Wind buffeting.
09/17/25 5:24 PM

Hi there people, I thought I would show how I fixed my wind buffeting problem with my gen 1. I tried a heap of different screens but depending on how windy it is out there I'd get pretty bad buffeting sitting right where I want to sit on the bike. For me, wind buffeting can make riding so unenjoyable so as to make me feel like giving the game up. But after a few experiments I found that if I strapped a nice high piece of foam on the tank the buffeting was gone. So my fix is to put a tank bag on the bike, in my case it has worked a treat. Small price to pay. I don't ride at stupid fast speeds so I don't need to get down on the tank. You can easily fit 2 bottles of Bourbon in the bag. That'll do me :)
I might just add, with the bag the bike is so quiet, not exactly whisper quiet but the general wind noise is right down now. This is the first tank bag I've had and I just bought the hardware so I can fit the bag to my other bike and it will be interesting to see how that goes. This is a real game changer for me so hopefully this might help someone else?
Cheers, Nic.

Interesting. If the bike was designed for optimum aeros with a rider laying on the tank, it stands to reason.

Wind buffeting.

I just received the rings for my Suzuki gsx1400 and so I put the tank bag on it yesterday.
With the gsx naked the wind noise is as quiet as you could hope for, better than the zx. Whisper quiet at 60mph.
I was just going to swap the bag over to which ever bike I rode but I reckon I'll be buying another bag soon. Not cheap but not bank breaking either.
I wish I knew this trick when I had the Suzuki Bandit, I sold that bike because of wind noise.

I've been riding for 54 years and wind protection is a big deal when I'm traveling. Ages ago, there were no wind screens until Vetter came out with his bolt-on fairing. I got a clone called the Windjammer and added it my 1974 Z1900.

I bought my 2012 to finish my motorcycle traveling career and set about modifying it.
(I've noticed when I search for old threads, the search engine stops at 2021. That stops most of my threads modifying my Bike.)
I made a trip to Arkansas in 2015 searching for a new place to live. Colorado was getting expensive and overcrowded with Californians and illegals. I posted a photo of my Bike with the 2-tier windscreen and Rook made a comment about that setup. Since then, my first Zero Gravity touring screen got hit by a rock and tore a 3" chunk of plastic. So I have made it my traveling screen with the OEM screen mounted to it. I added rubber wellnuts to this screen so I do not have to take out the OEM's everytime I switch.

Riding back to Colorado I got passed by a 911 Porsche in western Kansas. I followed him doing 125mph for 22 miles, he turned off the highway. None of my luggage came off or windscreen. Cliff Randall set the world record at the Loring mile for a bagger at 194mph, August 2024.
