making my own dual exhaust
04/07/12 11:31 PM

Well kinda...I bought the two bros slip ons for the sound factor and the visual appeal (I love the dual look)

Looking to buy a used header off ebay. Options are, buying the 06-07 header with NO cat in the collector (but possibly smaller diameter piping???) or the 08-11 header (larger diameter???), cutting the collector off, gutting the cat and re-welding the collector.

So far, ive read the larger piping on the 08-11 header was used to offset the cat in the collector. Using the supposed larger piping with a gutted cat would provide more gains then the smaller tubing.

So that leads me to the question. Is it worth the time to cut, hack and weld a 08+ header to make an unknown gain in HP over a 06-07 header?

Also, if a 06-07 header is used on a '11 bike, are the exit ports on the header the same for all years? Meaning, will it line up with my 08-11 slip ons?

Im buying a used header instead of the hacking the one on the bike to avoid down time on the bike.

***After all is said and done, a custom tune on the pc5 will be made to take advantage of the the catless system***

Nope. The unknown is you at the throttle cables as if you need to gain one more HP.

Also, if a 06-07 header is used on a '11 bike, are the exit ports on the header the same for all years? Meaning, will it line up with my 08-11 slip ons?
Yep. Like a glove.

So the 06-07 doesn't have a cat in the header?

Correct.

At the collector:

'06 Thru '07 ~ No cat
'08 Thru 0'11 ~ Cat
0'12 Thru 0'? ~ No cat (someone back me up ~ I saw your R video).

as i understand it there is no honeycomb cat in the under-bike plumbing... only in the silencers. There is however a vane
type splitter where the pipe goes from one to two... this item may be coated/ constructed of a catalyst.

hey hub, Why do you say only one hp?

All of the name brand 4-2-1 and even the one 4-2-2 system I saw had gains of 12-15hp. I understand the headers made by these companies are designed to optimize flow and pick up a few more hp.

Using the slip ons already freed up a little hp by removing the cats in the mufflers. Removing the cat in the collector has to be good for a few more hp as well. Couple this with a tune and the number go up again.

Im not expecting a monster gain here but with slip ons, catless header and a custom tune has to make atleast 10whp

Look at this thing, thats a huge restriction

bentz,

That year, they expanded the diameter of the pipe to compensate for the cat clogger. So, it is sort of a mute point about flow. Their brochure also upped the HP by 1 for that cat year also.

I was being facetious about needing more hp, when someone on a 600cc bike is going to smoke you on your 14.

As suggested to my by a member on another forum, he said that all I needed was the gaskets from the 06-07 header to make the mufflers from the 08+ model fit. He was correct but unfortunately the two brother mid pipes are not the same size as the 08+ stock mid pipes.

The gaskets fit perfectly on the header but are too thick for the two bros mid pipes. The muffler pipes do not fit over the gaskets. The muffler pipes themselves fit over the header but they are not snug.

i believe these gaskets are called "graphite exhaust gaskets". Guess ill have to find one that will fit which will probably be a huge hassle. Do you guys think something like this would work? wrap it around the outlet a few times until I get a good fit?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MRG-5961/

I have some down time with the bike now b.c im sending the header and mid pipes out for ceramic coating.

Go to some electronics house, find thin heat shields in sheets. Cut them around and around until the gap fills. Spiral the thin stuff, or see if exhaust wrap can be stuffed in there with one wrap meeting at the fold around?

I think the dei exahust wrap and lots of rtv black sealant is the route to go if I cant find a graphite gasket that will fit

Why not just pay $20 or so for an exhaust shop to flare it to suit the mid pipes ????

Thanks for the suggestions. Im going to try this thin aluminum sheet I found at home depot. I should be able to wrap it around the header outlet enough times and make a nice snug fit for the mid pipe to rest on. Ill update after the pipes get back from ceramic

A couple years back I started a thread, complete with photos, showing how to do what you are trying to do. I'll have to see if I can find it.
As I recall I removed the cat AND the partition in there, completely. Also added a bung for O2 sensor for self tune.
I'd say the gain would be equivalent to a "full system" aftermarket. They're all different but you WILL feel the difference.
However the real difference, as Hub so poetically put it, is how you twist your wrist.
Personally, and I'm not sure why, I'm always in a hurry to get to the next stop sign, or to get stuck behind an RV or SUV or a Hardly or a Suzuki! Dang that made me want a fix. Gotta go do a couple laps...

You have to be careful having an exhaust shop stretch it. They could split it then it will be a bigger problem, or you could cut them off at the flair and have an adapter made and welded in so it would fit with the gaskets like it's supposed to. I made a set from scratch you can see on the green and black bike in the the lowered 14 thread. I will see if I have a pic of them off to post here.

There are a few sizes of the gaskets for different diameters of aftermarket midpipe. No need to stretch anything!

Headers and mid pipes back from ceramic coating. So im running a catless setup with two brothers cans on a 2011. I have a pc5 on the way thats actually loaded with brocks street map already. Ill be running that for the time being until I get to the dyno and have a custom tune.

Still debating on getting guhls flash first before I do the custom tune.

Yep. Like a glove.

Actually it doesn't. I own a 2011, yet was just suckered into buying slip ons off of an 06/07. When I tried to install them I found that the diameter on the slip on midpipe is too small and will not attach to my header. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how I could make it work, as now I can't get a hold of the guy. I'm thinking of some sort of coupler...

You can buy an 06-07 header and it will fit your 2011 but I recommend a new exhaust gasket and put the 06-07 slip-on's you bought on that header so now you have a full exhaust with no catalytic converter in the mid pipe so now that you have a full exhaust your fuel mapping will be off so you will also need a power commander and have it tuned or you can buy slip-on’s for an 08-11 and sell the ones you bought!
