Clutchless Changes
05/30/12 2:57 AM

Hi to all,
On occasion i change gears without engaging the clutch. Only do it when i am going up thru the box. From second up.
I don't do it when i am accelarating very hard.
People i have spoken to have mixed oppinions about doing this. I dont see a problem as it is a very smooth and quick way of changing gears.
What do you think????????

I have do this quite often. I am trying to figure out how to explain the "when" of doing it, and drawing a blank. I would say engine rpm up a bit, load shift lever, off throttle, and change gear. If done correctly gear change will be easy. If you are forcing it, then stop doing it. I have not had any ill effects doing this on any modern sportbike I have owned. As an aside, the '4 will also down shift without the clutch at the rpm/load. Not really sure why I tried this, but it did work. Of course tranny has not been apart so I cannot say without a doubt there has not been any damage.

Hi zxinit,

I am pretty good at it. Smooth change-overs.

If you could put a return spring in the kill switch so it would only cut the ignition when held down, you could use it to unload the trans and upshift at any rpm. Downshifts are another matter since rpm must be matched (throttle blip) to make a smooth change. Very risky without perfect technique.

I do clutchless upshifts and downshifts, when done properly they won't hurt a thing.

If it feels smooth i wouldn't hesitate. I have a quikshifter and that makes it a piece of cake with moderate throttle. Large throttle, you better shift like you mean it.

Disengaging the clutch seems to allow for a softer shift no matter how you want to go about it. To me, seems like a half nudge will pop it into the next gear with clutch.. Clutchless requires a bit more effort even if the conditions are perfect and that to me means a little more ware on some parts.....not the clutch though.

I use my clutch all the time because I figure it is cheaper and faster to replace a clutch than to replace/fix a transition!

I use the clutch to start and stop and thats about it.The bike works like an automatic once you get the hang of it.

To much to list!

Clutchless upshifts will hurt nothing. That's the ONLY way I did it when I was racing. In fact, it may even make the clutch last longer since you aren't disengaging/engaging it as much. So, I say, go for it!
