Oil Light Came On! Crap!
08/18/10 11:15 AM

Cruising about 60 just outside Sequim, WA ... a 'kachunk' sound, oil light comes on, engine starts to sound like a tractor.

Pulled in the clutch, shut off the engine, rolled to a stop.

No engine oil anywhere. Oil window shows OK.

Oil pump???

Called the AMA towing number. They took me to the Kawasaki dealer in Port Angeles, WA. Free! Cool!

Dealer is backed up in service for 10 days! Oh, well.

Oil pump???

Hope that was all it was. Did here of one spun rod bearing story where it did not bust the case. Sounded like the same story you told.

Either way, you should be able to fix it. Good luck with the repair. Please keep us updated.

Rook, why would a spun rod bearing trigger the oil pressure light? Wish I knew more.

I imagine the oil light would not come on until the case busted out and emptied the oil on the road. when a bearing comes loose, the oil probably f;ows freely from the journal where the bearing was seated. That could send out a low pressure warning signal.

This is the way it usually went. Read down a few posts.

Heathun could probably give you some ideas about this. I don't know enough about it to give you any real conclusive advice.

With all of these ZX14 horror stories, maybe it is time to buy a Busa! I have only heard of two ZX14's in Cape Town that have thrown rods/bearings,and they have both been abused extensively. eg revlimiting while cold and wheeling forever. ZX14 does not like this. My son in law is finally taking the flies out of his (my old) 14 after 43000km (thats about 26500 miles) and the motor is still 100%. No blowby, no oil leaks, and it still goes like the clappers. Maybe it is only the bikes for the States that have this problem? Shouldn't be, as the motors are all the same. Strange. Have you guys in Oz got these problems? AS a matter of interest, has anyone else in the world had a problem other than in USA?

I tossed a rod right out the side of my engine and the oil light didn't even come on so not sure why yours kicked on....
WE need the Hub Back so he can give some insight.....

^^^and as usual, 1bad shows up with no valuable information after others have commented. Huh- and I was thinking 1bad might be the expert on blown motors........such a pity.

Apparently the oil light is designed to not react immediately. If your oil pressure drops because the oil suddenly rushed out of the side, I'd say it is a bit late to indicate anything, unfortunately.

I've heard of sportbike engines running for hours with NO oil before self destructing. Prolonged low oil pressure is not good but perhaps not as detrimental as we might guess.

I'm wishing for the best. I plan to go get the bike from the dealer & fix it myself. I use a very good oil so I'm hoping parts stayed lubed.

It also seems a bit suspicious that this happened after I pulled the clutch. I'm hoping it something to do with that.

your guess concerning the oil pump sounds solid to me from what you stated.

Feels good to know what the problem was. Glad it was not a bearing but who knows how serious the damage might have been if that stuff would have bounced around in there long enough. Looks like you saved it with a quick shutdown. I'm curious if the case gouging is even something that will require replacing. If not, should be a fairly inexpensive repair.

Looks like to me clutch got severely overheated and springs lost their temper got bent out of shape and fell out of the clutch caught on the oil pump gear and broke it. There you have solved in a nut shell. Next problem please.

I agree with kawnow.... the spring probably broke and took out the gear. Thats when the light came on.

Erik, that's what I'm thinking. But I really don't know what I did wrong.

I'm ordering the parts, doing partial disassembly, then taking it to the shop.

Another thing... as I was rolling on the side of the road, I picked up a razor sharp piece of obsidian (they were paving the main part of the road) in my NEW back tire.

Bad juju in August, so far.

Depends on how you look at it. That engine problem might have saved you from a high speed blowout. Things happen for a reason.
