Caught in the Rain. What Motorcycle Rain Suit Do You Recommend?
11/12/16 11:17 AM

Have you ever been caught in the rain? Odds are, at some point, no matter what you ride, you're going to be caught out in a nasty storm completely off guard. Years ago, on my way to Maryland International Raceway, I had to wait out a downpour under a freeway overpass for hours.

What motorcycle rain suit do you recommend? Do you prefer a one-piece or two-piece rain suit?

Kofla, IMO it depends on your requirements.

Me, I am a guy who generally tours with the boys in good weather but we have been caught in the rain many times on 4-5 day trips. When we ride we normally roll at a fair pace when out of the cities so I have always been a full leathers guy. I also travel very light (to try and keep my luggage to a minimum impact on the bikes cornering performance) with only a Bagster Spider rear bag that has to hold all my requirements. So I need something that is very light to go into my limited luggage space but very effective in keeping me relatively dry. Therefore I have the top of the range two piece Rev It super light wets that fit straight over my leathers. They are top quality and surprisingly strong, fold down into next to nothing so take little room, and are quite straight forward to put on. (i would highly recommend anyone who goes this way to head into your local supplier in full leathers so you can make sure the wets are the correct fit). Combined with a good quality set of Alpinestar waterproof gloves I am covered. This setup is unlikely to be as efficient as a dedicated one piece all weather touring suit but it works very well for my requirements. Plus I hate wearing bulky thick gear and the protection of leather is also very important to me.
Thats just me. Hope it helps...

All my wet weather gear, tyre repair kit, chain lube, toiletries, underwear, jeans, tee shirts, jumper, pair of shoes, phone and Scala charges, water bottle, and anything else for up to 5 days need to fit into this.

What about the basic good lightweight gore tex pants and jacket I use backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Great at blocking rain but I would worry the wind/rain while riding would test it up? They pack up nice and small.

I really like my Olympia Horizon Rain Gear (jacket and pants)

I wear over my leathers. I probably wear more as a wind breaker when
temps fall into the 40's then I have for rain gear.

Made well, light weight, packs good, durable and fits well. Meaning
not baggy doesn't blow or wipe around etc.

I've never enjoyed wearing dedicated rain gear because it seems I always end up wet anyway, either from rain leaking in or sweating (summer), or maybe both. Instead I buy well vented riding jackets that claim to be waterproof and then just hope they are. If they're not 100% waterproof well that's kinda OK because it doesn't seem like dedicated rain gear really is either. Pants, on the other hand ... I wear protective riding jeans that don't claim to be waterproof (are there any?), and then reluctantly put rain pants on over them every once in a blue moon. I don't like wearing those either for the same reason: Leaks and sweating. So sometimes I just suck it up and let my riding pants get wet anyway.

I don't like riding when is raining, but if I get caught in the rain I want to be well prepared.

Tour master Sentinel 2 pc.

Ezx, I need to go to CycleGear tomorrow morning, and I was planning on trying on the Tour Master Sentinel. Even though it is on sale, they don't have my size. I prefer to try clothes on before I buy them.

Yannih, my preference is a light wet suit that fits well over my leather jacket. CycleGear carries a one piece Rev It suit. You just reminded me to order a set of jumper cables. I have pretty much everything on your list, never thought about carrying jumper cables. Thanks.

Rudy, if the GoreTex pants and jacket are waterproof, it should work just fine.

Piken, thanks for the links. There is a Revzilla store near me in Philadelphia, and the Olympia Horizon jacket is on a closeout sale for $53.00 dollars. I'll check it out sometime next week.

Extrapolator, I always said I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a rain suit, until a heavy rainstorm caught my ex-wife and me without one near a toll booth of a New York highway. We looked like wet birds, soaked and shivering, trying to endure a lashing rain storm.

Spent a few hours at CycleGear today, wasn't happy with the rain suits they had in stock. Only had "Bilt" on display. I guess I am going to check out Revzilla sometime this week.

I usually do not have to worry about rain on local day rides but if I am headed out of the area I wear my Helite Adventure Jacket. It gives me protection from the rain plus the air bag feature.. I don't have to worry about flapping loose rain gear ..I do carry rain pants just in case but legs do not get really wet unless it is a heavy rain .. Boots are Outlast RoadGear and have kept my feet dry AND warm for over ten years. Just recently noticed soles are pretty thin and time for new ones.. Amazing the way they kept feet comfortable in all weather... I wear WARM GEAR heated liner and gloves. Gloves do not make it thru really heavy rain and need a rain cover of some kind .

Wow, that's a 1000 dollar jacket, with an air bag! Getting my gloves wet doesn't bother me much. And I don't like to ride in the cold, so I don't think I'll be getting heated accessories anytime soon.

I, too, have a Tourmaster Sentinel 2-piece. Always right there in the tank bag, along with some waterproof gloves. Boots are good to go.

Key Kofla - I bought a Cortech rain suit and only good things to say about it. Completely amazing. I tested by riding a day that was pouring rain and by the time I got to my destination an hour later, completely dry. It's a two piece suit but I guess they might have them in a one piece. Comes with a carry bag so good to keep in a tank bag.

By the way, that helmet your holding, just bought it! can't wait for it's arrival.

KoflaOlivieri, that first picture makes me laugh every time I go on this thread :)

I'm in the same boat as chrly, my last (and favorite) jacket was a first gear Kilimanjaro, it was fully waterproof and I unfortunately got to test that a few times, the first gear pants I had were also waterproof (which has since worn away) but I think the biggest difference might simply be where we live.

I've got a heated jacket liner and gloves and live where it is generally colder and drier then a lot of the USA so "rain" for me is typically probably not as heavy and for as long as you get in Philadelphia. So for me a dedicated rain suit is unnecessary and I can wear an "all season" jacket since it doesn't get as hot up here as well. The warmest I ever ridden was 110f and I thought I was going to melt off the bike, but typically low to mid 80's is considered a REALLY hot day here.

Hi Kofla. Frog Togs - Toadz model.

I have different needs than you. I have dual sport, ADV, dirt, and super sport riding.

So, I prefer a 2 piece that I can pull over just about any gear I'm wearing at that time.

These work well for me in the wet. Add your favorite gloves, and boots inside pants, to complete.

A number of years ago I was in a pinch and bought a rainsuit in the sporting goods dept. at WalMart for about $25. Since then I've ridden 100s of rainy miles in it and am very pleased with it. I know you can spend lots more, but why?

I just bought a fully upgraded Aerostich R3 for my touring needs.

A bit overkill, but nearly indestructible as you can get in a waterproof textile suit. Takes 15 seconds to put on over street clothes, and it even comes with knee pucks!

Likely going to be a bit on the sweaty side, but you can't beat the protection that it offers.

jwh20 - so true..met some guys at the track who also bought those and stand by them. Didn't get wet either. Inexpensive to be dry, can't beat that.
