What size is clutch hub nut?
12/09/12 8:27 PM

I have a 30mm but it moves side to side about 1/8". Little sloppy. I measured the nut with verniers and it's right at 1.16" That's 29.5mm by my thinking. The nut is torqued at 101 ft/lb so no way I'm trying the 30mm unless I'm positive. Don't have any access to a 29 either.
I'd appreciate any help.

Ha!The infamous.."I can't FIND a 29mm wrench"...yup...been there....I used the 30.Put er in gear...chock the wheels.Hit that baby with that impact.A few times...don't just keep it on there.Hit it quick...it should come loose without rounding those edges.Just make sure you're going straight in on it...and if she's up on a rear stand...be careful about pushing into the shaft with your bodyweight.Straight on...quick bursts...break it free...make sure the 'play' is taken up before you go to turn it.

It's right in between that 30 and 29.Special Kawasaki socket.I think.Could be wrong about the 'special'...but I looked high and low for that in-betweener.I couldn't find one anywhere.

Maybe someone here...ROOK?knows about that socket.I used a 'black' one...1/2" drive.Nice big impact.300 something ft/lbs.Electric.Spun that puppy right off there;)....I know it's not much help:(

Thanks Grn, but if you remember, do you think it's a 29 or a 30?
It measures out at 29.5mm exactly. Obviously a TRUE 29mm wouldn't go on it. That got me to wondering if the typical socket is truly what it says or is it over a little??
If I can't get a positive answer then I'll buy a Craftsman 29 at the local store. Sears website says "in stock" and only $9.
Just posted this then saw your answer so sorry about the "29 or 30" question.

You think Kaw' might make a nut that's 29.5mm? That would be just wrong!!
By the way, did you use a clutch hub holder tool?? You also need to hold the hub still to properly re-torque the nut to 101 ft/lb.

Maybe someone here...ROOK?knows about that socket.

Nope ..just the countershaft sprocket nut. That was a 27mm and it has a larger outer hex which can take a 34 or a 35mm (so i'm told..never had to resort to that one).

I would try super gluing some sheet metal shims inside a 30mm to reduce the hex to proper size.

That got me to wondering if the typical socket is truly what it says or is it over a little??

I was wondering the same. A socket never fits perfectly on a nut. There is always a little slop. Question is: "which is the true size, socket or bolt head?"

I'd order the 29mm or better yet, this:

I went down to HF last night and picked these up. Set has a 29 and a 30. $35 bucks for the whole shebang. Only thing, it is 3/4"drive which is freakin huge for a bike. I got a HF $12 set of square drive adapters (not on the HF website) that will allow me to interchange these and about any of my other sockets and square drive ratchets and torque wrenches.

Well...retorqueing..okay..this is gonna fly against any real mechanic around here...I have a 250 lb electric impact.I do not torque to the values.I torque till it stops...and that's it...I don't keep hammering on it.Only till it stops the first time.I've never had one come loose in the case or the clutch nut.Every time I've had to go back and change a sprocket....it's never broken loose 'just like that'..it's always had plenty of torque on it...but not like the factory torque...I do not use a clutch hub holding tool either...I should...but I don't.

I've used power sockets for SAE.1 1/16 I think works on the front sprocket.Just veneer it and get the correct size being SAE or Metric.I have one for my top tree.
