Mystery Cowl Pad
03/07/11 10:58 AM

This thing was lying on my garage floor after I pulled cowlings on my '06 ZX-14, must have been somewhere on the engine but darned if I can figure out where. It's black foam rubber, crispy, almost carbonized so it must have been up against the engine or other hot component. The mystery pad is about 6 inches long, 2 inches wide and about 3/4 inch thick. Rook, you have your cowls off, does it look like anything under the hood on yours? Anyone else recognize it?

Is that the padding on that sits between the coolant resevoir and the fairing?

Does not look like either of the two 1" thick pads I have in my fairings. Could it be that this is one of those things that was changed from the gen 1 to the gen 2? By the size of the hole, it looks like it would be the pad in the lower fairing on the clutch lever/sprocket side of the bike. The hole goes around a radiator hose.

Anyone with a gen 1 know if you have that thing pictured above?

Here's what i have in 1" thick fairing pads on my gen 2. one goes on water pump where radiator hose connects, other goes on coolant reservoir bottle.

Not me... been too long since I parted my '06. Hope to get started on tearing down my '08 by weeks end. If I come across that pad, I'll let you know.

It appears to be the lower half of 39156, must have broken in the center of the big hole. It's marked '06 only but where does it fit and what does it do? '06/'07 guys with your cowlings off, can you see something that looks like 39156...except maybe intact?

39156-right side of bike.Goes ONTO the radiator hose and down across the fairing to keep it from contacting the engine case under there. The half-moon shape is actually the half of the hole that goes over the hose.Yours is...missing the top longish piece. The "hole" actually has a small cut in it so it can be "opened" up to fit over the rad hose. That part's gone. You should also have a blockish piece of thick foam(a rectangular shaped one..39156J).That connects to the belly fairing inside and rides against the engine case as well....glues on the fairing in there.Your old fairing....you should be able to see where it was stuck on there from the factory(right around that convex small "bump" in the belly fairing)(or...it may STILL be connected to that damaged fairing). Then you can just tape it on there, and it will stay once the fairing is back in place. You need to watch as you move the fairing(s) around for install that those pieces don't slide or move from where they're sitting.Get your tabs connected, then move the fairings straight in,watching those foam deals. There's that smaller one as well...39150...that also opens up and goes over your rad hose in there on the right side.Adjust em with yer hands or a screwdriver to get em just at the right spots. Then secure your well nuts.If your fairing is contacting the engine case, the foam spacers are not correctly sitting in there.

Rookster...ahem.....you are showing the two LEFT HAND foam pads. Those BOTH go on the left side. One over the coolant bottle, the other(with the teensy hole)goes along the rearmost/lowest fairing portion and the drain line goes through that hole. The cutout goes into the radiator line.

yap--talkin to Kruz now and we have figured that out looking at pics of my bike stripped down. I'm going to have to go back and do some editting. you always catch me on these things, blue.

I see the foam piece is labeled 39156 ('06)

ok, does that mean this pad is only on the '06?

.......and does that mean it is not necessary if it was omitted from 07 onward?

Yes...it means something's different.I don't remember seeing on my 07 that second right side piece, the kinda triangular smaller one with the "hole" in it.Maybe it is on mine....I'll check next time I pull my fairing off.Could of sworn my 07 has only two on that right side. That square piece, and that bigger one.

"does it mean it's not necessary"....well...IDK.MAYBE there was a small design change in the fairing shape.Might wanna check in there as you install that fairing...see if it's gonna rub anywhere along the engine case. These may also double as a "hot wind cover" of sorts. Not like the ones they show in the diagrams..but still,a way of directing the airflow as well as saving the fairing from melting.

I am quite certain those are the only two I have. ALL fairings off now incl. top and front fender. All pads removed and I only have those two picced in my post above.

RE: Mystery Cowl Pad

If those two are the only ones you have...yer missing the right side set(s).I wouldn't try riding without those...might get a serious surprise when you look down where yer puttin yer right foot.Did you check your hoses on the right side? That's where they'd be attached to.(except that square one...that's on the belly fairing).I know one of those bigger ones rides under that midfairing at the "belly/midfairing" seam.Down over the tip of the Pulsar cover there on top. That other one rides across the engine case there, attaching to the rad hose.In the back of your manual...in the APPENDIX...you'll find the diagrams of the "hose configurations"....the placements of all the foam pads are right in there somewhere.Very clear.Good Luck!

Maybe mine DOES have three on that right side..hmmmmm....probably.Whatever is supposed to be in there...it's in there.I'm pretty good at reinstalling stuff(usually)LOL!

Ya..okay...mine does have three on the right side.Yes.The bigger long one goes "up top" kinda...the longish tip going over the top of the pulsar cover and down. That smaller triangular one is attached to the rad hose under the fairing. That square block is attached right about at that convex bump on the belly fairing, keeping the fairing from contacting the engine case.

Tell ya the truth...I'm "kinda" like that shmoe in "flight of the phoenix"...that guy that "designed" that plane to fly outta there....you know...his only REAL experience was.................assembling MODEL airplanes!Yep...that'd be me.Used to spend HOURS building and painting my model Helicopters and planes...when I was a wee lad.

Just found #3 onm the right hand side located on rad hose. Looks a lot like Kruz's mystery part but no thin strip on top and bottom. I'll post a pic soon.

I'm a real dipchit today, blue. Thanks for correcting me.

Glad ya found that little puppy.I don't really mean to correct ya...you know....just wanted to save ya from maybe damaging your fairings.I really don't know shi^ about these bikes.I'm just playin it by ear.
Guess I've been REALLY lucky so far...of all the times I've worked on my bike...plenty...I've never come away with anything left over.To me...that's kinda amazing!

Kruz. Look at p 17-12 Appendix in SERVICE MANUAL. There's your pad on the bott0om of page--location and how to install. " Fit the groove of the pad to the radiator hose, and fix the pad by the middle fairing."

I can't copy off a PDF but here's a screen shot for you. Just as good. My SM is for 06. Never got a hold of an 08-present.

I don't have that part on my bike. My right pad is similar. NO PAD DOWN BY THE BELLY PAN< BLUE WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? never saw that in my life and I'm sure of it. See nothing in the SM about that one.

The plot thickens. .....and I'm getting really a little corn-fused here again. Do I risk jacking Kruz' thread or do I start a second one??

OK--I'm jackin' Can't see starting a whole new thread if Kruz's pad mystery has been solved.

Here's what I am wondering:
How many 1" pads you got on your gen 2. I have 3. If any are missing, they must be replaced immediately. Heree's what i have and they are shown same position as found on bike as viewed from behind.

My bike is an '09

Here you can see the location of the pad around the coolant reservoir, I have it taped to hold it in place

Here you can see both foam pads on the left, the top one is easy to see because of the masking tape, the lower one is by the left case cover.

There is only one on the right side, see the masking tape holding it in place.

Thank you so much Runnerhiker. All the mysteries of the fairing pads are now revealed.....except for why does blue07 have more pads than any of the rest of us?

There are some things

.....we may never know the answer to.

See your pic there Rook...of your 3 pads.Okay...that one on the right. That goes where Runnerhiker showed in his right side pic....up by the Pulsar cover(that little tip goes down on the cover). So you have that one.NOW....number 2 is....tada!INSIDE THE BELLY FAIRING.It's there alright.Squarish and thick.Fastens onto the belly fairing with factory stickyback tape. It's stuck on the fairing. If it comes out(which they can after repeated heat cycles),it's a good chance it'll dislodge and make it's way out the back of that fairing...and...BYE BYE.Could be where yours went.It should be stuck to the fairing. If it's cooked well, like Kruz's one piece there,it's gonna probably shrink some, and then...BYE BYE.May get stuck somewhere in the engine case, lower area maybe. It's not jammed in there is it?Here ya go Rook.......39156J...

Yes...the one I circled is the same one you have Rook..and the same one I have. And the same as runnerhiker. That's what they're showing. The 06 has the longish tips on it.So you(we)are okay...nothing wrong.Find that lower one yet Rookster?

That diagram of the placements..yes... an 06.07's have the other pad showing.

yup. got the little cube of foam adhered to inside of right lower. That's a soft piece of foam like all the stick on foam inside.

Yes...the one I circled is the same one you have Rook..and the same one I have. And the same as runnerhiker. That's what they're showing.
looks like its labeled 39156Q except they drew it upside down if you compare to runnerhiker's pic which is installed same way as mine was and I'm sure always has been.

Hey, we're all good. I'm okay, you're okay. Thanks, blue.

You know, I have this funny feeling that we had this exact discussion about fairing pads back in 08. Hard to say if I'm imagining that or not.

Halleluyah! Problem of the mystery pad is finally solved, Runnerhikers rightside photo clearly shows where my pad came from, directly above the pulser cover and the hole was there for the radiator hose. This also helps clear up another mystery and that is the extra pad that I received in my parts shipment but could not find the part number on my original order. It is not listed as an elgible part for the '06 but it is the exact one shown on Runnerhikers '09 and apparently supercedes the older part number 39156 from '06 (that disintegrated on my bike.) I ordered a 39156 and they sent me the update part which appears to be more robust, i.e. over 1 inch thick versus maybe 3/4 inch thick.
