Pro-Bolt fasteners and accessories and
04/05/13 8:06 PM

I come across a coment about these lil devils every now and then. Started to develpo a little habit of buying the stuff myself. Gotta be the most expensive weight reductionmod I ever did, LOL....so far about a grand for reducing the bike's weight by a few ounces lol!!!

I guess they are really just to look cool and if you ride in an advanced level on a track that requires safety wires, you can do that a lot easier with aluminum bolts than steel.

but mostly, they just look cool and that is why I love this stuff. I'll post pics here as I get the stuff on the bike.

I have replaced all fairing screws. The anodized colors are beautiful. The blue is a deep, saturated blue very much like my pazzo levers or Carrazzeria rims. Some of the anodized blue parts I have purchased do not look as juicy as the Pro-Bolt anodizing. The gold is a brassy yellow, orange gold that you simply cannot appreciate fully until you compare it to the comparatively lifeless metallic gold paints that are available. The best gold paint pigment I know of is far less rich looking that anodized gold. I have not seen Pro-Bolt's other colors but if they are at all like the blue and gold, they are spectacular!

I have replaced all fairing screws. I'll weight he OEMs against the Pro-Bolts to see what kind of weight savings that amounts to. Can't wait to show pics of the aluminum bolts and Dzus fasteners I have replaced the OEM fasteners with.

Here is the weight of the bolts in the Pro-Bolt ZX-14 engine bolt kit. I don't have all of the OEM screws switched out yet so I am not able to weigh them. I'll post a pic whenI have all available for weighing.

It is not to hard to install the engine bolts. Simple as take one out at a time and replace it with the matching Pro-Bolt. Only problem I have had is that the OEM engine bolts have 13mm flanges that stick to the paint and when you remove the screw the paint comes with it. Pro-Bolt makes blue aluminum washers that arew 12mm in diameter so that would seem to almost solve the little problem. I think I will just order a small bottle of touch up paint instead. That is why I am not changing out all the engine bolts immediately. Might as well wait until I have paint to touch up the chips before i screw in the bolts. These sure are pretty, though.

Well, Grn, I was sorta waiting until the bike gets to a certain point....sorta some kinda unveiling or something...but at the rate that things get done on this bike, I guess I will just need to show pics one at a time. Just as well, I'm already planning my next order of Pro-Bolts. This bike will never be done!

These are expensivebut at least it looks like this is made of quality aluminum. I bent this Pro-Bolt P-clip back and forth a few times to get it to the shape I needed to hold a small wire. I even bent it at 90 degrees and then bent it back but it never broke. I can see the stress marks but looks like it will hold up to a few more bendings if I ever need to remove the clip from the wire.

The Pro-Bolt Engine kit saves a total of 6.75 oz. Weight loss is expensive I'll grant you but that's Not bad at all for $70.

I made an estimate on the tape weight as I did not want to remove the markings I have on the OEM screws.

The engine bolt kit is missing 1 alternator cover screw. I used a Pro-Bolt dome head of the proper length and pitch to complete the whole set. The dome head would weigh the same as a cap screw of the same length and shank diameter. There was an extra long cap screw included in the kit which was not needed. that could easily be sawn and beveled and used in place of the missing screw.

For another $20, I will replace the screws around the underside border of the motor with aluminum screws and I am sure that will amount to a total of over a half pound weight loss in engine screws.

I have the the fairing fasteners all changed as well but I will need to gather all the OEMs to find the weight of those.

Fairing fasteners are weighed. The weight is similar to OEM but that is because I am using the 12 Dzus fasteners that require the steel clip inside the fairing. Those clips amount to almost half the weight of the body panel fasteners. I have a modest weight loss of 1.6 oz.

These are all of the metal OEM fairing fasteners including the battery cover bolt. The tail and belly fasteners are not included and neither are the internal fasteners that secure the soft, flexible plastic inners. I've included 12 well nuts because they were removed to install the D-clips for my Dzus fasteners.

What do you guys think of this kit? I like the look of the domed bolts. Im just not comfortable using aluminum bolts. Maybe I'll be convinced here that aluminum bolts are ok but for now I'm leaning towards this kit.

cheaper than ProBolt. will not wear out. Gonna weigh twice as much and that means a few ounces.

Aluminum bolts should be safe for fairings because you don't need to tighten them up much. Just the ones on the very bottom of the lowers and all 4 front fender bolts need to be snug, the rest can be almost loose. Wellnuts will hold them in place.

If you are not seriously into weight loss get the Ebay ones or just get a can of semigloss black spray paint and do your OEMs. Or use a black Sharpie.

A sharpie! I get it Rook :) May as well get all I can out of an upgrade. Torque on my windscreen bolts was only 3lbs. i beleive. Is that the torque for the rest of the fairing bolts as well? Thanks! Happy 4th!

Rook, Was just out at Pro-Bolts sight. Closest kit I found was for a 2010 10R. Would this kit fit my 14 2011?

I don't think I go 3' lbs on my winscreen bolts. Just until I feel the rubber squeeze then maybe a quarter turn more. The tighter you go the more the rubber part colapses. It will eventually crush and split and then you need a new one. Actually a bit of a risk on that fastener at the back point of the tank cover. If that well nut splits, you might need to remove the tank to get in the airbox to retrieve the half if it falls in side. Also, that nut seals the airbox so not good to have it splitting. I tighten until I feel the rubber touch and then just a little more on all the fairing screws except the back two on the ram air covers and the 4 fender screws and the 4 lower fasteners on the underside. Those have solid metal brackets to screwinto. snug those ones up and check occasionally to see if they are loose. Never had a wellnut come loose EVER.

Can't answer that one for ya. I would check with the Pro-Bolt USA guy. It WILL take a week to get an answer (probably has to call the motherland) but he should know. I'm guessing most would be of use but you will not have enough to do your whole bike. A ZX-10 has fewer screws than a 14.

I bought screws as needed for my fairing setup. I did not order a kit because I use Dzus fastener 1/4 turns on my upper and side....the 6 small external screws on each side. A ZX-10 does not have those. I do not think PB makes fairing kit for the 14 but you should be able to buy them singles. Really does not cost a lot more than a kit I don't think. Make sure you check head diameter for all fasteners if you do not get a kit made for the 14.

I ordered the engine and fairing kits for my bike. I went through the Probolt USA site, but it appears they are still shipping from the UK. 10.00. Looking forward to putting these on with a couple pale ales...

Yes, that was the case whe I ordered. 2 weeks turnaround time. They are very nice quality bits though. Had some trouble with the Ti bolts coming loose on the rear rotor and I also busted on of in the front rotor. My fault, used wrong torque spec but still think that bolt shoulda took 30 lbs of torque without snapping. Use lokTite where you see them get loose and you'll be fine. NONE of the engine bolts came loose and I used the ProBolt supplied never seize on those. Go figure. The only bolt that came loose on the fairings was the one in the the cone shape under the foreman. Also the one at the back by the battery box. Both were trapped inside and fell out when I took fairings off one day. Don't worry about the wellnut fasteners. They will stay snug. Don't ever use LokTite on one of those or it might spin in the grommet when you try to remove it.

DAMN, I ordered that whole engine bolt kit and guess what? Now I want gold engine bolts. A can of VHT gold engine paint did the trick very nicely. I'm not spending $60 on a set of bolts all over again.

There a good company with good products. I'll oder more stuff from them in the future when I have the bread.

actually, PB gives you anti-locking agent, not LokTite. I used their stuff on all the engine bolts except for the couple that the SM recommends using thread locking agent. On those, just regular blue LokTite.
