How to remove thread lock.
02/02/10 8:22 PM

I'd like to get the left over thread lock out of the holes for the rotor bolts before taking the wheels to the powdercoater.
It's easy enough to remove from the bolts but how do you get at least some of it out of the holes?
If some is still in there do you think the high temps of the powdercoat process will make it brittle and easily chip out/push out when installing the bolts or could it make it harder and screw up the threads?
The threadlock from the factory is still somewhat pliable but sticks to the threads. I don't have a small enough wire reamer or anything to get in there. Probably not good to put some kind of wire brush in there anyway as it might help corrosion set in by scratching the surface.
Must be some spray that melts it out or? I had the same problem when I mounted my frame sliders. I just cleaned as much as I could but I KNOW the threads weren't clean.
I don't know how much the threadlock properties are compromised by installing a clean bolt into a hole that isn't. Since these are for the rotors you don't want them loosening up.
Last, since various thread lockers have different strengths, "medium strength" should work? I learned in the past that you can't just go by the color(red, blue, etc). Example, I believe "Loc-tite" brand in red is for high strength applications and I think too much for rotor bolts(?) However, "Hondaline" in red is rated medium strength and I think good to use in this case.
The factory threadlock looks red to me though it also looks kind of orange.
Any help appreciated on how to clean and what to use for re-install.

may be a dumg question but why do you need to clean out the thread lock? do they not prep the wheels before powdercoating anyways? i would think it would be the same prep as chrome which would be an acid bath...i dunno just curious

Thanks for the replies.
Scottjkyl, you're probably right. Seems that when they first strip off the stock silver finish the holes should get cleaned out in the process. I can ask the shop if I need to do anything.
Anyone...how about the right threadlock to install the rotor bolts? A "medium" strength sound good?

This is pricy but I think they make it in smaller quantities. Made to do exactly what you want if the WD40 doesn't. What is also cool is that it is NITROMETHANE!

I've never used red locktight because I always heard, "blue only." I wouldn't want to have a problem removing later on. Seems like it could be a problem with high torque bolts.
