PROBLEMS!!
03/26/13 4:47 PM

Brand new to the ZX 14 world and I have a bike with what seems to be major issues. Ill describe all I know so if any of you will read all of this and have any suggestions I will be greatly appreciative.

I came across a 2007 ZX 14 with 9000K on the clock, it had been sitting for apprx 2 yrs in the back room of a house. Battery was dead so I put a new battery in and amazingly it fired up immediately. It seemed to be running a little rough but im new to the sport bike arena and considering it had been sitting I thought it ran out great. I put 75 miles on it on day one, turned it off and on multiple times again with no issue. Toward the end of the ride I was playing with the trip/odo computer and saw where it was getting 16.7 mpg!!! I also noticed it went from 3/4 of a tank to E rather quickly. I thought that had to be incorrect but then I noticed while at a redlight I was smelling a strong odor of fuel. No leaks noted but it was smoking out the exhaust...smelled like a carburated engine running VERY rich. I got it home without issue. Took it to Kawi dealer and was told that numerous wires had been cut and retaped, appeared to have a PC put on and then removed, and very likely had the secondary flies removed/disconnected, and it would no longer start after Kawi was done with it. At $65/hr I just wanted to see what they could find wrong and I would attempt to fix. Kawi said computer showed no codes currently but did show several failure codes. I was told it they didnt really want to dig into this bike and fix it.

I then trailer it to a local shop that works on all bikes...Mechanic there tells me he is going to check each and every sensor first and go from there. No issues according to him with sensors but he did find a leaky vacuum line which he replaced. Plugs were replaced and bike will run but still way rich. Mechanic then checks fuel pressure which is at 53-54psi, he states it shouldnt be over 42-43psi. He wants to replace the fule pressure regulator which is part of the fuel pump. Air filter isnt dirty at all.. At this point I dont know if that the real issue...the more I read on here and elsewhere makes me think Im throwing money away and not getting anywhere. Im in Lexington,KY and it appears the zx 14 is a rare breed here....and people that know them are made of unobtainium.

Any advice is greatly appreciated...for some reason( as good as it was running) it appears to me to be a simple fix( sensor gone bad telling computer to send to much fuel to injectors) but I know nothing about these bikes. Oh yeah..mechanic also said injectors were good, not stuck, and it was getting fire to all cylinders.

HELP!!!!

First off, sitting all that time is the worst thing that can happen to a motor. Chances are it had some fuel in the tank which should have been drained rather than firing up the engine like that. Once the old fuel circulated, it probably has a few things clogged and not operating at peak efficiency. You would have been better of asking what to do with a bike that sat for two years than firing it up and THEN asking after things went south. I would start by removing the tank, taking out the fuel pump and cleaning both and the throttle bodies also. Then, I would put in some fresh spark plugs and start checking any and all rubber parts for leaks, cracks and deterioration. Go through the wiring harness using a factory manual wiring diagram and repair all the wires that have been butchered. Run a compression/leakdown test on all cylinders to discover whether any of the piston rings have become stuck from the 2 years of downtime. Once you have eliminated all those possible problems, you will have a better idea why it doesn't run right if it's still running rough.

From what you just posted above follow his lead. If you told him all you told us he will have you going in short fashion Good call taking bike away from first shop. Cheers & Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you found a deal, 9000k = sweet.

44psi should be the pump's output. So if it's 10 pounds more, smells rich, empties the tank quick, it might be that fuel pump. Change plugs too. If no parts, then replace the pump as a unit not some rebuild.
