Help me out here guys...
12/15/09 8:27 PM

I've got an '06 ZX14...and when I bought it, there was no owner's manual. I figured this might be a decent topic for discussion for some of you guys.

I have only been able to put around 20 miles on it so far, give or take, due to the weather, but the night I got it (30 degrees outside) I rode it to the gas station and topped it off with premium, of course. Well, when i got back on the bike and headed home, next to the gas range display (miles to empty) on the screen it said "over"...what does this mean??? Does it mean it's over filled? I've ridden probably 10-15 miles or so since the fillup, and it's still on. It would be awesome if I had the manual to refer to, and I have one ordered, but it won't be here until Friday or so...and it's driving me crazy wondering what that means. I plan to ride the devil out of it once I get some days without rain, but it seems as if now that I have something I want to do outside, it just keeps raining and raining...then if it's dry, it's colder than a witch's tit outside. Guy can't get a break haha.

So if one of you guys can help me out that would be awesome! I don't want to sound like I'm an idiot or something that doesn't know what he's talking about...but at this point when it comes to the display, I don't haha!

I really appreciate it guys. This is an awesome forum, and I'm looking forward to many stories I'll be able to share on here...just need to get us some weather so we can heat up the roads. Y'all have a good one, and thanks again!

Matt

I haven't reset them, but I didn't think there was really a need to. I just saw the "over" on there and I knew it wasn't there on the way to the gas station, it didn't come on until I filled up. I'll be doing some pretty serious studying on the bike, I'm on here every night looking at stuff that interests me and that could help me in the very near to distant future. There are several things I'd like to ask about the bike and everyone else's personal experience/knowledge, but I'm going to ask them one at a time so I don't create a huge, long, and drawn out thread haha.

"over", if i remember correctly, refers to your range.

sometimes it does that directly after you fill up. Give it a few gooses on the throttle and it should go away (your instant MPG will go down affecting your range).

Nothin to worry about. I'd just change the screen over to instant or average MPGs. Kinda fun to watch your instant go way down when you throttle it, then spike when you decelerate.

Oh wait... Just remember to watch the road. Even though the gas gauge is entertaining. LOL

Welcome Matt,

That warning is a new one on me! I top off mine all the way up to the hose receiver gate. I may have hit it a few times up and out into the filler neck, but I've never seen the display, "OVER" on the largest part of the dash screen, right? Are the letters pretty large? Take a picture if you can. Now I feel like hooking the float arm full lock, see if I can force that to read on the display. Gotta be a reason for that...

Do you remember where you topped off the fuel level? Since it took a little gas from the station and then finally home, could you go out to the garage, sit on the bike, grab a front brake and pump the front end up and down? Then, swish the bike side to side between your legs a few times, work that gas bumping that float loose. Turn the key on, see what happens to the display now?

Nowhere does it say anything about that hidden 'over fill' flash in the manual or a quick look in the FSM. But it sure is one more cool thing about this bike. What will happen in the overfilled tank scenario is to tell you if you overfill that tank, she will expand [gas] on a hot day, run down the emissions canister, fill that puppy up, cause the fuel to dump into the engine, run a little sluggish until that finally clears up. She has so many tricks up her sleeve, a tiny chip as big as pulling some honker out of your nose, will someday be the size of that ECU snotting up the works.

If this bike was a used sitter or say you let the bike sit for 60 ~ 90 days or more, she starts to slowly gum up things. Sta-Bil poured in the tank, sloshed around, then ridden enough to run Sta-Bil thru the injectors for storage, might not lock a float arm to where it moves in the gummy part. I'm guessing. Seeing that you topped it off enough to slosh the float to the point of somehow making that arm stick.

Wait for a dry day, throw some miles on it. See what happens, short of pulling the fuel pump to see if that arm is stuck on?

Huh- never saw the "over" message but then again, I always keep my multifunc on current mileage. Seems to me if you are over your range, you are past empty -- no? Why would it tell you you are over if you have too much gas?

If you are really over full, excess gas will vent out of the fuel overflow tube down by the shift lever. This will happen if you fill it way up and then park it with a hot engine. I usually fill mine to just under the splash guard. I go over the splash guard if I will be drawing the tank down right away with a long ride immediately after the fill up.

Too much gas sitting for long periods might not be the best thing for the rubber seal on the gas cap. Possibly not the greatest for paint around filler hole either.

Wow, man - you stumped Hub!

Slow Ninja's right close on target. If yer in the LCD screen displaying "range"-it will register "over"because it hasn't been able to calculate your present range with a completely full tank-until ya ride it a bit and use some fuel.It will not display this message as Rook said if you're in the "avg.mileage, instant mileage"LCD screen display.Fill er up and ENJOY!!!

Hub-it's in the owner's manual-it doesn't mean "over filled".It means that according to the last info from the ecu,the fuel in the tank has not yet been calibrated(for the previous registered mileage). As far as the filling on a hot day-it will expand-but not into the engine. What you'll have is a very NICE BIG puddle of fuel running UNDERNEATH your lovely motorcycle-just waiting for a little spark! If it does that(overflows)-best to back the bike away from the puddle, and check down below where the overflow tube is at(for Matt-on the left side below the belly fairing at the shift arm)BEFORE YOU START HER UP,and MAKE SURE you don't have any fuel spilling onto your headers there.(course I'm speaking about the NON-CALIFORNIA MODEL here)There is no canister on these babys(non -Cali's)I ALWAYS fill mine up INTO the filler neck-move the bike up and back a smidgin, then keep filling until she's full to just about a 1/2 inch from the very top of the filler tube(room enough to allow the cap to close without shooting fuel out the overflow).Nice to see "full" on the bars-and 70 miles later, still reading "full"

This is interesting, because I rode the first three or four tanks of gas in Average MPG mode, before deciding Range would be a more useful display. Besides I could care less what the MPG is, frankly. If I want good MPG I'll buy a Rebel.

Anyway, I'm assuming by the time I switched over to Range the ecu had already "calibrated" the fuel consumption enough to estimate Range. And I find it does a pretty good job. Though when the gas pump icon starts flashing and taking over the entire display, I start to worry.

Blue Says: Hub-it's in the owner's manual-it doesn't mean "over filled".It means that according to the last info from the ecu,the fuel in the tank has not yet been calibrated(for the previous registered mileage)

Page 58 and 59 in your owner's manual. Between the lines or between the pages, "OVER" to me reads what happens if you overfill the air bubble. The tank needs to breath. Remember all the "Noise/Whistles from my tank" threads?

You got me curious now. I'm changing the screen till I read "OVER" blinking at me or holding still. Zero out my "A" mileage meter and wait.

I'd say MATT emptied 15 miles worth of that reminder turning off about now. Especially if he opened the throttle a few times during that stint.

What I'm curious about is how that tank is not shutting off the overfilled lamp by now. The only moving part I can think of in that tank is that float arm. Bottom line, do we have a mechanical problem at the arm?

WOW!! Thanks for all of your replies. It makes sense that the bike hasn't had time to calculate the new fuel in the tank, becuase when I bought the bike it was almost empty and then I filled it and did the sloshing/rocking to take all of the extra room, and then got it within about a half-inch of the splash guard. I have probably ridden it 10-15 miles since the fillup, and about 8 of them were wet road miles so I didn't punch on it. The range actually hasn't decreased since I filled up, so you can tell I've been babying it for the most part. There was no puddle under it, and no gas smell after it's turned off or anything, so I'm sure it's not running over anywhere...I guess it was just a shock to the computer for it to go from hardly any gas to hardly any breathing room haha. I'm going to reset the average mileage today, and start the trip meters over just so I can tell how the bike is doing with my riding habits and I'll actually know how far I've ridden compared to what the range tells me.

It's going to be sunny for a few days now, so I'm going to break her out and try to use at least 1/4 tank this afternoon. I have lots of people that are wanting to see the new beast, so I've got a good bit of riding to do haha. I absolutely love the bike, it's by far the most amazing machine I've ever owned. I just can't wait to be able to really learn the nature of the beast so I can really know what I'm talking about when I'm asking questions.

Again, thanks a lot guys for jumping in and helping me. I've got an owner's manual ordered and it should be here in a couple of days...so that should take care of a lot of my questions I'll probably have.

Y'all have a good one!
Matt

I always keep mine on the miles left setting. I don't want to know what my MPG is. It's always giong way down then way up then way down....WFO syndrom.
I never completely fill the tank either. I want to keep the weight down in case that guy with the Busa ever comes up next to me at a stop light. I even remove all the change from my pocket before I ride.

There's nothin wrong with the fuel arm!!! GOOD ONE BAD-that's the Spirit!!!...and Hub-there IS NO air bubble ya bubblehead! There's an overflow tube to discourage that kind of behavior!

Yer NOT supposed to SEAL the breathing ends!!! Please tell me you aren't running another experiment trying to find out if she'll blow?!We need ALL our members here BRO!!!!Besides-didn't you read in the owner's manual-"purposely plugging the fuel tank overflow relief line will void your warranty-Kawasaki will not pay for hospital bills OR an incinerated motorcycle due to end-user stupidity"-it says so-right in there! And that other warning-"anyone stupid enough to block the fuel tank overflow vent line should IMMEDIATELY drive(carefully)to their nearest Kawasaki Motorcycle Dealer and hand the Service rep their ignition keys. This is the only allowed exception to operating the motorcycle with the fuel overflow line plugged."

RE: Help me out here guys...

Well, I rode her tonight, and she continues to impress me more and more every time I get on. I reset the trip, and average mileage before I left the garage. When I first started riding, the range was fluctuating a LOT because it was trying to figure out how much of a twist I was going to keep on the throttle. I probably went around 15 miles or so, and then the "over" light went off and the range started to level off a little more before I came home. I wasn't able to get the full 1/4 tank out that I planned though, it was just too darn cold...and it was dark, so that didn't make it any more fun or pleasant.

But I was able to play with it more, and that joker's awesome. So far, from what I've been able to tell, my bike has the following aftermarket items: full Muzzy M10, Dynojet PCIII (getting re-mapped this weekend), flies removed, different rear sprocket (not sure of tooth count), all badges have been removed and it's got Chromed factory wheels...I guess I oughta post some pics for you guys!

I'm getting it re-mapped because when riding steady in any gear around 2750-3200 rpm it has a studder and seems to run a little "rough". If a little more throttle is applied to get it closer to 3500 and beyond, it's smooth as can be. It has the typical 3500rpm backfire on decel (which is awesome at night) all other rpms are fine. I'm just going to let the local Kawi dealer check it out to see if they can play with the map and improve anything, they're big fans of the 14s, and most of them have one at home. It's also got the switch on the handlebar to change between two modes on the PCIII...going to see if I can get that working right again too.

Didn't meant to write a book guys...this is just an awesome new experience for me because I've never had a bike that has this much potential and such a huge aftermarket. I was always a cruiser guy (big bore of course) but now that I'm on the 14, I'm not sure I'll be going back anytime soon haha. Thanks again for y'alls help! Any other tips you might have for me are always of course VERY appreciated.

Thanks!
~Matt

And there you go. Another bulletproof 14 without any gummy, sitting around kind of problems in the tank. Normal functions working correctly is all I can say.

Matt, I'd learn how to save that map onto my computer for a backup map. Keep it or change back to it for summer use or whatever runs in the cold you are about to change, will not run to well on warmer days like you are experiencing now with the one you are using.
