unknown part
07/12/12 9:04 PM

I bought a used zx14 and it has a after market part I can't figure out. It is Velcroed to the ignition switch housing it has two ports that look like ether phone or cat5 cable connection it appears that it only has two wires connected to it one to ground one to the power. Does anyone have any ideas, I have looked on the net for any thing like it or might connect to it. All help will be appreciated it is driving me nuts.( Didn't have far to go)

My guess is an accessory that uses a phone type plug for power, like a heated vest.

You'll need a 'third party' server to upload your pics to...something like Photobucket or something. Then you can store em in there, and download to the site. They're free.Takes about 5 minutes to enroll.

Here are some pictures, I don't know if the words on the side are going to be readable but one says main the other is accessory. alg8er do you know what types of devices use this hook up. Grn14 they made it easier to load a pic now, I read about it in this forum in the last sticky. This is a good thing for me because I have tried on other forums and couldn't figure it out. Again thanks for any help.

PS I went to the dealer I bought the bike from He thought it was an auxiliary power port like alg8er suggested, but I still haven't found anything on the net that looks like it might hook up to it. Your text to link here...

Never seen any type of accessory that uses that style plug. Most heated gear uses a coax (or similar) style plug. With all the common plug types available (Powerlet, cigarette style, SAE, coax), makes you wonder why they went with that style.

What's it say on there? Those definitely look like phone jacks...but why they'd have phone jacks on there?A 'landline'?...IDK...never seen anything like that. Some sort of line(s) for a headphone?IDK.Plug a landline phone in there...see what it does?

Often what people use is terms of parts and hardware is a reflection of their job/experience/environment rather than industry practice or standard. A telephone jack is common and inexpensive to acquire. The original owner probably had good access to this type of product and felt comfortable working with it. It would not be my first choice for a motorcycle application (extremely low current, not very weather or corrosion resistant). But for charging a Cel phone, or powering a GDP it probably got the guy by. Investigating the quality and integrity of the wiring job (gauge, route, and source connection point) and if it appears sound..... replace the Tel jacks with a more suitable connector. It is always nice to have some power up front.

As for the writing Grn14 , it looks like it says "Main Line" & "Accessory" (which does sound like telephone terminology).

Thank everyone for their input. Hi audioboyz they are phone jack type, spyglass I think you might be right as after looking at it closer it doesn't look like an after market product I mean the wires coming from the connector is wrapped in electrical tape all the way to the ground and power wire. I think I am going to remove it as I have no use for it and the glue on the velcro isn't working well here in the 107+ heat.

Speaking of the heat my bike is black and is uncomfortable hot around the gas tank , I have looked at the stomp grip pads but they don't have a picture of the one for the zx14 and I am afraid it won't go low enough along the lower part of tank ( it gets hot on the lower part of the tank that goes under the front part of the seat). I know that they make a larger sheet that can be cut to size but I worry about two things first cutting it right and how comfortable it would be with the stomp design would be comfortable between my crotch. Has anyone else hand this problem and if so how did they handle it, I have a tank pad on there already.

Just for curiosity's sake...you DO have that rubber hot wind cover over the top of your engine under there don't you?Should be able to glance through the side covers there and see it on top of the valve cover.107 ambient temp is very hot for this engine...that's definitely not gonna help.

Hey Oldfool,

107 deg F (42 deg C)...... I would be hiding in my basement drinking cold beer from a frosted pint glass if it was that hot around here- LOL. In regards to your heat question, I can relay the problem my brother had with his 2005 Yamaha FJR1300. That bike was infamous for cooking the rider out of the saddle. I remember my brother telling me that the tank would get so hot it was unbearable to keep your legs against it wearing jeans. The solution owners followed was to put a layer of heat reflective foil on the under side of the tank. My brother searched around and considered several different self adhesive heat reflective foils. He ended up finding one that incorporated an insulated layer. He said it made a huge difference. You can also look at options like leaving the sides a little longer when you apply it to the underside of the tank to act as air channel or deflectors. I have not looked at the actual air path on the ZX-14 in that region. I do know that you can get a lot of different heat reflective materials, ranging from fabrics, foils, to card like sheets. Sometimes a little redirection (without hindering overall flow) can bring about relief. I remember one of the few times I rode my old ZX-11 without my boots in the summer (runners) it felt like the front of my ankles, where the tongue of the runner stopped, were on fire when traveling at 50km/hr (30mph) or less in traffic.

Check out this site they have a product line dedicated to motorcycles and should have exactly what you need. You can also check out their other lines if you are going to customize something.

Yes it has the rubber cover over the engine. I will try what you said spyglass about putting an insulation under the tank as this kind of makes sense to what I have observed that the top part of the tank is cooler than the thinner lower part of the tank. Thank you guys for taking time to help me into the sport bike community. I have been riding motorcycles for about 48 years but most of my riding has been on strait street bikes or dirt bike the last one I owned was a Vmax I rode it since 1988 so the handling characteristics of a sport bike is different and the electronics and engines are much more advance I have a lot to learn.

I'm not positive on this...but...I think there is supposed to be a 'sheild' like Spy's saying under the tank itself.A factory one.Sandwiched between the airbox top and the under tank there.Or a rubber cover thing there also.Maybe that's gone?IDK.Yes..there should be a rubber cover like the valve cover sheet. You can check if it's in there by taking that tank cover up...and looking in there on top of the airbox.

OR...may be easier...remove those aft side cover bolts...the ones that attach the cover tip to the tank(and frame)(back by the front of the seat)...and pull the top end outward(carefully)and see IF there is that 'blanket' under there. One loop of it should be attaching at the upper aft bolt when reinstalled. If it's gone...it could allow extra heat to hit that undertank.May be what's happening.

my escort 8500 x50 radar detector has a cord that looks like that - where it plugs in on the detector side. maybe its some rig so he could plug in one of those? see site below.

If I were you. I'd cut the wires, wire up either a cig plug outlet or coax (as mentioned) and put that outlet in the spare parts bin.

Grn14 it has the rubber over the airbox but I don't think it goes down to the part of the tank that is getting hot. The part that is being uncomfortable is where the fuel pump is mounted. I need to pull the tank and get another look but it is raining here today so it will have to wait (I'm made of sugar I will melt). Danno right now I don't see any need for a power outlet so I'm just going to remove it.

Looks like phone jacks to me. Appears that there are 4 pins in each side, that would make each side capable of two telephone lines each (1 line on the middle two pins and a second line on the two outer pins). Another indication that it is a phone jack is the labeling "main line" (telephone lines in) & "accessory" (for an answering machine or fax machine). If you take it apart you should find that the pins are strapped together from one jack to another. The wire feeding it appears too big for the jacks. It would be interesting to see how it's connected. I think it's the previous owners rig job. I vote for removing it completely.
