New rider
10/14/14 12:31 PM

Hello All, I bought my 2014 ZX14R ABS this past Aug, I am just coming up on my first service. This is my first bike and I've heard every "that bike will kill you" comment out there. However, I'm 33 years old, 6-4 and it's such a comfortable ride...I couldn't have made a better choice. Anyway, I'm looking to change out the big exhaust cans. I've decided on some M4 slip ons for the look and sound (as well as price) and a PC-V with autotune. Please let me know if anyone has input on any modifications I should make.

Ok, I'm probably going to start a war, but here goes, I don't think you need a PCV IF you have a proper
Reflash of the ECU for normal street riding, there are many on this board with much more tech knowledge
than me, BUT think of this, the PC has to basically work with the ECU anyways, so why can't we use the
ECU and many sensors that are onboard ? these modern ECUs can and do many things, I mean do you really
want MORE wires between all your injectors ?

This is some of the things modern ECU's control, This is not specific to the 14R, it's just for reference :

Rev. limit: Defines the maximum RPM that the engine is allowed to reach. After this fuel and/or ignition is cut. Some vehicles have a "soft" cut-off before the "hard" cut-off.

Transient fueling: Tells the ECU to add a specific amount of fuel when throttle is applied. The is referred to as "acceleration enrichment".

Low fuel pressure modifier: Tells the ECU to increase the injector fire time to compensate for an increase or loss of fuel pressure.
Control of Air/Fuel ratio

Other parameters that are often mappable are:

Ignition Timing:
Low fuel pressure modifier: Tells the ECU to increase the injector fire time to compensate for an increase or loss of fuel pressure.

Closed loop lambda: Lets the ECU monitor a permanently installed lambda probe and modify the fueling to achieve the targeted air/fuel ratio desired.

Wastegate control: Controls the behavior of a turbocharger's wastegate, controlling boost.

Variable cam timing: Allows for control variable intake and exhaust cams (VVT),
Gear control: Tells the ECU to cut ignition during (sequential gearbox) upshifts or blip the throttle during downshifts.

A race ECU is often equipped with a data logger recording all sensors for later analysis using special software in a PC. This can be useful to track down engine stalls, misfires or other undesired behaviors during a race by downloading the log data and looking for anomalies after the event. The data logger usually has a capacity between 0.5 and 16 megabytes.

I'd go with used M4s if you can find them or just get a Brocks CT full system. YOu will want a full system so why spend big on slipons. If you have slipons, I doubt you will benefit much from a PC. Get a flash if you want. That will change the bike. As far as the need for a PC with a flash, it seems a wise choice if you are going to change exhausts at some point or if you want to self tune with AutoTune. If you know the bike is modded the way you will always want it and you don't like to mess around, get a flash with AFR tune for your setup and fprget the PC.

Closed loop lambda: Lets the ECU monitor a permanently installed lambda probe and modify the fueling to achieve the targeted air/fuel ratio desired.

That sounds cool.

Gear control: Tells the ECU to cut ignition during (sequential gearbox) upshifts or blip the throttle during downshifts.

Now that sounds REALLY cool!

AFAIC the jury is stillout on the Pazzo levers. My PAzzo clutch lever wore very badly and the bushing stuck. It caused my clutch to start slipping. I still need to work that out to determine if it was the lever or negligent maintenance on my part. Could be those Pazzos need to be removed and lubed frequently. A lot of people like them but I had trouble after 15000 miles.

Wow. Thank you all for the info. If I don't need a PC I definitely don't want to add that on. I'm going back to the drawing board on my research, but the consensus is that if I go with slip ons for now, then I don't need a PC? Why the levers though?

If you like the long sweeping stock set levers keep em. I'm running a long clutch shortie brake. Always like that set up. Feel, performance and looks. Completes the bike.

"My PAzzo clutch lever wore very badly and the bushing stuck. It caused my clutch to start slipping."...same here Rook...it wasn't faulty maintenance my friend. Some guys...Wolf for one...has had excellent results.Just a roll of the dice sometimes...Pazzos ARE good levers.

The question is, is it the lever or the perch? ...or is it that pushpin is longer on some bikes (or the bushing has deeper hole on some Pazos)? My oem lever worked just fine after i put it back on. I'll get to the bottom of this by next season.
