Unbelievable....just dropped my 14 again....
03/06/11 7:05 PM

I can't believe it, I was putting the insurance parts on this afternoon and was moving the bike around in the garage and the kickstand wasn't locked. Bike hit the garage floor on left side this time and did an almost exact repeat of the last episode, bar end, mirror, lower cowling and brake lever. It didn't get the pipe, middle cowling, upper cowling or turn signal this time. Total damage over $300 in parts alone. Five years without single incident and now two tipovers in just over a month. I'm sick!

I feel for ya buddy. This sort of thing has happened to a lot of us and in time, you get over it. A 0 mph dump is par for the course. Two of them -----well, that's getting a bit unusual but everybody knows the side stand on the 14 could have been made a bit more steadfast than it is.

Just slow down and do your wrenching a little at a time. I think that's all this means. A big reminder to treat the stuff with respect. The busted parts are going to get fixed but don't hurry it. You have 4 other bikes to ride so it's not as though you are wasting riding weather by having one tied up. Wish I was there.if you would let me work on your bike, you could go ride.......but you would be waiting a long time for me to finish the 14. I am the slowest, most methodical mechanic that ever lived.

Thanks Rook, yea I got in a bit of a rush then a wellnut tore and I didn't have a spare and I won't put it back unless it's right, then a second wellnut popped out on the frame and by now I was aggravated. Also found a busted pulsed cover under the right lower that the adjuster missed so I was seeing stars, also tired, should have called it a day, I was just fried and being careless. You just wouldn't believe how dejected I am right now.

Blue, I was finishing up for the day and moving the bike over to make room for the 6R. I thought I kicked the sidestand all the way down but apparently not. I'm normally very careful but I was very tired, had no sleep the night before, maybe two hours and had worked all day on the 14 trying to get all the busted parts fixed. Stuff happens, lightning struck twice.

I dropped mine in the driveway (kickstand, in a hurry) too, not long after I got it in 2008.

Nothing to do but start again. It is very frustrating, I know.

As bad as my knees and back are, I might drop it again sometime doing something slow if I don't balance it right.

Don't worry about it, you'll be on the road by the time riding weather gets here.

Of course, my definition of riding weather is ambient temperature 75 degrees F or higher with sun, none of this 65 degree stuff some of my friends do.

OMG Kruz,,,,,, To say I feel your pain would be somewhat of a understatement. Now I'm sick to. I know there are times when us guys should take a deep breath and walk away but we just don't,,,,,, Instead we become more determined and push even harder for results and more often than not, it costs us dearly. I've been in that spot mentally more times than I care to admit. Sorry to read your news and admire you for telling. Most guys would have kept that one bottled up Tight.

Once again,,,,why why why can't they have a locking pin on our kick stands. Harley can do it on there 900lb tanks, surly a tiny locking pin cant be that hard to invent for a much lighter bike. One would think the Japanese would be all over that one.

+1 to that. It if anything good came out of the accident, it raises awareness for everyone else. I almost tipped mine off the rear stand a couple weeks ago. The rear hub area seems to be especially vulnerable to levering over and there are some pretty high torque nuts there. Def use a long handle breaker bar and avoid abrupt force. An impact driver would be safest for those nuts that won't break free.

Thanks Romans, and all for support, this is a real low point in my ownership of motorcycles. In aviation we call it "Get Home-itus" it kills many amatuer and a few pro instrument pilots every year. You keep pushing on into bad weather against your better judgement in order get home, sleep in your own bed or see your wife and kids or whatever. It clouds your mind and you make bad decisions. Same thing with working on our bikes, when things start to go wrong and I have a time table to "git her done" I start to rush things and make really dumb decisions. Yesterday what should have been an easy 4 hour job took most of the day and ended up with my bike on the garage floor. When I found the cracked pulser cover and busted the wellnut I should have stopped and shutdown for the day. Bike wasn't going anywhere until I could get more parts anyway. I kept pushing on though until I was in a brain fog. I don't even remeber if I put the kickstand down or not....I may have just forgot, I was that out of it.

That sucks! I've got a clutch lever and some chrome bar ends I can send your way, if you want 'em. Maybe a mirror, and probably any welnuts or bolts you might need... Just lemme know.

There's always a bright side. In this case, it's the reminder to us all to know when to walk away... and that our kickstands suck! Sorry that it came at your expense.

Could you imagine the look on the adjusters face if I called him and let him know the bike hit the deck again? They'd be thinking fraud for sure, probably get dropped or rates through the roof.

Use yer insurance wisely. Already done that. I'd give it a few years if I were ever going to use it again? .......IDK? I wouldn't be calling the ins guy just now. JMHO. You'd honestly be entitled to another settlement but you risk being earmarked --------------a risk -- not a good thing. I don't take a risk unless i stand a very good chance of winning and slim to no chance of loosing. I'd just eat this one, pal.

CRAP CRAP CRAP !!!!

Im sick over it. give everything a few days before you make any big decisions on calling insurance. It sound like with the little damage you have perhaps just covering the bill yourself. If the rates on all you bikes go up the $ might just be a wash.

Hi FR8flyer, not an A7 like in your avatar, that's for sure. Private pilot, sold my single engine Cessna years ago, flying was just getting too expensive. I am North American technical support now for a German company that makes a line of turbodiesel light aircraft engines. Pretty high tech stuff, FADEC controlled with onboard diagnostics. I'm teaching a genfam course on the engines this week here in Big D.

Thanks bean07, I sure hope your right!

At least you didn't damage someone else's bike when yours went down. When my Blackbird rolled off the side stand 7 years ago, it knocked into the next bike over (fairly new Kawasaki Concours). I felt HORRIBLE about damaging someone elses ride. It was at work and I heard it go down after walking away from it. I left a note on his bike and just waited for the owner to show up at my desk and glare at me like the schmuck I was for scratching up his bike. Fortunately, his didn't go down. I couldn't pay him fast enough for his damages, I felt so bad. Oh well, shit happens and no one got hurt.
Life goes on.

Been there... So many times I've regretted not calling it a day. ya get tired but you're stubborn and pay the price. This is not the bike to be dropping. I learned that right from the start but I didn't do it, someone before me did and it snaps the cheap brittle plastic tabs so easily.
This story reminds me of a time when my wife and I were out touring on the bike together and we were both tired from a long day. My bike is set up the same as Privateers and all the bags were chock full, the bike heavy. My wife is a Husker and corn fed so she's no tinker-bell and I'm short and built at 215lbs. Well I was holding the bike up waiting for her to climb aboard when she more or less 'hopped' on and went over the other side as I wrenched on the bars and squeezed the seat trying to hold the bike upright. I swear the bike was leaned at a 45 degree angle and to top that off I have an amputated foot (ball of foot and all toes) on that side to boot ( pun intended). I was growling at her and she quickly explained that her foot had missed the small peg on the other side. I would have thought she was screwing around and making up the story but the three inch long gash on her calf told the truth. I can't believe I held that bike up under all that weight. After that, we made a point to coordinate our mountings especially when we're tired. It's funny to talk about now, but man at the time I was angry to think I could have trashed my bike so easily. Oh, and I also bought some three inch Kuryakin floorboards for the passenger so she couldn't use the peg is too small excuse again!

Thanks to all, At least I don't feel alone here. This whole thing still seems unbelievable. It just doesn't seem possible that I could have had the same bike fall over not once; but twice in the same month after five years of trouble free operation. But that's life, things happen and you just deal with it and move on. I'm still looking for the silver lining in this cloud, if I find it I'll let ya'll know.
