Power Commander Trouble
07/02/10 4:22 PM

Spent the better part of the day getting the new PowerCommander III USB and TRE on my 10R. Cranked her up and was letting her warm up, plugged in my laptop to the USB cable and was setting the idle speed, everything working great, set my lower throttle point....bammmm engine quit and would not crank. I tried for 5 minutes, not a pop. Called Ivan and he suggested going back in an unplugging the PCIII and going back to stock. Everything back apart, reconnect original cables and she cranks right back up. A call to PowerCommander Technical Support and their only suggestion was possibly a bad ground on the PCIII, they calimed these things almost never fail. You cannot ground to the battery with this setup, the ground cable is about 8 inches too short to make it there. I grounded to the subframe where the fuel tank aft mount attaches..solid ground, I don't think that's it. Anyway, I'm done for the day, shot the entire day and I'm back to stock. To say I'm pissed is understatement. Anyone else had these issues?

I did not use the battery to ground my PCV. I believe the instructions for the Zx-14 recommend the screw on the overflow bottle for the rad fluid. I did not use that either because people have had probs with that losing ground and also overtightening cracking the bottle.

I used this screw on the left (sprocket) side of the 14. Blue recommended it and it has been working for him for quite a while. The threads of the hole are unpainted so there should be good contact but I filed the paint off the raised bit of metal where this screw goes into the frame to be doubly sure. Maybe your 10 has something like this. Hope it works out. What a PITA.

My friend Nate at the Bikeshack in Bozeman,Mt will tell you different. He has seen a few problems with PCIII's.And he is also friends with the guys down the road in Belgrade,Mt where Dynojet is.I would see if they would trade you for a new one.

We'll I'm pretty sure I found the problem. Dyno Jet instructed grounding back to the battery in their installation manual but supplied a ground wire that was ten inches to short to accomplish that mission so I went to the closest spot that looked like a solid ground and that was the subframe. I had grounded the PCIII to the subframe with one of the 8mm bolts that anchors the aft tank mount. The problem is, the subframe is hard anodized, i.e. non-conductive and bolted to the main frame with four bolts that are slathered in locktite i.e. another non-conductor. To be perfectly honest, I didn't realize all this at the time as I was under a time crunch to get 'er done. Bottom line, I had a return path resistance of 3.5 ohms. 3 mili-ohms(.003 ohm) is considered a normal maximum so I had over one thousand times more resistance than recommended, not good for voltage sensitive electronics. I will plug everything back in after work and see how she runs. I'm curious to see what Ivan's map is going to do for this thing.

You can see how short the ground wire on the PCIII was, not even close to grounding to the battery negative terminal. I fabricated a 10 inch long, 16 gauge jumper with ring terminals, double crimped then soldered (I'm not taking any chances here) and used the 8mm bolt at the aft tank mounting plate to tie everything together. Resistance is now 0 ohms back to the battery ground terminal measured within the resolution of my multimeter. You guys doing a Power Commander installation or having issues might want to do something similar. I have had the ground cable on my ZX-14 Power Commander grounded at the coolant recovery tank now for 4 years now with no issues but if I ever have a problem, the first thing I'll do is run one of these jumpers back to the battery negative terminal.

The ground cable was the problem, I put everything back together and she cranked right up. I'll be way more careful in the future when choosing a ground location.
