Engine/Exhaust Performance Questions
07/31/14 10:12 PM

I have not been keeping up on the latest info regarding the 14R. I don’t get on this site or any other sites much anymore. Sorry, but I am a bit out of the loop on the latest parts out there.

I had a 2009 ZX14. I bought a 14R. Some of you might remember me.

I have read a few places that the 14R does not need or require the butterfly removal as the 2009 ZX14 did. Correct? No timing retard eliminator as well? What about the PAIR block off plates and the plug in the airbox (or marble/block of wood/etc)? Any benefit to doing that to the 14R? No decel pop eliminator as well for the 14R?

I have my Brocks CT single full titanium pipe from my 2009. I am going to put that on the new 14R. I guess I will sell the Brocks PowerCommander V from my 2009 and get a new Brocks PCV for the 14R or possibly one of the ECU flashes that are available. I also have a set of OPP Racing block off plates to sell from my 2009 ZX14. Anyone run a flashed ECU with a PCV, and if so, why? Tune-ability?

Any other relatively small engine mods that I need to consider on the 14R, as I want to do everything at once and get it all done. And finally, who makes a good top speed limiter eliminator, or are they all included with the re-flash? I want to disable the 186 MPH speed limiter, as I would like to do Bonneville Salt Flats within the next several years. I don’t want to incrementally change things.

In another year or so, I plan to put on a set of carbon fiber BST's and ceramic bearings. Thanks for the help.

Pull up a chair.

14R does not need or require the butterfly removal
I just pulled up a chair. That's debatable.

No timing retard eliminator as well?
Debatable.

Any benefit to doing that to the 14R?
Racing? Block it off.

.. full titanium pipe from my 2009.
May not fit clearing the front case being lower is it? Wait to find out.

I am going to put that on the new 14R.
Spigots may be too modded from the factory too? My '08 stock header would not line up on my R's attempt.

I guess I will sell the Brocks PowerCommander V from my 2009 and get a new Brocks PCV for the 14R

Yep. Main connector, skid, ABS all changed and so did the plug connectors. Sell it.

or possibly one of the ECU flashes that are available.
That's a turning avenue, yes.

I also have a set of OPP Racing block off plates to sell from my 2009 ZX14.

That might retro plate for plate, I'm not sure. Wait for that one. Racing? You need blockers.

Anyone run a flashed ECU with a PCV, and if so, why? Tune-ability?
Like saying is the plain old ECU good enough or can I get more tune out of the ECU? Yes. So it's like saying, I flashed my ECU and it just jumbled the same numbers and the torque is now here, will a pc still get more out of it? Well, did the stock one have an effect? Yes. So why not a flash too? Why not. Race against a pc'd flash and you are a flash alone? Better hope there is a stock class and stay there or play with the pigs? You need to be in the same pen with the mud out the wallet if you want to bonnie a binary LOL

Any other relatively small engine mods that I need to consider on the 14R

Pull the screen off the back of the OE's air cleaner element. Smoothing the ride out. No turning back so try it. Engine wise, wait for the larger wallets to chime in.

I want to do everything at once and get it all done.

Here comes the laundry list. I pulled the chair up closer.

And finally, who makes a good top speed limiter eliminator, or are they all included with the re-flash?
That's the same speedpro or whoever these days, or wait for the chime in on the flash eliminating this on the bonnie runs.

I don’t want to incrementally change things.

Race wise, this is a sitter until the event. If you are going to ride this and wear it out before that in so many years, the new stock one coming out will blow yours away; get real is pour money into an obsolete is buy fresh, roll all this up in that new bike. The wallets show up or if this is just to ride, I don't race to ride, do you? JMTOutLoud.

In another year or so, I plan to put on a set of carbon fiber BST's and ceramic bearings.

And in a couple of years this will not be the bike of choice for bonnie. Just throwing the odds out there, times you thinking the factories are sitting on their hands for a few years no way. JMO

Put a 4 into 1 exhaust on and have your ECU reflashed by Cblast. The power the bike has after these 2 things is unbelievable.

Thanks for the info, Hub.

Just to clarify a bit, I don't have deep pockets and I don't intend to set the world on fire and win anything at Bonneville. I want to check the "bucket list" box called Bonneville. I simply want to take my old Brocks CT Single pipe that I had on my 2009 ZX14 and put it on the new 2013 ZX14R. From there, I want to perform a few basic mods such as electronics, ECU flash, a top speed limiter delete (either a separate stand alone device or through a flash), possibly a PowerCommander V, maybe some PAIR block off plates, possibly an advancer, etc. That kind of stuff. I have no intentions on breaking open the engine and spending big bucks.

Hub, to answer some of your questions, I have 8 motorcycles, only 4 of which are street legal. The ZX14 is one of them and it is a 2013 that I bought new last October. It currently is completely stock with just under 500 miles on it. I ride other bikes on the street, mostly, as I need my driver’s license in order to work for a living. My 14R sees the street on very limited occasions. Brocks Performance did tell me in October 2013 that the CT Single designed for the 2009 is identical to the one they currently sell for the 2013 and it will fit.

From there, I want to put on a set of BST carbon fiber wheels, ceramic bearings, and possibly some other light weight savings measures, to include lightweight race bodywork.

Once that is done, I am hoping to break 200 MPH on the 14R. I figure that with a few more small changes, such as final gearing, etc, I should be able to do 201 MPH or better with the mods I have outlined. I know I need to talk to some people at places like Brocks and Schnitz Racing, etc, and then make the final decisions for my bike.
Finally, I am not getting down into the weeds on which pipe is better, which ECU flash is better, etc. I have no interest in debating that online. I am simply trying to determine what the serious go-fast people are doing differently from the older generation ZX14.

Let me say that again. I have no interest in debating that online. I am simply trying to determine what the serious go-fast people are doing differently from the older generation ZX14.

I am aware of the East Coast Timing Association (ECTA) in Ohio, the Texas Mile, etc. I just would like to do Bonneville and go at least 201 MPH on this bike with a few mods. I may also do Ohio and Texas, and probably will do Ohio as a test run leading up to Bonneville.

Thanks for any honest, sincere input from the serious go-fast racing crowd. I am a WERA and CCS racer, but have virtually no drag racing experience, save for two nights of local drag racing at local tracks years ago. I know there is a wealth of information out there, and I am just trying to tap into that a bit.

ECU flash will eliminate the top speed limiter and address timing changes. Pull the screen off the back of the stock air filter like Hub said. Don't waste your money buying an aftermarket filter. The pair valve block off is for dyno tuning purposes only. There is ZERO additional power to be made from this mod. Decel pop.... Who cares. Pull your secondary flies and throw them in the trash. 17,40 sprocket combo should get you to your 201 mph goal. Your rev limiter will be extended with a flash. Here comes the big question.

How much do you weigh?

My advice to you would be to get in touch with Shane661, lots of knowledge with LSR and the ZX-14R. Two years ago his wife Racheal was the first person in the world to break the 200mph on a ZX-14R at the Ohio Mile.

Your Gen 1 CT pipe will bolt right on your Gen 2 ... Brock did not change the CT for the new ZX14R .. Flashes and tunes are up to you to pick one that fit your needs .. Shanes record setting bike used Guhl flash and Brocks base map with a little fine tuning on the dyno ..Mine uses the Brocks/Guhls flash with Brocks mapping ( untouched )

2012 ZX14R Best ET 8.43 , Best MPH 164.95 ..Stock motor on pump gas ..Updated 8.42@163.95

I want to check the "bucket list" box called Bonneville.

A no record bike but a bucket list bike. Got it. Here is what I would do and this may take you in a different direction than say another way to go. We'll try to bleed this out and watch the progress, because you better get started now and have a 200+ bike right off the trailer.

It currently is completely stock with just under 500 miles on it.

OEM Tires = Park them. These are the BT's you shoe on. Why? Lighter than buying a replacement tire. Or? Take a chance you order $600 worth of OEM tires on line and they weigh the same.

Hardware: Gotta suck up to ti bolts or a few hacksaw blades and shave off some weight at the hangers.

Honk&Wink-Wink: First check the rule book or show up like the way you like the setup is 'your way' and now put me in a class. Again, this is 8 bikes and 3 are going to be ridden, this is weight here and who needs a horn, tool box, and I mean one end to the other is to take it off take off, every last nonessential.

Think about: What I've already mentioned. Think about what Mav suggested. Think about this. Since you've been away I've been keeping up on trivial things to others, important tuning thoughts to think about you might like to know. Brock showed a 2hp loss at the top end you chop the subs out of the OE loop. Mav says to pull the subs. Mav may be thinking 3/4 of a mile short of a check off? Tuning wise, I am after top end so I'd keep the subs in for 2 more hp. Your call.

Kofla suggests: you get in touch with Shane. I suggest you get in touch with Rachael. Where is the chassis setup in all this? So while you are asking if you have some pre-runs to show someone you can handle the bike, if not your background, then it's still how stiff is setup for said track? You apply the same bumps she describes and a bump is a bump is setup/tire pressure/etc.

From there, I want to put on a set of BST carbon fiber wheels, ceramic bearings, and possibly some other light weight savings measures, to include lightweight race bodywork.

I'd run the OE drive chain and say that is broken in some @ 500 mi. vs. a new chain, no o-rings in it, and both now have the same friction? Ti swing adjuster bolts/nuts. Ti front axle pinch bolts. No rear brakes/pedals/disc/etc. If you can't stop this bike with the front brakes from 200... Excuse me? That's 4lbs. alone. Subtract the disc and bolts, you took off more weight.

I don't have deep pockets and I don't intend to set the world on fire

That's why the OE plastic stays on. I would not waste my money for most of the crap out there. This is already wind tunnel tested. Throw the coin at the hardware.

Finally, I am not getting down into the weeds on which pipe is better, which ECU flash is better, etc.

I'd run Rachael's setup. Why? Too many combos to shakedown so you go with something proven and next year you play if need be.

Thanks for the info everyone. And thanks for not arguing over which pipe/ECU flash/etc is the best. I appreciate everything! Any more info, keep it coming.

Kofla suggests: you get in touch with Shane. I suggest you get in touch with Rachael.

I handle all of the bike setup, including parts selection, gearing, data logging, track tuning, setting shift points, etc...I spent a lot of time getting the setup on my bike dialed in. It was one of the very first bikes with a flashed ECU (Guhl), and one of the first on Brock's dyno.

Not to take anything away from her riding, but it is a team effort. And that bike is not running those numbers without me handling the details...as she would agree. I have personally ridden the bike to 206.8 mph, at 255 lbs suited.

I don't come around here much. If anyone has specific questions, they can contact me at shane at warp12racing dot com.

Shane
