Can plugging the fresh air system make it run richer?
08/21/10 10:09 AM

I plugged the hose going to the air chamber to lessen the decel' popping. It helped some.
Now I noticed the gas mileage drop a couple mpg. I'm pretty certain nothing else is wrong.
The fresh air system only effects the already spent gases, correct?? So the ratio of gas into the cylinders shouldn't be changed?
The bike seems to idle a bit uneven too. Awhile back I had a similar issue caused by filling the tank too high. I lost a good 5 mpg and the idle was even more choppy/uneven and much more obvious. I shot some air into the hose under the seat and that cleared the system of about a tablespoon of fuel and the bike ran fine. I tried that this time and almost nothing came out.
So I'm wondering is plugging the hose can cause problems too. I know many owners have plugged that hose. Any help appreciated.

I was concerned that blocking the PAIR would cause the bike to run leaner but I was assured that the increase in pressure within the airbox caused by blocking the clean air hose was insignificant. I don't see that the bike should run richer either.

As far as idling uneven, have been talking to another member about that and he claims that his 14 and his 10 both have a gentle off balance rhythm at idle as does my 14 and my busa. What you are hearing is prolly normal if it sounds like the exhaust pulse rhythm varies at idle.

Thanks for the reply Rook.
So you also plugged the hose but notice no loss of mpg? I suppose I could be wrong about the idle sounding a bit "off" but I can't explain the loss of mileage.

Wish I would have paid more attention to fuel mileage before the blockoff. I couldn't say if there has been an increase in fuel consumption. I'm pretty sure I would not notice a slight increase such as you mentioned unless I was keeping a watch on the mileage/tank or the current fuel use gauge (which is somewhat optimistic, I am told). I'll bet the fuel monitoring functions on the multifunc meter are even less accurate after you remap or tune.

I suppose you are caculating gas use by filling the tank and then subtracting what you put in next fill to show fuel consumption/miles on the odo? I could see that varying by 5 mpg just because it us such a small tank and filling a little higher or lower will make a dif.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I go by how much fuel I put in and the trip meter amount. Lately I'm in the habit of sticking my finger in the tank as a dip stick. Bit of a hassle but I don't over-fill anymore (happened twice). Seems like I'm putting in very close to the same amount every time. The mpg isn't the biggest problem in the world but has me wondering.
When the bike was new/newer the trip would read about 160 when the "fuel empty" started flashing. The bike would take about 4.7 gallon each time, then hit reserve. This went on for several months and I could almost guess when the fuel empty would start flashing. Very consistant mileage just like my 30 year old bike. This was all commuting to work/riding the same way all week.
Then for whatever reason, the fuel empty started flashing sooner, right about 4.2 gallons used. Mileage stayed the same, about 34, but "reserve" was now at 4.2 used. Who knows.
So I started getting about 140/142 and the fuel empty would flash (about the last 2 years). Since I had the bike all apart to coat the header and change coolant, etc, I thought I'd plug that hose to see if it helped stop the decel' popping. Now the mileage seems to have dropped a little as I said. Maybe it's nothing as you say and I could have put less gas in. It's only been through about 3 or 4 tanks since I got it back together. We'll see.

May I suggest this?....The change in air density due to environmental change.Air temp, things like that. You could do this.Reset the "avg.mpg" on your next ride.Ride as always.See what you get.If it goes back to where it was,or VERY close, then I'd say it's the atmospheric conditions.Mine will change quite noticeably....not mpg's so much, but definitely 10ths of a mpg.We had a brisk cool spell here for around two days.I rode as always.I noticed she had significantly dropped from the previous "warmer" ride.Whenever she stops "adjusting" while riding...for any long period...like days...I reset my avg.mpg. again while running(moving).I think sometimes the memory function kinda goes on vacation.I always fill mine past the filler neck.(but not to overflowing).I do not have the California model...no fuel canister.
