Amazing that I still get better in my 02 Corolla, hey? I think they simply don't bother with designing for fuel economy on the bikes. They should be able to get a lot better than a car that weighs 15X as much.
Good for you on the improved milage. I haven't bothered to note what mine is in a very long time. Just fill and ride.

Bud has a point there Rookster!Anyway...the stopping and starting averages in in the ECU.If you switch fuel modes on your LCD...go to INST.Check out your "real time" fuel usage.Your're gonna see some amazing values as you coast, throttle up,decelerate. You'll get an idea anyway of just how much fuel use can fluctuate.Pretty crazy.Your ECU is reading the values every ? seconds in "avg" mode.200 something feet...something around that(could be 300 something...can't remember just now...it's in the manual). But I don't do any math or anything.I only RESET the "avg" mode when I'm cruising at say,a nice speed...somewhere south of 70.If you allow the previous "calculations" by the ECU to enter in by NOT resetting, you're gonna get LOWER mileages, cause she's readin the high peak outputs(accelerations) from before, and calculating with those. But a nice steady cruise, with a "clean" calc board, and she'll read much more optimistic...which is actually your REAL present mileage(assuming you're not speeding up or slowing down).
You can check various gear combos, and rpm values....and see which ones will give you the best, and worst fuel mileages.Lots of accelerations are gonna ruin any "good" mileages anyway.Sustained high speeds are gonna lower your mileages, but even higher speeds can get some pretty decent mileages IF you throttle carefully.80 mph in 6th seems pretty good.60ish in 5th works pretty well.Today....6th at 65 was good.Air temps have a lot to do with cruise mileage also.Cooler, thicker air...seems to give a good burn.

I have found in the 60-65 mph range 5th gear actually has better mpg. I took the bike on a 171 mile trip recently, and compared calculated mpg with the instant shown by gauges. Gauges showed 40. Calculated was 41. This is on a stock geared bike, at 80 on freeway. Was a little city stop n go, probably less than 20 miles total. I wish my Jeep would get that kind of mpg.
