Gp/ Custom Exhaust??
09/20/11 10:01 PM

Hello to all I will be buying a new 14 on 10.10.11 if it lives up to the hype.. Or else will be looking for an 07 SE or 10 SE. Like the color schemes. Any how, my ? is I get on here quite often and read the exhaust post. I notice Rook as a [b]Cannon exhaust, most people are all for Brocks Alien-Head, and M4's or muzzy m10 as for noise quality. I want to get a exhaust that makes a good amount of noise. Here in Fla we have no noise restrictions, and problems with people not hearing or seeing bikes. Im interested in all of the exhaust listed above, but my ? is. Has anyone done anything unique as far as mod there own exhaust or do something no one else has. (I.E.)An, Arata, Brodis, or Custom made exhaust. I looked online a guy has a DMS exhst mod that I noticed. I would want something different. Im coming from a GSXR 1k with full M4, mods to name it. So does anyone have any advice. Rook chime in because im all for the Cannon, M4 im familiar with but a guy who rides w/ my crew has an 08 se with m4's. I would pull up next to him and I didn't think his were louder than mine. It seems everyone has a Ahead or street meg. I dont do the strip. And the M10 seems as it sounds good but I havent heard anything. So guys help me out please chime in and give me your thoughts and opinions. What would be my best bet? Whats louder and best quality. Idc about the weight Im already a big guy.

Here is the link for the DMS exhaust..
Your text to link here..... I think I did that right. If not just youtube zx 14 dms exhaust..

The Cannon full system is 17 lbs which is about 2x as much as a a Brocks. It's the muffler. The part that looks so cool (IMO). It has many welded sections to make the curves and that requires a reasonably thick metal, I guess. Still, 17 lbs is a lot lighter than the stock system. It is the loudest thing I ever heard. Bit louder than a Brocks short meg.

If you do not care about weight, then I think the Cannon is what you want. The performance of a Cannon on a busa was arguably as good or better than a Brock's short meg. I would make performance an issue in your choice. Go with something that you see having a lot of owner support. Brock's is pretty tough to beat there.

If you go with slipons, the peak hp/tq will not be a lot different than stock. dual Cannons might look cool but what a heavy system. Still a lot better than the stockers but many choices are much lighter.

AFAIK, Cannons are no longer available from US dealers. You will have to contact the co in Japan, I believe.

M4s are nice light slipons. I would use them if I could get them very inexpensively but IMO, a good full system is the way to go.

Never heard of that DMS exhaust which why I would avoid it, personally. It does sound great in the clip but you can't go by that for loudness. Just gives a general idea of sound.

My performance goals philosophy is based on something I read on the old ZX-14 forum three years ago. That is when I got into this as a complete newbie. The idea is to follow the beaten path to a high performance vehicle. Follow the lead of others who have fast bikes. Do not try to be innovative with your choices. There is no way you will pick better equipment than what countless others have already established as the best.

Buy once and save $$$. Avoid creating your personal wall of shame (purchased but not used performance equipment that is hung on the wall as a decoration). avoid wondering if you made the right choice. It is much easier and cheaper to go with the crowd. Do your forum reading/posting like you are doing and the info is all there.

Any Brock's CT system. Akrapovic is also a very popular choice.

If you are not going to go to turbo, this will be the single most important performance mod you do so IMO, its best to spend what you need to spend to get the system that best meets your performance needs now and As much as you can tell) in the future. 2K$ for a good full system is about what it will cost unless you get in on some sort of nice deal somewhere.

Rook, thanks for the info. Here in Fla its either a Busa with a brocks or if you do catch a 14 its a brocks smeg or ahead. I want something different. Thats why I have been thinking of doing my own fab for an exhaust or the Cannon. I checked out their website you have to email them in order to get 1. (Bummer) Seems like it might be a rip off. Well its only a few more weeks to figure out what I want exactly. I want the total package noise and power. Hey Rook, do you have a sound clip anywhere on the web?

Why do you want noise? It doesn't help either torque or horsepower on a stock engine to have a wide open exhaust system.

I thought only Harley riders equated noise with horsepower?

Privateer, Thats the one thing I do not want. I dont like the Voodoo exhaust or the straight pipes. I want the performance side but an louder exhaust. Yoshi's,Ak's run quite. Thats why I have ?s on the exhaust. The tsukigi cannon is calling my name, the AH, or the m10. But you dont find many post about all of the above. You only hear about mid range response. Just wanting information, and wanting to hear peoples opinions..

Thanks

Forgive me brethren, Greg at HPC was a huge ZX-14 proponent (the ZX-14 is what he rode in LSR competition and his site was ZX-14) but with the much larger appeal of the busa, he focussed his marketing efforts on that crowd. He did tell me personally that the Cannon was an excellent system for both the busa and the 14. It was tested against a Brock's Short meg and a Street mag. They did not officially report the result but it was pretty obviously intimated that the Cannon bested the Brock's systems.

It should be mentioned that Tsukigi is not any little flash in the pan. They have been making race exhausts for quite some time and are revered much the same as Brock's is in the US.

Wind /helmet/earplugs/170 mph....you can still hear it(so I am told). If you are asking yourself if maybe it is a bit more loud than you might want, the answer is "quite possibly, YES."

Sound at lower rev and high.

The only thing that I do not think is acurately represented by the vid is the decel pops. You might hear them as little clicks but actually, they are a definite pop and very noticeable. The Pair block off helped reduce that. You will probably get that popping with any full system and some slipons too.

If I were to buy another system, I would go with an Akra or a CT. I don't like the look sas much but performance I think is tops there. I got a great deal on the Cannon and that weighed pretty heavily into the decision. No regrets but the CT and Akra are much lighter and well noted for superior performance.

Well Rook since you seem to be the only one commenting on the post. What can you tell me about the M10/Ahead/Cannon between the performance and noise coming from all 3. Right now im leaning towards the cannon, but if ANYONE has infor let me know. Is the m10/AHead loud? The only youtube videos are of drag racing..

Never heard an A Head in person but From what I read of others who own them they are very loud. Most people do not want an exhaust that loud because you never stop hearing it and it is a bit obnoxious on the street. At least it seemed so to me. I felt like everyone was looking at me with my Cannon on there and it was not a real comfortable feeling. I'm used to it now. Getting the decel pops under control helped a lot. I read a lot of posts saying that others do not like to ride behind a person with a loud pipe like an A Head. I can say for sure cages do seem to want to clear away from me when I am in front.

I was out on a busy day in traffic and turned into a gas station to try to find a shortcut and discovered there was no way back out other than how I got in. Now I was going to be even farther behind and I was going to have to wait for an opening to get back on the street. Must admit I was a little pissed at myself and exhibiting a bit of road rage. I turned around and started out the parking lot entrance slipping the clutch revving about 5 K rpm for about 2 seconds. It was like parting the Red Sea. The cars just stopped on the street and let me in like I scared the crap out of them. I normally don't act like that but on that one occassion, I figured I might as well take the opportunity to accept the path that was cleared for the insane biker since I struck fear into the hearts of everyone already anyway.

I have heard a Shortmeg. Almost as loud as a Cannon. The A Head would prolly be about as loud as the Short Meg. Muzzy full system I have heard on a 14. I think it was an an M10. Softer and more refined than the Brocks or Cannon. Prolly going to get that out of a can muffler more often than not. Megaphones would seem to be less muffled.

I noticed the M4s mentioned, but does not seem to be in the running, They are LOUD I had a set on my bike. Could be minimized by keeping RPM down. I may put another set on.Sold them when I thought bike was going to be the bank's property. Waiting on bankruptcy to finalize before I replace them. I would think minimizing RPMs could have a similar effect on the others.

Rook, how did you get your cannon not SS.. Any advice on where to get them from?

The black coating is ceramic and it was done at HPC. Mine has not held up well. After 3 years the ceramic is coming off quite easily. I should have it redone. I don't have any suggestions for you regarding a ceramic shop but if you are persistent, there are a couple of guys around here who have had had headers done and they know of a high quality shop that has reasonable prices. I plan to have a local shop do mine over. I am sure ceramic coating should last more than 3 years if done properly with good materials..

Greg Williams, HPC in Maryland is where I bought my Cannon. That is the same shop as the b/o busa you see in the first vid I embedded. HPC went out of business and the Cannons went with him. That is how I got the nice deal on mine. It was on closeout.
