Acceleration numbers?
04/30/13 12:46 PM

I see the threads that talk about lean angles, and I know that a bunch of folk on this site just enjoy the hell out of the acceleration these cycle can do.

That's why I bought it, after all. I really enjoy curling my eyeballs back into place after WOT on the 14R.

Anyway, I was wondering: Does anyone know if we're getting into "gravity acceleration" zone yet, with these cycles?

Gravity = 9.8 m/sec, per sec. Vertically. Call it 10 m/sec, every second.

We getting close to that, anyone know?

I'm asking about the horizontal bop, of course :)

Well, a couple of things to keep in mind, Acceleration is actually m/s^2 (meters per second per second, aka meters per second squared), so the accleration of "gravity" in the first couple of seconds is pretty lack luster, in 2.6s its about 57mph, where in 2.6s the ZX14 can hit 60Mph so if we stop looking RIGHT THERE, the ZX14 has slightly faster acceleration than gravity.

For the sake of arguing however...

It'd actually be hard to do a apples to apples comparison as the figures for the acceleration of gravity don't take into consideration air resistance, which 0-60 (or 0-100) times HAVE to factor in since engines need air to work :)

At a 0-100Mph comparison the ZX 14 can do that in 4.8s where gravity will hit 105mph in the same time which is still REALLY close, I can't find how much time it would take to go from 0-200Mph, but I'm pretty sure gravity would win out as the amount of power required to push through air resistance at higher speeds is exponential and you quickly start hitting the point of diminishing return so the motorcycle would require a LOT of horse power to go from 150-200Mph. If you could take air resistance out of the equation, the original 0-60 numbers definitely show that the zx14 can out performe gravity on a vertical drag strip!

0-65 in under 3 seconds. That's better than 2x gravity if my math is correct.

Sorry, Rook, I think Nightmare's answer is the correct one.

Wiki: Gravity acceleration: 21.937 mph/s, each second.

1st second: ~22 MPH
2nd second: ~44 MPH
3rd second: ~66 MPH

It's not 2X gravity, it's about the same as... But, there's the parasitic resistances: air, ground surface, etc., that keep us from continually accelerating on the cycle.

If it was not for those resistances, we would just keep accelerating, faster 'n faster until we left the ground (or hit it).

Still, those first 8 seconds or so on the cycle...

Kinda like jumping from an aircraft in a flying squirrel suit, and keeping the wings closed, and pointed down: straight down...

Nice!

oh, ok....well, I flunked math, so....

I thought the way it was written before was a typo.

Gravity accellerates 22mph/second. ...and it does so every second until maximum velocity is reached (isn't that about 180 mph for gravity ----like an object such as a skydiver or a piano goes max 180mph and that's top speed for the free fall?)

Rook, you're talking about terminal velocity where the air resistance experienced by an object becomes so great that it matches the accleration rate of gravity. According to wikipedia, a "skydiver in a in a belly-to-earth (i.e. face down) free-fall position is about 195 km/h (122 mph or 54 m/s)." where "if the skydiver pulls in his or her limbs (see also freeflying). In this case, the terminal velocity increases to about 320 km/h (200 mph or 90 m/s)"

can you get your bike up to 175 MPH in 8 second?????? It may be easy to "beat gravity" in the early numbers but it's a BITCH to keep up with!

ooooo wait--8 seconds is good quarter mile time. 155-- 165mph. Gravity got us.

A race machine hopped up on boost can do a lot better.

if the skydiver pulls in his or her limbs (see also freeflying). In this case, the terminal velocity increases to about 320 km/h (200 mph or 90 m/s)"

Terminal velocity got the average 14 beat up top. Accelleration on the bike nosedives after 175. It'll take us 13 seconds to reach 186mph and most of us won't do more than 190 without a strong tail wind. There is the Schnitz NOS busa that did 203 in just under 7 seconds. He had gravity for lunch from the starting line.

All this is kinda interesting but I'm more concerned with the projected rate of speed at which my wifes tits are falling... currently at a rate of .923" per 365days. haha. On a serious note, you people are way to smart, good job.
