20,000 miles is it time for another one?
08/21/10 10:36 AM

Hey all, my 14 just rolled over 20k miles, has been a trouble free bike.

Basically, I'm trying to decide whether I should sell her and buy another with low miles, or put some money into her for another couple of years riding.

Right now, her suspension is basically, shot, so am looking at around $700.00 to re-valve and spring.
I have some pulsing from time to time coming from the front brake, but I think that could probably be handled with some sanding, but could require replacement rotors on the front.

She still runs like a raped ape, transmission feels pretty good, but a little vague when going into second and third.
The bike has a nice full muzzy exhaust and power commander. Chain/sprockets are original, but appear to have some life left.

I have seen bikes out there with very low miles for around 7000 to 7500 and they are very tempting. I doubt I could fetch much more than $5000.00 for mine and she is in pristine condition.

What are your thoughts? Put a little money into her or dump her cheap? Is 20k miles too many miles?

Money is tight ;)

I'd just spend a little coin on her and ride her for another 40,000+ miles! IMHO

I'd keep the bike because it's been trouble-free and you know its history.

20,000 miles is nothing for a modern water cooled sportbike engine, especially the big bores. I have a friend that regularly puts 100,000 on ALL his big bores of all brands, he rides them very hard (but maintains them well) and has never had an engine failure yet....EVER. He's sold every one of his bikes still running strong I know/hear of many high mileage sportbikes running fine. I don't know why so many folks think that bike engines are shot at such low mileage? They're not made out of butter lol.

Here's a guy from STN on a '00 GSXR750...and I am sure he added many miles since this pic. Keeps going and going. Many bikes are getting high miles with proper care. A lot of big bore bikes like XX, FJR are also documented as going well past the 200,000 mile mark. I am sure a properly cared for ZX14 will as well. Most people just crash them or don't keep or ride them long enough.

+1 Money in the bank. If you're willing to go 2000-2500 into the red on a new bike, I'd say spend that on some Ohlins suspensions and call it a new bike. If it's running great 20K miles, I would feel more confident about that than any bike at 2000 miles. Low miles is good in one respect but it does not guaranty a trouble free future.

but a little vague when going into second and third.

What do you mean, "vague?" I guess that description is a little unclear lol I feel a clunk when 2nd goes in but that is only if I use crappy oil. Don't waste money on GN4.

You might consider the EVO Shift Star Kit. It does great things for your shifting. -bg

Thanks for the reassurances! With some suspension work, I'm sure this bike will last me quite some time.
Just put on two new shoes on her, went two up with the wife on her down one of our local canyons. I feel like a schmuck for having suggested trading for a newer one ;)

Yeah, traitor! Your bike heard that so now you're sunk!!

Just kidding. Definitely keep her for at least 100k miles. That's the plan for mine. I just turned over 5000 miles and I bought mine last December. Love my bike.

I see your point from what you listed you are in for 1400 bucks that’s a lot of money for a bike that you say is only worth 5k.

^^......but he'll probably be spending a little more even for a new(er) one. Get the superior aftermarket stuff on there and use it. Only reason to go with a new bike is if you want something different, IMHO.
