Man thats sad heard about that on the news morning.

Terrible, and people in Alberta are fighting the distracted driver laws that are suposed to come into effect.... this includes everything from drinking coffee shuffling papers (like this dump truck driver was doing), and TALKING ON CELL PHONE< OR TEXTING!!!! All of us see this shit daily either when we are riding or driving to work in our cars and trucks.... Driving is a privilege and you can easily kill someone if you break the law or make poor choices, its not that hard with the large vehicles out there.... peop[le just don't use their heads and lack common sense... this is sick and now they say up; to five dead from this crash.... I bet some of them had children that they will leave behind.... I couldn't imagine it.....

One more reason to limit my exposure to the street. Its become to damn crazy people texting,painting finger nails, reading,watching TV......etc

Something like this almost happened to me last summer. It was a traffic light on a highway. Light was red. I was in the left of the 2 lanes on our side of the road. No cars stopped in the left lane -- two in the right lane. Something told me to move over into the right lane and stop behind the two cars. Not something that I normally would have done. No sooner had I stopped that than a large truck came up from behind in the left lane and went through the red light at 65mph plus... -bg

I think he ought to be publicly stoned to death, personally. Not enough of this taking responsibility for your own actions stuff going on around here. Dipshit deserves to die for being a complete moron.

There's no escaping that danger in an urban environment. All you can try to do is plan an escape path as you position yourself in the lane at the stoplight and then keep an eye on your mirrors. At least you have a lot better odds of powering away than you would in a car.

very very sad. You can try and think defensively ..but what are you going to do when you are stopped at a light with traffic comingup on you? You're a sitting duck.

I'm to the right/to the left of a rear fender, sitting like a duck, waiting in the back of a car at a traffic light. My head is cocked to the amber change and no one at this time is in back of me. Here comes someone. Now, I am watching the mirror [amber-mirror-amber] till this idiot stops [behind me] or I dart to the, 'exit strategy.' Like a pointed dog, I am ready to rail wax some red [tail light] plastic is more like haul ass the hell out of there; having enough time I've been watching all this go down [if they are going to stop or not]?

All we can do is try to develop an exit strategy and be hyper-aware when we are in vulnerable situations like this.... and pray! That last part is most important, I say a silent prayer before EVERY ride, I don't care if it's down to the corner store and another of thanksgiving upon my safe return. If I didn't believe God was watching over me I'd park my bikes for good.

Speaking of prayer, I'd like everyone to stop for a moment and say a prayer for the victims of this tragedy and their families. I couldn't stop thinking about it all weekend.

I know how your feeling right now Loadedmind, my first reaction was anger also but then I remembered these words "those among you who are without sin, cast the first stone". Any one of us could do something like that if the circumstances were right, I know I've made plenty of mistakes in my life while driving. From what I hear, the guy is a complete wreck and filled with remorse....his life is changed forever. He needs our prayers too even if it's hard for us.

I'm completely with you on that sentiment Hub, I'm not a herd rider either. At the end of the day, we all ride our own bike and that's dangerous enough without worrying about what someone ahead or behind me is doing.

Anybody in the Phoenix area that can do a follow up on this? The media loves to report the carnage but we never hear about the aftermath, I heard a rumour this mornng that two more of the riders had passed. Loaded, foregiveness is one of the toughest things we can do but without it we can't be forgiven. Just a thought bro.

You wonder what kind of accident this would have been if it had been cars instead of a group of bikes. What I mean is that a small wreck between two cars is a whole other world when you replace a car with a motorcycle. To make things worse in this incident, it was a damn dump truck and a group of bikes. That's about the worst combo I can think of. Wow.

The one time I wrecked as because someone was paying attention and pulled out in front of me. I was able to avoid the car but high sided. While I was laying in the rode I looked up and watched them leave the scene by speeding off and running a red light with no thought of helping me. There wasn't any other traffic around so they got away with it.

this guy only got 6 years jail time......... and he is appealing the sentence, says its harsh.... good behavior he will be out in 3 years.... after killing 5 innocent people..... yet again the Canadian Justice system fails the victims....

Horrible tragedy! One thing I can bet is that these are all Harley riders, grouped together, likely no 'awareness' of what's going on around them, no exit strategy, idling in neutral, chatting it up vs. being in gear, a few feet behind the car in front of you, finger on the brake, eyes on the mirrors glancing for the green light. Riding skills go way beyond just throttle, brake, etc. Sad.
