Accidental Kill Annoyance
08/16/10 2:35 PM

Does anyone else get tired of accidentally killing the bike (and it lurching forward into 1st) when trying to put it in neutral and, instead, hitting the gear shifter?

That is a much bigger problem on some other bikes, Kawi is known for its positive neutral finder. I don't have any trouble getting into N from 1 or 2 at a stop or rolling in the driveway. It takes a little bit of sensitive toe feel but I get it almost every time. Focvus on a half click to get to N. Just keep an eye on the gear indicator or neural lamp and that will tell ya. Also, keep oil level up and since your bike has few miles on it, the gearbox is still wearing in. I noticed a definite improvement to shifting smoothness around 12,0000 miles.

Sorry - guess I didn't explain properly. When I go to put the kickstand down, I accidentally hit the gear shifter as well and the bike lurches into second, thereby killing the engine. I guess my feet are just too damn big or something.

If I were in N and I were to press my shifter down accidentally while putting the kickstand down, that would go into 1. Reverse pattern GP style shifting, like you can set up with rearset pegs, it would go into 2.

never had a problem but I'm just a size 11. I always use my heal to step on the little knob stem that sticks out of the side of the kickstand. That is a good way to push the stand down and also keeps your toe pointed out and away from the shift lever.

I usually shut down in 1 with clutch in to prevent accidental rolling of the bike.

I have done it twice since buying the bike. Which in Dec of 06. So not an issue here. Might it be where you have your shift lever adjusted? Not wanting to be an ass, but maybe just not "paying attention"when you do this. Both times I have done it was from a "brain fart".

Okay....the trans is designed to NOT shift into SECOND from 1st,OR neutral into 2nd WITHOUT CLUTCHING.So if you're saying that when you lower your kickstand, and at the same time you're hitting the shifter into first....yes...it will drop into first without the clutch. So you must be doing that. And it just takes some practice to not hit the shifter.I lower mine with my heel using the kickstand nib as Rook does, and toes pointed out.But your bike will not be able to shift UP into second without clutching.... like sitting at a light in Neutral, and toe shifting into second just sitting there. You can as was pointed out go from second into neutral IF yer light on the shifter. It'll click right in.

PULL THE CLUTCH IN AND SHUT THE BIKE OFF BEFORE YOU PUT THE STAND DOWN!!!

Huhhhh......

I usually come to a stop, kill the the bike in 1st (clutch in), let the clutch out, theeennn, put the the stand down.

I don't ever let the bike idle on the stand in neutral, unless I'm warming it up.

Couldn't help being a wise ass. Maybe your talking about something more complicated?

Clutch it, then kill it, and THEN put stand down? No way I am lazy. Stand down equals bike off. HAHA Then turn key to locked, and walk away.

Wow - thought it was a simple question requiring nothing more than a simple "never done that" or "yeah, it's a pain". Thanks for all the asshole comments though - they're greatly appreciated.

Well shoot!Your time's coming...hang in there! And onward with the kickstand=killbike topic...since I lowered my bike,MY kickstand WAS too LONG.So to avoid the whole issue of not being able to keep my toes away from the shifter while lowering my stand,I just cut the prick off! Now every time I park,I just find a tree or somethin stout to lean my bike against...so much easier .

I thought my response was pretty okay...especially since ya said she "lurches into second"(she can't lurch into second by pushing DOWN on the shifter(unless yer stopping in 3rd?Yer not stopping in 3rd are ya? That would mean yer huge toes were somehow gettin UNDER the shift lever...quite a trick indeed!....similar to saying(as someone else posted)..."I changed the fuel filter". Ummmmm...okay It IS all in fun....gotta have a tad bit o'humor on here...otherwise,it's,well,"dull"(as someone else said).I mean....what you said that was happening...hell yeah,I've done it putting my kickstand down...of course...and I said to myself"what a fu#$%^ dumbazz.Just the stand...leave er in neutral will ya?" So I got a couple o' good laughs on myself. If we'd have said..."aint never happened",you'd most likely be pissed thinkin we're all a bunch of "perfect" owners.Prolly EVERYONE here has done it at least once.Kinda like bein "cool" with the Harley kickstand deal. You know...to be cool ya gotta kick that baby out there real strong and manly.Ya....and 9 times outta 10,the friggin thing would bounce back in the up position. So there ya are,MR.Friigin Badazz Harley guy, gettin off yer ride there,and....oh,by the way, she's friggin droppin...WTF?There goes your Manly composure, lookin REALLY stupid tryin to catch er before she hits... Naturally, she falls over...and there ya go!MR>COOL.And all the lookyloos are standin around thinkin"maybe he shouldn't be riding a motorcycle...especially one THAT FAT!" It's all good...enjoy.Yer always welcome to "give some back"...and you will if ya hang around long enough!

See..yer ALREADY gettin with it...
"thanks for all the asshole comments...they're greatly appreciated"....

Took me a while to figure the beotch out also....Didn't even realize that thing WAS the kickstand for geez...dunno how long.I kept kickin the shifter thinkin it was supposed to make a kickstand come down or somethin.
