent so I didn't want to chance it. I remember just wanting that wreck out of my garage.

Expensive lesson learned, if you get caught out in the rain, get off and push it home...lol!

As far as downtown snacks go... its the same as enjoying a seafood dinner. Except the restaurant is located at the wharf.

And its low tide.

Never was refused any personal requests after clearing my plate though. Silver lining?

Damn....glad u made it through out ok. Crazy how u many times u can ride in wet weather and have not one slip, then a simple crack of the throttle things go crazy. Question: with time to reflect would traction control prevented this? Or lean angle too great to recover?

thanks guys, yeah I feel really lucky hence the eagerness to ride. I couldn't take it and went to the garage, it looks like she will live! I wanted to send my ECU to Guhl so I'll have plenty of time to do that. For a big bike, the 14 crash really well! Like I said just the front and rear plastic, the tank and lowers, most of the plastic I have replaced a couple of weeks ago is untouched and she still looks good seating there in the garage. The frame sliders, rearsets and left handlebar bolts are bent but I hope the threads in the frame are ok. LOL The blinkers and the horn work but the high beam is kaput!

@Shogun: This is a big topic and I never rode with TC, I'll take that back I rode the 14R but I was not pushing hard enough for the TC to intervene at least in the mode I was in. Frankly I don't think so. The tire span a lot. I had chicken strips but the one on the left side is gone. There was just too much oil. When she went sideways she was really low to the ground, I was sure I was going to low side but the tire kept spinning and it regained grip, next thing I know she's doing the death roll. Also look at motoGP or World SBK when there is a hint of oil on the track those guys start flying all over the place and we're talking about pros, they have the best TC on the best bikes.. My lean angle wasn't great, I like to brake a little late but I knew the conditions weren't good for that kind of riding but they're were worst than I thought. Maybe I could have saved it with TC but I doubt it. Maybe, in this instance, with TC I would have low sided: The rear would have slowed down and I would have fell on my left side with the bike. To go slow and get thrown that high the disparity between the slippery spot and good road surface had to be too great. It's too bad I had the GO Pro on the rear cowl but didn't turn it on, the base broke off clean and the sticky got ground pretty well. Again wear your gear guys. Mine held up great!

Thanks Erik! I'm glad you also made it out ok. There is nothing like walking away from an accident!

DAMN DK! Sorry to hear about the accident! But I am glad you made it thru Bro! I hope that all goes well with the insurance and you get back in the saddle again soon! Gear up or don't go! RE: The Lowdown on Going Downtown

Somehow this little incident has made me more eager to ride.
Impressed to be reading this.

Me too. I can't imagine I would be feeling like you. Not this soon.

The frame sliders, rearsets and left handlebar bolts are bent but I hope the threads in the frame are ok.
Slider bolts are often made of softer steel so that they WILL bend. That absorbs much of the impact and protects the frame. It would be no big deal to get a new clip on or drill and tap threads for the footrest assy. I'm glad she is looking salvageable.

When she went sideways she was really low to the ground, I was sure I was going to low side but the tire kept spinning and it regained grip, next thing I know she's doing the death roll.

Wow. don't do it again. (well maybe on the track if you have to) but that sounds ...............really cool.

Otherwise we could be hearin' this story from someone else!

BTW, were there any other people around to see the crash? Did anyone try to help you?
