What is your camera of choice to photograph motorcycles?

.
What is your camera of choice to photograph motorcycles? How do you take pictures of your bike?

Although taking digital photographs is easy, sometimes the end result can be a photobomb. Today, I am spending this dreary Sunday morning editing pictures (I use Adobe Photoshop Elements for editing) from yesterday's 37th Annual Kawasaki Team Green Motocross event.

Most of the times I use a compact Sony Cybershot DSC-W530 digital camera to take my pics.

Occasionally and depending on the situation I use my old Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 35mm SLR film camera, a 400mm telephoto lens, a Tamron 35-70mm zoom lens, and my 25 year's old trusty Slik tripod. (My camera equipment has lasted longer than my marriage.)

We love taking pictures of OUR BIKES, tell us what is your camera of choice. Please include a motorcycle photo taken with your preferred camera.

Disclaimer: I am not a prude by any means, but please refrain from posting naked or erotic women pictures.

Nice still, Kolfa! What museum is that?

To answer the question, it depends. I speak as a pro photographer, who has set the camera aside for now. I've a 40 year career / love affair with cameras and photography. I've even produced my own photo chemistries from scratch, and produced my own platnium printing paper. I've used everything from a Minox, to a 4x5 view camera, with a 4x5 color dicho head on my Beseler enlarger (for custom color enlarging / printing). I was very well set up...

So: If I'm going for "action" photography, I like a modern, late model, digital SLR with very fast lenses and extremely fast "finger-to-shutter" release. This is the primary downfall of the modern "point 'n shoots".

If it's not "action", then I'll grab something that has a charged battery and go... ie: if it's still, not moving, in one place, then it dont matter to me what I use, just "get some".

A bit more about "action" photos: Tho I use an extremely fast "finger-to-shutter" to get the precise timing instant of the shot, I actuall employ long shutter times, on the order of 1/8 to 1/15th of a second, and "pan" with the action, for "crisp" cycle focus, and blurred background, to denote movement.

If I'm *really* enthustastic about the action, I'll use film, a "slit" type shutter with two curtains, and some shutter time around 1/5 to 1/10. This, when done well, "stretches" the wheels diagonally, on a 45 deg plane. It looks teriffic in the print. I got this from an old "TIME magazine" photo book series, that described how the shot was made (~1930's era photo).

Thanks! I don't like to use my GoPro to take pictures. The images look ok, but in my opinion there is significant fisheye distortion from the 170 degree lens.

Cute cat!

Nice still, Kolfa! What museum is that?

Bob, this is the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Excellent explanation Bob, thanks! Back in 1988 when I bought my Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 35mm SLR film camera, it was intended to be used for racing "action" shots. It is the reason I bought the 400mm telephoto lens. But learning to use a manual SLR camera is an art, and it takes a lot of practice and dedication. It also takes a lot of patience, which I didn't have.

Bobby, I am not a camera expert, still trying to learn about them myself, but you can purchase a nice point and shoot at a reasonable price. About two years ago I paid about $100.00 for my Sony Cybershot DSC-W530. But my images don't compare, they are not even close to the ones taken by Werks on THIS THREAD. He used a Sony Cybershot DSC-TX10.
