First time out on the BST and Race Tec
03/06/11 12:05 PM

Guy’s it has been a long ass winter for sure!!! I went through my baby top to bottom. For this years winter mods I installed a set of BST carbon fiber wheels with pilot pures, Galfer super bike wave rotors front and rear with titanium bolts. New did x ring chain along with 17T renthal sprocket and 42T vortec rear. Also a stainless steel clutch cable and Manual cam chain adjuster. Then I sent the front and rear suspension to Rac Tec for gold valving and new spring rates. I did a few other mods like changing the dash panels and added a carbon fiber rear hugger and lastly added the Shori light weight battery…

Well yesterday I had her out for the first time and holy shit she’s a whole new bike! The bike feels like she went to Jenny Craig’s boot camp for a year! Honestly she feels like 100 lbs lighter and the suspension is such a difference and I haven’t even dialed it in yet. I still have to scrub the tires and bead in the new HH pads. But first time out was a great success for sure! I’ll add some pics to this tomorrow….Just wanted to let you guys know how she went!

It'd be cool if you could post pics of the new dash. I'm curious to see what mods you made. Also, what do you mean by "bead the HH pads"?

With the new pads and rotors I have to make a few stops from like 30 mph to 0 and then two more from 50 to 0 and then let them cool...

Good choice getting the Race Tech springs and valving, they make good stuff. Nothing to say about the wheels, its all been said... apparently you had to common sense to run steel bearings, not ceramics. I hope.

This is how you mod a ZX14 !

Privateer why do you say that? I never heard anything bad about them?
The Race Tec stuff is real nice. It's hard to explain....It's real firm but not harsh at all. I'm real happy I went that way for sure....

Tell us more about the Race Tech goodies.
Did you price comare them to Ohlins?
I would assume Race Tech would be lower by quite a bit.
Did they rebuild the rear or replace the shock entirely?

There's a Race Tech shop semi-close to me that I may be calling on.

gumbybob I sent them my front forks and rear shock. I think it was like $1,200.00 and they’re sprung the front and rear with stiffer springs and the serviced them and added the Gold valves....She rides great now. I'm 200 lbs. with riding gear and there is a big diff for sure. I was thinking of the Ohlin’s but I had just gone for the BST's and decided to hold off on the extra $$$.

REALLY nice stuff for sure, Somefun.
You did all the right goodies.

Where did you get the CF dash panels?
How's the quality & fit?

Sounds like you've built quite a little Superbike, nice upgrades! I've heard that the BST's do quite a bit for handling and power output. That thing will be stopping on dimes and givin' ya 9 cents back with those Galfer goodies. Suspension dialing will surely be icing on the cake!!

Yeah I rode her to work today and took off early to ride her some more....Man she feels great for sure! I think so far the handling is huge difference for sure. And just started rolling on the gas a bit and the difference is real nice. She lifts up like crazy in second and third. I haven't been in the upper RPM's cuz it still only 45 degrees and I'm sure I'll blow the new rear up in smoke if I get to crazy....But the best thing I can say with all the mods is she feels like a 750 and has the power of a crazy ass 1400!!!!

Thanks Guy's!!! I was looking for some more power and thought the handling would be nice. Originally I was thinking turbo but I ride 10,000 per year and a lot of the times I'm out in the middle of nowhere. I didn't want to lose any reliability of the stocker with the normal bolt on's so that why I started looking at the BST and other light weight mods.... Now after riding her the handling is such a plus I can't believe it. I'm real glad I went this route.

I like it...You can feel the change but it's not huge. I like it and I do a lot of highway miles and didn't want her screaming..... The gear chart saya at 10,800 in 6th is 205....Now I just have to test her out!!!

You have a good chance of at least reaching "right there" with those wheels on there.Mybe not 205...but she'll still go to 11,200...so.....

Glad you went weight reduction instead of bolt-on power -- if you don't mind me asking, what did all of that set you back? I'm guessing about $3500

Hellmutt They run $4,000.00 for the wheels and bearings but they were giving discounts in December and I bought them for $4,600.00.
