Safe to run a bike on a rear stand?
07/11/16 8:07 PM

OK I already know it's NOT particularly safe but I need to calibrate the speed input in my PCV so I can data log.
Best method is to run the bike on a dyno or rear stand and hold the speedo at the chosen target speed.

How fast would you run your bike on a rear stand? Any other safety suggestions?

I get nervous in 1st at idle, I have no doubt there is enough torque depending on how hard you gas it to rotate the rear wheel off the stand. If you can strap it down real good with real straps then maybe, but the downside of something happening is not a pretty story and probably dangerous too.

oh FoK, never even occurred to me the forward force caused by torque!! Well I have a forward handle rear stand which should prevent a tip up but that's still too scary. I ran the bike up to 30 mph in first nice and easy this afternoon. Not really an adequate speed to calibrate precisely. Would be best to run the bike at about 90-100 mph. I'm not doing that in the garage. i think it will be less dangerous to do this riding the bike down the road with the laptop velcroed to the tank.

Thanks, rudy. Glad i asked.

I have run my 14 on a rear stand with no problems. If your nervous just ziptie the front brake if the wheel is on the ground. Forward force of torque is not and issue since there is no traction to the tire it kinda gets dispersed in a circle, same shape of the tire.

I have done it on both front and rear. Seems a bit more stable with front end up also. I don't know if I would do it with a front that supports bike from bottom of forks. I use a pin style myself.

I've done it a many times, but usually at idle or a little above.

Thanks. I guess if you need to do it...but if it can be done with the bike on the road, that's how I'm doing it. gradual increase of power must be safer than a sudden blast. Yeah the momentum is thrown out in all directions keeping the wheel stable however there may be more at play there than torque. a gyroscope rotates horizontally, not virtical like a wheel. IDK.

How much is the speedo off with the new tire?

Tested with GPS. It was dead on the money up to 90 mph with a -11% Speedohealer correction. Pretty sure it must be pretty accurate above 90 as well. I have 17/45 gearing with a 200/55 tire. -11% was what HealTech recommended in their calibration estimate table for 17/45 gearing and a 190/55 tire. My 200/55 has a little wear on it.
